Abstract: During excavations at Ostia in 1938, more than fifty fragments of different marble archi- tectural fittings were found in the Macellum (IV, V, 2). These were not part of the original decoration of the so-called Macellum, but had been used secondarily for surfacing a courtyard. Aside from the usual themes and motifs found in marble inlays, some of the panels are so-called soffit panels. These were used to clad horizontal straight architraves that were reinforced with ferrules. These appear to date to the early 2nd century AD. At present, this technically highly complex form of construction is only known from Imperial building projects in Tivoli and on the Palatine. The soffits, as well as one lesene, are also marked with scratched lines that indicate the schematics for decorations that were intended to be added later.
