Peace and conflict analysis

This article examines the causes of the Liberian Civil War of 1989-2003, and proposes policy alternatives that the current government can pursue to ensure durable peace and development. The paper argues that bad governance accounted for the conflict. Therefore, if peace, security and development are to be attained, there is a need for the current government to adopt and implement four policy options: good governance, security sector reform, a long-term development approach, and capacity building at the national and local levels. Although the new President of Liberia has taken some critical steps towards implementing some of these policies, more work needs to be done to address corruption, and promote transparency, accountability, good governance and development if a relapse into conflict is to be avoided.

This training module is the second of three modules to help sensitize public, non-profit and local organizations on understanding conflict sensitivity, learning how to do a “do no harm” analysis, and learning how to integrate conflict sensitivity into the project cycle or work processes.  The INTERMEDIATE module focuses solely on conflict sensitivity analysis through Mary Anderson’s, “Do No Harm” framework.

The purpose of this course on conflict sensitivity is to introduce the participants to the practical analysis of “Do No Harm” as it relates to development work in Kyrgyzstan.  This course will focus on what is “Do No Harm”, why one should try to “Do No Harm,”  how public, non-profit or international organizations can do harm, examples of application of “Do No Harm” principles, and an outline of the steps of process  Doing No Harm analysis.

Historical and political underpinnings of the Dagbon chieftaincy conflict make it tougher and complicated to understand. Consequently, the purpose of the paper is to furnish a complete component for working out the complexities within the conflict utilising SPITCEROW mannequin of conflict analysis. An analytical part will explain the conflict via Edward Azar’s Protracted Social conflict thought. Secondary data including journals, articles, books, radio and newspaper reports, internet publications, and news documents were use in the study. Hence, the paper revealed that the Primogeniture system of inheritance introduced into the ‘Ya Na-ship’ throne is the main cause of the conflict. In effect, the authors suggest that, for sustainable peace to be seen in Dagbon, traditional conflict resolution techniques from within the local people themselves, could be the best way to ensure sustainable peace in Dagbon.

Conflict analysis is a structured process of analysis to understand conflict. It focuses on the conflict profile (its history), the actors involved and their perspectives, the causes of conflict, and the dynamics of how these elements interact.

The study was conducted to examine the influence of Kuria traditional local governance institutions in the management of intra-ethnic conflicts in Tarime district located in north eastern Tanzania with the aim of creating understanding on how practices and decisions taken by informal local governance institutions affect the management of intra-ethnic conflicts. Systems Thinking Theory (STT) was used to guide analysis of governance issues in the existing intra-ethnic conflicts among Kuria. Ethnographic research design guided by qualitative research approach was deployed to collect information. The data collected were subjected to content analysis to form themes and sub-themes of the study. The study findings revealed that Kuria's informal local governance institutions have both negative and positive influences towards intra-ethnic conflicts in the sense that they had potentials to trigger conflicts and they can also play a significant role in the management of intra-ethnic conflicts. The study further indicated that Kuria communities [clans] in the Tarime district, share common informal governance institutions which form part of their culture and history and thus they are in the best position to apply informal approaches to manage conflicts in the area despite their limitations. However, despite such strengths of informal local governance institutions in the management of intra-ethnic conflicts, their potentials were not fully harnessed in the Tarime peacemaking process. The study recommends the establishment of initiatives targeting recognition and the inclusion of informal local governance institutions in the management of intra-ethnic conflicts among Kuria of Tarime. 4 conceptual and contextual issues, the third section will present methodology, the fourth section is about results, discussions, and the conclusion.

Using this framework, the paper begins with analysis and a discussion of historical dynamics, structures and international interventions, which will be followed by discussion of the root causes. Furthermore, this paper will give information about the different actors involved in the conflict. Finally, it will provide an overview of the current trends, impediments, and recommendations to address the conflict.
