Paul the Silentiary

The construction of Justinian's Hagia Sophia was one of the most important events for the inhabitants of Constantinople in the sixth century. The building process and the appearance of the church were described by three authors from the age of Justinian: Romanos the Melodist in the kontakion On Earthquakes and Fires, Paul the Silentiary in Ekphrasis, and Procopius of Caesarea in The Buildings. The article presents the analysis and the interpretation of these sources in the context of the political history and the contemporary events. The texts have been researched with the use of philological and historical methods in quest for conceptions of the process and the significance of the construction of the church inserted in them. On the grounds of them there is shown that the sources present the similar conception creating a sort of political theology and containing a spiritual interpretation of the building of the church. The construction of the church was regarded as the realization of God's plan for the inhabitants of Constantinople. It was the emperor who played the main role in this plan. The building of the church was the seal of the conversion of the Christians and of the return to the covenant with God. The beauty of Hagia Sophia induces people to the faith and helps them to get closer to God.

Budowa justyniańskiej Hagii Sophii była dla mieszkańców Konstantynopola w VI w. jednym z najważniejszych wydarzeń. Proces powstawania świątyni oraz jej wygląd opisało trzech twórców z czasów Justyniana: Roman Melodos w kontakionie O trzęsieniach ziemi i pożarach, Paweł Silencjariusz w Ekphrasis oraz Prokopiusz z Cezarei w O budowlach. Artykuł przed-stawia analizę i interpretację tych źródeł w kontekście historii politycznej i bieżących wydarzeń. Teksty zostały poddane badaniom filologicznym i historycznym pod kątem zawartych w nich wizji procesu i znaczenia budowy kościoła. Na ich podstawie zostaje wykazane, że źródła prezentują podobną koncepcję, tworzącą rodzaj teologii politycznej oraz zawiera-jącą duchową interpretację budynku kościoła. Budowę świątyni postrzegano jako realizację Bożego planu wobec ludności Konstantynopola, w którym główną rolę odgrywa cesarz Justynian. Budynek kościoła jest przypieczętowaniem nawrócenia chrześcijan i powrotu do przymierza z Bogiem. Piękno Hagii Sophii pobudza wiernych do wiary i pomaga im w zbliżeniu do Boga.

Наши исследования последних лет показали, что в византийском
искусстве сознательно создавались «пространственные иконы»,
возникавшие в Воздухе как некие образы-видения, своего рода
посредники при переходе зрителя-молящегося из земной реаль-
ности в небесную. Воздух становился важнейшим элементом в формировании сакральной среды и, вместе со сложной драматургией света, образовывал несущую основу византийской пространственной иконы. В настоящей работе внимание будет сосредоточено на образе Светящегося облака — эффект, сознательно создававшийся в куполе «Великой церкви» Софии Константинопольской и, как показывают последние исследования Иакова Потамианоса, и в куполах многих других византийских храмов. В контексте иеротопии речь идет о концептуально продуманной и детально проработанной пространственной иконе Софии Константинопольской, в которой физическая реальность соединялась в единое целое с воображаемым миром, присутствовавшим в сознании подготовленных зрителей.

The perception of Byzantine churches was defined by image-paradigms
which existed over and above figurative depictions. In this article I analyse the image paradigm of the ‘Holy Mountain’, which significantly shaped the perception of both the outer aspect and internal spaces of Byzantine churches. A key element of the holy mountain image-paradigm was the ambo, located in the space under the cupola. In early Byzantium, it was a significant iconic image which dominated the interior of the church. The article discusses multiple hierotopic and symbolic functions of Byzantine ambos as witnessed by contemporary sources. Particular attention is given to the ambo of the Hagia Sophia which was a complex spatial structure with its own  arrangement of inner sacred zones. In closing I describe the single preserved exemplar of Russian Medieval ambos, the Novgorod wooden ambo dated 1533. Although being far from Byzantine models both geographically and historically,  it epitomizes the same persistent image-paradigm of the Holy Mount.

In the present paper I focus on the occurrences of the motif of the lamp (λύχνος) in the fifth book of the Palatine Anthology. It turns out on numerous oc casions the lamp is not merely an element of night scenery but it also performs functions typical of people or gods. An analysis of twelve epigrams from Book V shall demonstrate the variety of contexts in which the lamp appears and give a few remarks about the language used in the poems in which this motif occurs.

Bien que généralement accepté comme une évidence, le lien qui unit la Description du Tableau cosmique (ἔκφρασις τοῦ κοσμικοῦ πίνακος) de Jean de Gaza et les deux Description de l’église de Sainte-Sophie (ἔκφρασις τοῦ ναοῦ τῆς ἁγίας σοφίας) et Description de l’ambon (ἔκφρασις τοῦ ἄμβωνος) de Paul le Silentiaire reste cependant à établir avec plus de précision qu’il n’a été fait jusque-là. Un demi-siècle environ sépare les deux auteurs, les Descriptions de Paul étant précisément datées des fêtes de Noël de l’année 562. Tous deux peuvent être qualifiés de « nonniens », au sens où leur poésie est marquée par l’influence du grand poète égyptien Nonnos de Panopolis. Loin de signifier un rapport univoque de chacun de ses émules vis-à-vis de leur inspirateur commun, cette filiation va de pair avec une relation d’interaction de ces poètes entre eux. C’est ainsi que les Descriptions de Paul le Silentiaire sont construites sur le modèle de celle de Jean de Gaza.
