La Tregua

Primo Levi's return to Auschwitz on June 1982 has become a "topical form" of Levi's profile as human being.! More than twenty years later a further documentary film, La strada di Levi, by Davide Ferrario and Marco Belpoliti, rethinks Primo Levi liberating him from the burden of his name and allowing to reconnect people and places filtered through the years. La strada di Levi is not an extemporaneous work or a deliberate foray into the world of documentary film, but the film adaptation of a season of our best "reducismo", in which the individual case, brutal and oppressive, embodies both the civic point of view and the perspective of social and historical changes. Despite some aesthetic and syntactic limitations, La strada di Levi is that moment during which the veteran can repeat the experience of pulling up his roots, of the tragic preeminence of the unreal over the real, thanks to a film that, although based on reconstructions and testimonials, maintains the fictitious halo, typical of similar products, even the most documented.

Atualmente, os Estados-Nação vivenciam um processo de refutação do monopólio interno da violência legítima, assim como de seu conceito tradicional de soberania. É cada vez mais comum a emergência de atores não estatais que assumam o controle de fato em uma parte dos territórios nacionais, obrigando os Estados a planejar diferentes tipos de estratégias para não perder sua legitimidade e presença nos espaços controlados. Nesse contexto, a presente dissertação teve como objetivo estudar o fenômeno conhecido popularmente como La Tregua em El Salvador. Esta foi uma experiência de negociação entre o Estado salvadorenho, através de uma equipe mediadora, e as principais três organizações criminosas para a diminuição do número de homicídios. As principais categorias que constituíram o referencial teórico do presente esforço foram as de ordem pública, organizações criminosas, sistema de justiça criminal, pandillas e políticas públicas. Para poder realizar a pesquisa, adotou-se a metodologia qualitativa baseada nas premissas epistemológicas do interacionismo simbólico. De igual forma, foi utilizada como principal ferramenta de interpretação a Análise Secundária de Dados Qualitativos. Nesse sentido, as principais fontes de dados foram as matérias de jornais investigativos, os trabalhos acadêmicos sobre o objeto de estudo e a informação oficial do governo de El Salvador. Como resultado, fez-se, em primeiro lugar, a reconstrução das principais ações públicas feitas contra as pandillas em El Salvador, estabelecendo como período temporal os anos 2003-2009. Em segundo lugar, identificaram-se os elementos que constituíram os antecedentes diretos para o aparecimento do fenômeno de estudo, estabelecendo como período temporal os anos 2009-2011. Finalmente, fez-se uma reconstrução do processo opaco de negociação entre o governo salvadorenho e as principais organizações criminosas no país, estabelecendo como período temporal os anos 2011 -2015.

RESUMEN: Este artículo analiza La tregua de Mario Benedetti. El estudio examina las diferentes fases o más bien los matices por los cuales pasó el personaje de Martín Santomé, protagonista de la obra, después de que un cambio inesperado trastornó su vida: la muerte de su amada Laura Avellaneda. El texto está dividido en cuatro partes. En la primera se alude al tema de la jubilación y a la obsesión de Martín Santomé con este momento. En la segunda, se estudia la importancia del personaje de Laura Avellaneda en la vida de Martín. En la tercera, se estudian los elementos que hacen que la relación entre ambos sea significativa. Finalmente, en la cuarta, se analiza la desolación que produce la muerte de la joven en la vida del protagonista. Palabras-clave: La tregua.


ABSTRACT: This article analyzes La tregua of Mario Benedetti. The study examines the different phases or rather the shades for which Martín Santomé, main character of the novel, happened after an unexpected change upset his life: the death of his beloved Laura Avellaneda. The text is divided in four parts. The first one alludes to the topic of the retirement and how Martín Santomé faces this moment with a certain degree of obsession. The second one is focused on the importance that the character of Laura Avellaneda has in Martín's life. The third one studies the elements that make their affective relationship something significant for both of them. Finally, the fourth one examines the motif of desolation that emerges as a result of Avellaneda's death.

In March 2012, the biggest and most powerful gangs in El Salvador, «maras» Salvatrucha and Dieciocho, called a truce and decided to «calm down» (calmarse). In order to reduce the high levels of violence that affect society as a whole, the heads of both maras committed themselves to stop the killings, kidnappings and blackmail that had been occurring in almost every corner of El Salvador for more than two decades. However, over the last few months there is some evidence that seems to indicate that the purposes of implementing the truce were not those that han been expressed by the maras, and were closely linked with drug trafficking in the country. In spite of the Organization of American States' (OAS) approval and its role of guarantor of the peacebulding process, the truce is in the maras' hands and not in those of the civil society, wich is still reluctant to trust these organizations. In this scenario, policymakers should change the status quo, particularly in view of the coming presidential elections.

Primo Levi pursues an anthropological analysis of work in several of his novels and essays, stressing its centrality for approaching a definition of humanity. In this note I will consider a range of Levi’s texts which feature representations of work, including La tregua (1963), La chiave a stella (1978) and the short story ‘Gli stregoni’, collected in Lilìt e altri racconti (1981). I will also consider Levi’s original anthropological conception of the human as a ‘maker of receptacles’ as expressed in his essay ‘Una bottiglia di sole’ (1985), showing how this idea is embodied by several characters of the texts analysed here.

The article aims at pointing out and analyzing the cosmogonical and mythical motifs in Primo Levi’s The Reawakening. It underlines how myths contribute to the narration and reveal the chemist-writer’s attempt to polymerize his cultures – creating a temporal concept ‘figure’, he fuses different mythologies and epitomizes the epochal shift between pre- and post- Auschwitz, between Poland and Belarus, through the mythological stories he knew which will appear also in his further works.
The intertextual dialogues are held with Bible, literature and science and are based on six motifs: the devastating «counter-creation» set up by Nazis, opposed to holy creation (either by God or Nature, through the combination of the elements); the cosmic and divine void left by the «black hole of Auschwitz», which swallows men or pulls them to regain their humanity, willing to live free; the Great Flood, which erases the scoria of Auschwitz and gives new life to people and to the nation; the Jewsih rùakh, both inside of men and on the surface of the Earth after the catastrophic nothingness; the mud, primeval substance already there in the Lager of If this is a man, out of which life came out and man was created; and finally, in the painful closing, the chaos, all-pervading ultimate tyrant. Each one of these concurs to create a significant and highly symbolic set for Levi’s picaresque adventures during his return to Turin, signing his first attempt to combine reality with literature, myth and fiction.

Questo lavoro si apre con una breve parte teorica dedicata ai tipi di discorso riportato, attribuendo un rilievo maggiore al discorso indiretto libero. La seconda parte del lavoro ha una sfumatura più pratica e si sintetizza nell’analisi del discorso riportato in due capitoli delle opere di Primo Levi: L’esame di chimica, decimo capitolo del libro Se questo é un uomo; una curizzetta decimo capitolo del romanzo La tregua.
L’idea che ha motivato questo tipo di lavoro é stata quella di capire se oltre alle chiare differenze esistenti tra i due libri si potesse cogliere ancora qualcosa di rilevante nell’analisi del discorso riportato. Se questo é un uomo come anche La tregua sono due libri di stampo memorialista, ma se nel primo prevale la necessità di testimoniare, di fornire al lettore un quadro di verità senza fronzoli e ricamature, nel secondo ci troviamo in una dimensione romanzesca piena di imprevisti, di avventura, di curiosità e di vita.
I due capitoli sono stati scelti perché potessero rappresentare le diverse tendenze dei due libri. L’esame di chimica é uno dei momenti più importanti all’interno dell’opera e che segna in modo assoluto il destino di Levi, la lingua in questo capitolo come nel resto del libro é precisa, marmorea, sostenuta. Una curizzetta rappresenta, invece, in modo tipico le avventure che ritroviamo nel viaggio di Levi fuori dal lager. Le incomprensioni linguistiche che generano ilarità , la voglia di rischiare tutto , di mettersi di nuovo in gioco, di ritornare a vivere. La lingua nella Tregua é molto ricca, frequenti sono i casi di discorso diretto dove si scopre la grandezza dell’autore nel saper giocare con le parole, nel riuscire a riportare, in modo talvolta anche molto ironico, i termini dialettali, le strutture sintattiche legate alla sfera del parlato, esclamazioni e interiezioni colloquiali aggiungendo senza dubbio anche un po’ di fantasia.
La difficoltà principale é stata riscontrata nell’analisi del capitolo L’esame di chimica. Quasi come a confermare l’ibridismo del libro, il discorso riportato e in particolar modo il discorso indiretto libero (d’ora in poi DIL) si colloca spesso in un livello di forte ambiguità. Il problema legato alla difficoltà di classificare il DIL é sicuramente generato dalla presenza del presente storico che ci riporta nel corso degli eventi. La sfasatura temporale pone infatti il difficile interrogativo nel comprendere se i pensieri o i discorsi riportati siano relativi alla narrazione, al contesto diegetico o al presente storico degli avvenimenti.

This work focuses on a truce established between criminal groups in El Salvador, commonly known as pandillas. Based on a specific conceptual framework and using a set of methods from the Actor-Network Theory, I intend to follow some controversies of this process regarding the fulfillment of the agreement, the stabilization of its beginning and closure, and the determination of its “success" or "failure”. In order to do so, we shall first see how the monthly homicide numbers produced by the country’s Institute of Legal Medicine act on these tensions, organizing and producing different versions of the truce. Next, we expect to shift our analyses towards actors that participate in the production of such numbers, influencing on the many narratives they create. Elements that usually remain unnoticed, or even forgotten, are the very focus of this work. Thus, this paper seeks to expand the literature on the truce period, while at the same time aiming to broaden discussions on the convergence between numbers, quantification, deaths and situations of violence.
