moreThis is an Egyptian-themed ritual for the Autumn Equinox that was originally written back in 2007. I was inspired to write this by a number of things going on at this time of year, particularly the confluence of Rosh HaShanah and the Sun entering Libra - The Scales of Judgement which is much older than monotheism. Here are some notes from a couple years ago:

Some imagery described in the Talmud may give some insight into what may be the original meaning of the Scales of Libra. There's a description in the Talmud which describes Joseph - having been deified - as being worshiped holding scales and a measuring rod for the grain.
This was too similar to the symbolism of Libra and the Tarot card Justice for me, especially as the Jewish holidays of Repentance & Judgement occur during the Jewish month associated with Libra.
Thus, for me, the image of Joseph as Justice is more that of the distribution &/or rationing of the Harvest each year, rather than an Apocalyptic Judgement of Souls. Nevertheless, the portion of the Egyptian Book of the Dead that takes place in the Hall of Maat may well be a prototype for the Abrahamic concept.
