Janus

This work here summarized exposes and documents in multiple cases how preformated Gods organized in two distinct and very precisely typed sets of triads were created at will in archaic Etrusco-Tiberine Italy by/for every social entity of any type and size, from individuals to the most organized State level. Such dual sets of religious figures were systematically devised and set-up in order to symbolically define and delimit how the said social entities integrated into the global social framework. The first triadic set, which we call ‘’ territory-control masculine triad’’, has for typical example* the so-called Roman archaïc triad, three male gods forming a group related to territory control by the said social entity where each one is gifted with differentiated properties associated to a partition of the territory in layers (or concentric circles, see schematic of topological correspondences) from the outer fringe to the most intimate inside, whether ‘’territory’’ is actually of geographical, economic, social, ethnic, or of any other nature. The second triadic set, which we call ‘’populus triadic set’’, has for typical example* the so-called Roman Capitoline triad, one male deity and two female deities, forming a group with collective properties related to the development of the population of the said social entity (the ‘’populus’’) where these deities each exercize specific roles linked in a symbolic logical chain mimicking human biological impregnation. Religious authorities governing the social institutions in Rome continuously adapted the cult framework to new situations created by internal social evolution or as need arose from critical circumstances. They case by case transposed territorial existence problematics and community development dynamics concerns of any level into customized collective metaphysics by creating as needed n-plicate avatars of a unique religious representation of mankind’s condition. This methodology was applied with systematic care to any type of social entity, from single individuals and straight nuclear families up to the entire community federated as the global political body. Hence the social, but as well political, military, civilian organization history, as well as family house-keeping traditions of Rome, can be seen and reinterpreted as threaded with such religious innovations, which can from now on be analysed as structured steps with precise purposes moved by social lobbies or ethnic communities within the Roman society. Clear hints in Etruria and Iguvium indicate that similar socio-religious logics were applied in an Italian scope that went way beyond the sole range of the Roman society, thus raising the question of where the system originates. These two triads are in addition associated to a time-presiding divinity, in charge of the saecula of the entity and supervising the relationship with the divine world, through augury, sortes, or any type of divination. While the triads occupy the city and the equivalent of the capitolium, in a more or less explicitly coupled way depending on the context, the time divinity is clearly separated and placed at the arx (or the closest functional equivalent).

This article is based on a conversation between the President of the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness and the Editor-in-Chief of its journal. The aim of this conversation is threefold: (1) to engage a broader audience within the field of the anthropology of consciousness, (2) to discuss the recent history of the organization and its current direction, and (3) to recognize why concrete efforts toward a practice of decolonization is essential to maintaining the relevance of an anthropology of consciousness.

Sosiaalipalvelujen tutkimus ja sosiaalityö T ämän artikkelin tarkoituksena on pohtia sosiaalipalvelujen tutkimuksen ja sosiaalityön suhdetta. Sosiaalipalvelut ovat nykyisin monen tieteenalan tutkimuskohteena. Yhteiskuntatieteilijöistä niin sosiologit kuin sosiaalipoliitikot ovat etenkin 1990-luvusta lähtien kiinnittäneet kasvavassa määrin huomiota sosiaali-ja muihin hyvinvointipalveluihin. Myös hallinto-ja taloustieteilijät ovat osallistuneet hyvinvointipalveluista käytävään keskusteluun. Sosiaalipolitiikassa sosiaalipalvelut ymmärretään nykyisin keskeiseksi osaksi hyvinvointivaltion toimenpiteitä ja siten tutkimuksen olennaiseksi kohteeksi. Sosiaalityössä suhtautuminen sosiaalipalveluihin on sen sijaan ollut ambivalentimpaa. Osa sosiaalityön tutkijoista on ollut kiinnostunut sosiaalipalveluista, mutta ammattina sosiaalityö on tehnyt eron itsensä ja sosiaalialan muiden ammattien välille. Laajimmissa sosiaalipalveluissa, kuten lasten päivähoidossa sekä vanhojen ja vammaisten ihmisten palveluissa, sosiaalityöntekijät ovat vain pieni ammattiryhmä, mikä on vähentänyt sosiaalityön tutkimuksen kiinnostusta kyseisiin palveluihin. Kysyn kuitenkin tässä tekstissä, kannattaako sosiaalityön jättää palvelujärjestelmien tutkimista vain muiden tieteenalojen huoleksi. Mitä sosiaalipalvelujen tutkimuksella on annettavanaan sosiaalityölle? Artikkeli lähtee liikkeelle sosiaalityön ja sosiaalipalvelujen käytäntöjen yhteenkietoutumisen pohdinnalla. Hungary once represented a schoolbook case of transition to democracy. Now it offers insights into both contemporary Europe and theories of populism and nationalism. Resisting the traditional linear perspective to transition and a 'demographic' view of democracy, this article explores the relationships among democracy, populism and nationalism. This article operationalises performative and post-foundational theory of populism as a logic of articulation to explain Fidesz and the party leader Viktor Orbán's illiberal measures, dichotomies between them and us, ultimately leading to nationalism and xenophobia. It shows how revolution, 'illiberalism' and migrants have served for populist meaning-making and are related to the political polarisation in Hungary. This article enhances the understanding of democracy by discussing the performative features of nation-building, populism and law-making in contemporary politics and finally the 'Janus-face' of populism. It sees 1989 as a populist moment of constitution of the foundations of a new era but also of the people central to democracy, and recognises attempts to generate similar moments in the 2010s.

Camillo's legendary Theatre of Memory remained only a fragment, its benefits only an option for the future. When it was finished, the user-so he predicted-would have access to the knowledge of the whole universe. On account of his promising invention, Camillo's contemporaries called him 'the divine'. This study focused on Liszt's life-long quest for a new, “regenerated” Church music and his relationship to Plainchant. It shows how Liszt managed to balance Traditionalism and Modernism in using gregorian melodies, a repertoire he considered to be the mother tongue of the Church that could help to renew its musical language : "The most daring excesses of the music of the future are no more than childish timidity when set beside the heroism of true plainchant, which is stuffed full of quarter-tones, tristropha and strophicus" (Liszt to Joseph d'Ortigues in 1862). Chant helped Liszt to make New with the Old. Based on detailed study of his manuscripts, sketchbooks and annotated books in Weimar and Budapest, it gives an insight into his compositional workshop and the genetic process of his gregorian-based works (the example are taken from his oratorios "Die Legende von der heiligen Elisabeth" and "Christus").

Two molecular Janus particles based on amphiphilic [60]fullerene (C60 ) derivatives were designed and synthesized by using the regioselective Bingel-Hirsh reaction and the click reaction. These particles contain carboxylic acid functional groups, a hydrophilic fullerene (AC60 ), and a hydrophobic C60 in different ratios and have distinct molecular architectures: 1:1 (AC60 -C60 ) and 1:2 (AC60 -2C60 ). These molecular Janus particles can self-assemble in solution to form aggregates with various types of micellar morphology. Whereas vesicular morphology was observed for both AC60 -C60 and AC60 -2C60 in tetrahydrofuran, in a mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)/water, spherical micelles and cylindrical micelles were observed for AC60 -C60 and AC60 -2C60 , respectively. A mechanism of formation was tentatively proposed based on the effects of molecular architecture and solvent polarity on self-assembly.

Introduction' In this article I will try to uncover what I will call, with some hesitation, the 'constructive' dimension in Nietzsche's philosophy• The assessment of his success in uncovering an alternative to nihilism goes beyond my task here, although it will be clear that I am sympathetic to his project • Laying out the logic of his construction will allow for its subsequent evaluation. The next question would be this: is this perspective productive for life? It is still too often thought that Nietzsche's critique of value systems prevalent in the latter part of the nineteenth century amounts to a wholly negative or destructive project. All too often he is still seen as complicit with a nihilism revelling in the 'death of God' and associated absolute values. Alternatively, and more plausibly, he is seen as diagnosing the modem condition as one of a crisis in value and in this sense his task is that of description rather than of the prescription of nihilism. This diagnosis is, indeed, one of the most powerful of Nietzsche's contributions to modem thought. However, what has often been missed or understated, is that Nietzsche holds that resting with nihilism is not the only option open to us•. He scorns those who adopt the nihilistic position, while he simultaneously denies that a return to absolute values is available. While no positive plan for the future of 'man' is assured, various possibilities are open to us, some of which should be grasped. Nietzsche's point is that possibilities are essential for the 'as yet undetermined animal' and this is exactly what both absolutism and nihilism deny'. I will particularly trade on Nietzsche's introduction of 'Janus Perceptions' in Human All Too Human and examine how these Weltanschauungen, or paradigms, which are dangerously undecided as to their effects on life, contribute to a project of constructing value • Strictly, he only mentions 'Janus Perceptions' on a few occasions, but I suggest that the phrase captures one of his central interests, namely, the unstable combination of the negative and the potentially constructive. In the main my textual references will be to the middle period and to the Gay Science in particular'. While there is, I believe, plenty of evidence that the theme of 'Janus Perceptions' captures a concern crucial throughout Nietzsche's writings, I will simply seek to establish their main features in this article • In the later works they become

This article aims to show the presence of epic elements in Castilian chivalric romans. As an example, it is analysed the prologue to the Fourth Part of Florisel de Niquea (1551) written by Feliciano de Silva. This work proposes Carlos V is the true tribute in the paratext, and not his daughter archduchess Maria, to whom the book is dedicated. The prologue narrates the Muhlberg´s battle with a heroic tone and a noticeable epic detail in order to create the war scene. Silva makes the entire artistic machinery that seeks to enhance the image of Carlos V as the great Renaissance hero through concepts like the heroic virtue or the monarch's topic such as Miles Christi.
