Los llamados estudios culturales representan un área de investigación reciente, pero de rápido crecimiento en las humanidades. Su objeto de análisis comprende todos los artefactos significativos de la cultura, sin olvidar la forma en que tales artefactos son producidos, diseminados y consumidos dentro de un marco específico. Su finalidad es comprender la cultura en toda la complejidad de sus formas y dentro del contexto político y social en el que se manifiesta, una cultura que es simultáneamente concebida como objeto de estudio y como lugar de posicionamientos críticos e ideológicos. Los veinte ensayos aquí reunidos tienen su origen en la Conferencia sobre Estudios Culturales Hispánicos celebrada en la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (Miami, 23-25 de febrero de 2006) y representan tres de las tendencias dominantes en la nueva crítica cultural: la recuperación de la memoria histórica desde una óptica revisionista, las nuevas políticas de la identidad y su reformulación de las cuestiones de género y orientación sexual, y el estudio de la relación entre la literatura y las otras artes.

The portrayal of Hispanics in American film and television has focused traditionally on negative stereotypes of the worst values and traditions of the Spanish-speaking communities in the country, with a racist and prejudiced misrepresented focus, a sample of the superficiality and hatred by some in the media industry. Recent examples show that our theory is not so far from reality as we all do want.

"Latinos are now the largest ethnic minority population in the United States and still they encounter a great deal of misunderstanding, prejudice, and discrimination. Utilizing a strengths-based perspective, Social Work Practice with Latinos addresses the unique needs of this diverse population.

Written by practitioners and scholars from many disciplines, this book discusses social issues of consequence to Latinos and specific strengths and risk factors of the Latino community. They then offer methods that utilize these strengths to ensure a culturally-competent approach to practice with Latino populations. Each chapter is accompanied by key questions for personal and group reflection to facilitate discussion and understanding of these vital themes.

The editors have nearly three decades of combined experience working with Latino populations inside and outside the United States. Drawing on this experience, they integrate these varied perspectives to prepare students and practitioners for practice with this richly diverse community."

This article addresses the reasons why too few social workers are prepared for practice with first- and second-generation Latino indi- viduals and families, primarily from Mexico and Central America. To do so, the authors explore the social and contextual reasons for this paucity. Social risks and vulnerabilities of Latinos are assessed and are connected to social work’s mission to serve at-risk populations. The authors make suggestions for steps the profession can take to increase the number and quality of social workers who are equipped to practice with this growing population

El objetivo del presente trabajo es dar una vista panorámica de los aspectos generales de la corrupción en España y de sus efectos, especialmente en cuanto a los medios de comunicación. Inicialmente, se explicará el término corrupción y se enfatizará en la dificultad de hacer una definición completa. Seguidamente, se presentarán las diferentes maneras de medir el nivel de la corrupción en un país, incluyendo las ventajas y desventajas de cada uno de los métodos. La parte principal se dedica a la corrupción especialmente en España, empezando con las características y efectos de la corrupción, dando cifras y datos concretos en cuanto a la cantidad de casos y personas imputadas y una idea general de casos de corrupción relacionados con los partidos políticos PSOE y PP. Finalmente, se investigará el papel de los medios de comunicación en cuanto a su influencia en la opinión pública y su relación con los partidos políticos. Aquí se presentará el caso Bárcenas como ejemplo.

La Guerra hispano-cubano-americana ha sido interpretada de forma radicalmente diferente por cada una de las partes implicadas. En el caso español, y dependiendo del contexto político, ha dado lugar a visiones diametralmente opuestas del conflicto. Si durante la dictadura franquista el 98 representaba la traición de la clase política al estamento militar, a finales del milenio han dominado las versiones revisionistas que, aunque critican el ya agonizante colonialismo espaftol, denuncian a su vez las primeras manifestaciones del imperialismo norteamericano. El presente ensayo estudia el poder legitimador de las imágenes cinematográficas de este acontecimiento en distintas etapas de la historia política española.

This article presents an exploration of undocumented, Latino male immigrants in the United States, and assesses the impact of new state policies and their implications for social work practice. To meet its aims, we describe the psychosocial risks that they face, and situated these risks within the context of new state policy realities. Implications for practice are presented.

He aquí un núcleo decididamente antiguo (tratándose de villancicos españoles), cuyo canon se impone como reflejo autóctono ya teñido —factor esencial— de elementos coloniales. Es decir que el sincretismo se logra echando mano de un material externo transfundido, mediante un injerto temprano, en las copiosas vetas de la botánica lugareña. Una operación de 'boomerang' aparentemente sofisticada, pero en realidad bastante sencilla. Algo venido de fuera logra enraizar si encuentra el sustrato idóneo o, en otras palabras, en el momento exacto de su conjunción con una práctica local milenaria.

"Dionysius the Areopagite is a fascinating figure in the history of Christian Spirituality. He is mentioned briefly in the Acts of the Apostles as a member of the Court of the Areopagus who became a disciple of Paul in Athens (Acts 17:34 ). Nothing more is known of him, until his name resurfaces in the fifth century as a pseudonym for a mystical Christian author. I do not plan to go into the work or the identity questions surrounding the fifth century writer known as Pseudo-Dionysius, rather I wish to reflect a bit on the Areopagite as a symbol for the US Latino Catholic."

“On good days I feel I am a bridge. On bad days I just feel alone,” Sergio Troncoso writes in this riveting collection of sixteen personal essays in which he seeks to connect the humanity of his Mexican family to people he meets on the East Coast, including his wife’s Jewish kin. Raised in a home steps from the Mexican border in El Paso, Texas, Troncoso crossed what seemed an even more imposing border when he left home to attend Harvard College.

Initially, “outsider status” was thrust upon him; later, he adopted it willingly, writing about the Southwest and Chicanos in an effort to communicate who he was and where he came from to those unfamiliar with his childhood world. He wrote to maintain his ties to his parents and his abuelita, and to fight against the elitism he experienced at an Ivy League school. “I was torn,” he writes, “between the people I loved at home and the ideas I devoured away from home.”

Troncoso writes to preserve his connections to the past, but he puts pen to paper just as much for the future. In his three-part essay entitled “Letter to My Young Sons,” he documents the terror of his wife’s breast cancer diagnosis and the ups and downs of her surgery and treatment. Other essays convey the joys and frustrations of fatherhood, his uneasy relationship with his elderly father, and the impact his wife’s Jewish heritage and religion have on his Mexican-American identity.

Crossing Borders: Personal Essays reveals a writer, father and husband who has crossed linguistic, cultural and intellectual borders to provoke debate about contemporary Mexican-American identity.  Challenging assumptions about literature, the role of writers in America, fatherhood and family, these essays bridge the chasm between the poverty of the border region and the highest echelons of success in America. Troncoso writes with the deepest faith in humanity about sacrifice, commitment and honesty.
