A hydrogeological study was conducted in northwestern New Brunswick, Canada, to improve the predictability of fracture-dominated groundwater flow within folded bedrock composed of fine-grained turbidites. Borehole televiewer logging and outcrop mapping, integrated with hydraulic packer tests revealed enhanced hydraulic conductivity associated with northeasterly striking bedding-plane fractures formed during folding and flexural slip. These fractures impart azimuthal anisotropy to the aquifer because of moderately dipping fold limbs. High-angle fractures form a well-developed non-stratabound network, comprising two open fracture sets striking NNE parallel to the current direction of principal stress, and WNW parallel to the direction of principal stress that dominated during the Acadian orogeny. The subset of fractures showing significant oxidation, deemed most important to the groundwater flow system, is dominated by bedding-plane and high-angle fractures striking nearparallel to the maximum principal stress direction, resulting in extensional opening and enhanced hydraulic conductivities. An equivalent porous media model, incorporating anisotropy and varying hydraulic conductivity with depth, indicates that horizontal flow dominates the aquifer with relatively minor exchange between different model layers. These findings have implications for understanding flow directions in the Black Brook Watershed and elsewhere in the Matapédia Basin where fractures formed under similar stress conditions.

The study of groundwater potential in Wadi El-Assiuoti is of a prime importance for both current and future development. In this paper the groundwater occurrences are investigated using integrated; 1) geophysical well logging (Self potential, Resistivity and Gamma Ray), 2) subsurface lithologic data and 3) hydraulic data (transmissivity, transmissibility, hydraulic conductivity and storativity) in addition to reviewing all studies on Wadi El-Assiuoti. Different petrophysical parameters (formation water resistivity, formation factor, porosity, permeability, salinity and shale volume) are computed. These parameters are very necessary to identify the aquifers characteristics in the surveyed area. The integration between geophysical and hydrogeological data shows the possibility of two water bearing formation (Quaternary and Plio-Pleistocene). Generally, porosity and permeability values of these aquifers decrease toward the west. The aquifers exist under unconfined to semi confined conditions. The wide range values of both well efficiency and hydraulic conductivity indicate heterogeneity in the lithology and hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer materials. The computed transmissibility values indicate that the water-bearing sediments in the area under investigation are generally of high productivity. In some localities due to the heterogeneity of sediment, the water-bearing sediments are of moderate productivity. Recently, due to the increase of drilling activities at the middle part of the studied area some problems concerning the groundwater potential and high salinity in the area are happening.

In this study, the SP, DC-Resistivity and DC-TDIP methods were used and included 21 sites for determining the groundwater conditions and visualizing the aquifer sediments, surface water seepage, and groundwater flow in 2D and 3D. The results indicated the occurrence of Quaternary and Tertiary deposits, as well as shallow aquifer of Eocene fractured limestone and Quaternary deposits. The resistivity, chargeability and SP values were compared with each other and 2D and 3D visualization models were designed for these values to understand the sediment distribution and its geological and hydrogeological implications. High to medium, low and very low chargeability values indicated the compact sediments with high shale content, water-bearing layers and freshwater zones and dry sediments, respectively, and varied with the water amount, salinity and effective porosity. The Nubian sandstone aquifer's hydrogeophysical and natural radioactivity parameters at the Northwestern part of El Ain village, Sharq El Oweinat, Southwestern desert, Egypt are resolved using geophysical well logging and natural radioactivity techniques. The study aims to monitor the phenomenon of appearing an unusual high gamma-ray at a zone of high resistivity record. A nest of well logs is collected to assess how the phenomenon is widespread. Results of correlated well logs are clarified that this phenomenon at zone between 80 and 100 m and zone of 200 and 230m depth is noticed.  The petro-physical properties are estimated from the recorded well logs. The results showed that the percentage of the average of effective porosity % varies between 20 and 28.2%, while average vary from 2 to 12.5 %, which indicates that the aquifer of Nubian Sandstone is classified as a clean aquifer. A hand dug well was subjected to a number of pumping tests: step drawdown, constant discharge and recovery tests to provide some preliminary estimation of hydraulic parameters for the study area. The objectives of this study is to evaluate the yield of the wells, to determine the transmissivity of the well and the specific capacity of the wells. Some hand dug wells were selected for measurement of daily transmissivity. The parameter studied from the well includes: water yield; water recovery test was carried out and the transmissivity assessed. The results indicate that transmissivity T, and specific capacity SC, were 31.55x10- 5 m 3 /s, 16.7x10 -3 m 2 /s . respectively. Mean static water level (SWL), and well depths were 2.92m, 7.1m, respectively. It can be concluded that aquifers are of moderate potential from the recovery test.

Injana Formation is the most extended geological formation in Salahaddin Governorate/ Iraq. About 10% of the studied area is covered by the outcrops of the formation as a recharge area. The formation is a subsurface within the unsaturated zone in 5% of the total studied area, while it exists within the saturated zone in about 85%; it is a major confined groundwater aquifer. Therefore, the hydrogeological system of the layers needs to be re-evaluated to describe the successions of aquifers and confining layers and their relation with each other. Reliable hydraulic parameters values are essential and crucial basic data for potential groundwater withdrawal (aquifer yield) and also for sustainable groundwater management. They are also essential for simulation model study for different management scenario analyses. The laboratory test has limitations, while in situ tests produce representative aquifer parameters. The pumping test method is the only method that provides simultaneous information on the hydraulic behavior of the well, the aquifer, and the aquifer boundaries. In this study first locations of past occurrence were identified and an inventory form were created and integrated to GIS to derive landslide inventory map predictors. Secondly predictors causing landslides were identified from report of past landslides. Thirdly thematic maps of the identified predictors namely geomorphology, geology, drainage, rainfall, lineament, road, railway, soil, land use/land cover, slope and aspect were derived using Geographical Information System (GIS). Finally based on relative importance of factors and their categories influencing landslide susceptibility weights and ratings of predictors were calculated using two multi criteria approaches namely Analytical Hierarchy processes (AHP) and Spatial Multi Criteria Evaluation (SMCE). Steep slope, steep dips of the lithotypes, presence of clay layering in weathered rock types, events of continuous heavy rains, flooding on the slopes and improper land use practices play a major role in the genesis of landslides in the Nilgiris. Recent enhancement in the events of the landslides in the Nilgiris is mainly due to ongoing Seismotectonic activities in Southern Granulite Terrain (SGT) of South India and reactivation of hidden blind shear zones of Nilgiri Hills. Mitigation measures are highlighted.

Landslide is a common geo-hazard, can result in huge economic losses and enormous casualties in mountainous regions. Analysis of Landslide is a complex which involving multiples of factors and it need to be studied systematically in order to locate the prone zones for landslides. The topographic features play an important role in deciding the areas prone to landslides. In this study, an attempt has been made to derive the landslide cause behind topographic features such as Drainage, Slope and Geology of Mettupalayam-Udhagamandalam road sector lengths of 47 Kilometers. The Survey of India toposheets on 1: 50000 scales were used to extract contours in 20m intervals. The all mentioned parameters were analyzed in GIS by assigning weightages and ranks to prepare the landslide Vulnerability zone map for the study area. The landslide vulnerability map indicates the whole study area which has been divided into three zones as High, Moderate and Low Landslide Vulnerability Zone. Through the landslide hazard zonation map, it can finale that the low landslide zones are the prior for higher landslide vulnerability in the study area. This research would be a basis of landslide vulnerability and hazard assessment.

Generating GIS database for landslide locations is attempted in the present paper. Literature surveys were conducted to take the information on landslides. The existing landslide locations were collected from the Geological Survey of India Miscellaneous publications and other literature survey. This information was collected in the form of latitude and longitude data source. This data were given as input in GIS. To understand the event in year wise information is spatially given to understand the landslide distribution in the study area. Major landslides were recorded in the year 2009 with a human death loss of around 50 numbers in the study area. So for around 900 landslides were reported. But the number of slides present is not identified so far. Many scar landslides are also reported in this paper.

In order to construct the Deep Sea Port of Kribi (Cameroon), it was important to evaluate the hydrogeological characteristics of the aquifers in the area; so as to determine if there could be any environmental impact on the population. To achieve this, both a step-drawdown and a constant rate pumping test were carried out in two boreholes (PS41 and PS21). The hydrogeological units underlying the test sites are sands, silts and weathered rock layer for PS 41, and sands, clays and weathered rock layer for PS21. The coarse sand and the top of the weathered rock are the main aquifers in the investigation site. At PS41, the step-drawdown test was done in two steps with an interval of one hour and increasing pumping rates (0.1-0.2m 3 /h) while the constant rate pumping test was done at a pumping rate of 0.15m 3 /h for 3 hours. A hydrogeophysical model is presented for the South Havana Basin, Cuba, based on the processing of geophysical well logs, together with transmissivity data obtained from aquifer tests. The model provides clarification of the existing relationship between geophysical well log parameters and flow velocity, and demonstrates that longitudinal conductance is the best predictor of aquifer transmissivity.

Landslides are frequently occurring natural hazards in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, India, particularly during monsoon season. The present study describes the geotechnical characterization and analysis of rainfall-induced landslide that occurred at Marappalam location of Nilgiris district on November 10, 2009. The detailed investigation comprises mapping of landslide, topographical survey, field and laboratory investigations, characterization of soil and rock, and numerical analysis. Field study comprises borehole and geophysical investigations. Detailed laboratory investigation was performed to identify index and engineering properties of soil and rock. Based on the results obtained from field and laboratory investigations, the generalized subsoil profile of Marappalam slope has been plotted. The investigations revealed that loose and soft soil layer with low permeability and plasticity interspersed with boulders could be the main source of debris flow. Scanning electron microscopic analysis and x-ray diffraction analysis were performed to study the influence of weathering on slope failure. Failure mechanism of Marappalam 2009 landslide was identified from the numerical analysis performed using landslide simulation program LS-RAPID. The analysis revealed that the 5-day antecedent rainfall (303 mm) and intense rainfall on 10th November 2009 (405 mm) saturate the slope due to infiltration of rainwater. This leads to a decrease in the matric suction and subsequent development of positive pore water pressure, which in turn reduces the shear resistance of the soil along with shear displacement, and resulted in a progressive failure.

Groundwater resources are gaining much attention with increasing demands for water due to increasing population, urbanization and agricultural expansion in Egypt. First objective of this paper is to interpret Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) in a number of stations covering Assiut Governorate to assess the geometry of the Quaternary aquifer (QA). The VES interpretation covered the determination of depth, thickness and true resistivity of the geoelectrical layers and then picking the water bearing layer (aquifer). The VES interpretation reflects the outstanding role of QA variation in the studied area. Second objective is to use open-hole logging data from 52 wells for determining the detailed reservoir characteristics to evaluate the hydrogeologic and petrophysical parameters of the aquifer. The well log analysis procedures are performed in different phases led to formation evaluation using specially designed program utilizing the level by level technique. Accordingly, the QA petrophysical parameters including the total, effective porosity, shale content, permeability, lithology, Bulk Volume Water (BVW), water salinity and net pay presented in the form of litho-saturation cross-plots and distribution maps. Such parameters are useful in case of subjecting the area to modeling or GIS studies. Correlation of results indicates that the QA thickness decreases gradually towards the fringes. Total porosity values vary from 23.77% to 39.76%, and the effective one from 21.16% to 38.46%. The calculated permeability values reflect high quality of the studied aquifer. Furthermore, the estimated low shale volumes (4.48 to 25.88%) and high sand volumes (45.59% to 65.62%) of the water-bearing horizons confirmed the good quality of the aquifer. Total dissolved solids (TDS) are in the range from about 400 to 1000 ppm, which indicate fresh type of groundwater.

Rainfall is one of the major causes of landslides/landslips across the globe. The fatalities and damage caused by rainfall induced landslides increased in recent days. The Nilgiris district in Western Ghats part of Tamil Nadu state is one of the very high to severe landslide hazard-prone areas of India.  The present study is focused on estimation of rainfall thresholds and the temporal probability of landslides in different landslide-prone slopes in part of The Nilgiris district. The landslide prone areas identified in earlier research are used for the present study.  The landslide locations data for the years 1824 to 2018 were collected and a spatial database on landslide inventory was created. A detailed inventory carried out on the 2009 landslides were analysed and used for the calculation of rainfall thresholds. Monthly and Yearly Rainfall data for the years 2000 to 2011 were collected for 37 rainguage stations from various government agencies. Based on the quality and quantity of data, the rainfall thresholds for 14 different locations were estimated viz., Aderly, Coonoor, Coonoor Railway, Governor Sola, Ooty (Near Botanical Garden), Runnymedu, Burliar where the probability of landslide occurrences is high.  The temporal probability of landslide was calculated for four years viz., 1, 3, 5 and 10 years. The present study can be used as a key to develop an early warning system in The Nilgiris District.

This research presents the results of a landslide susceptibility mapping using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based statistical namely Spatial Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE) in Camba Sub-district, Maros Regency, South Sulawesi. Ten physical factors encompassed soil type, slope, slope aspect, rock type, altitude, land cover, distance from the river, rainfall, distance from faults, and distance from the road that collected from several sources and used to determined landslide susceptible areas. SMCE was applied to classify the degree of landslide susceptibility from low to very high classes. Validation using 30 points of landslide events obtained from field survey. The result showed an area with high and very high classes has an area 2079 ha (18,3 %) and 52,5 ha (0,46 %) distributed in the southern region. The results of validation using the R-index for very high and high classes is 55% and ROC shows that of 96.4%, for the P show method of 98%. This landslide mapping can be used for disaster mitigation and disaster preparedness planning purposes.

Landslides in Western Ghats of India, particularly within Nilgiris district have been impacting negatively on the social and economic lives of the people. As a result, appropriate management measures needs to be adequately taken to reduce the risk from potential landslides. This study aimed at delineating and ranking landslide potential zones in order to minimize its future threat within Nilgiris district. Several methods including geospatial, quantitative, empirical and statistical methods have been used exclusively or simultaneously for delineating and ranking landslides vulnerability. This study examines landslide vulnerable areas in Nilgiris district using a comparative approach. Geospatial analysis and Landslide Susceptibility Values (LSV) analysis from Frequency Ratio techniques were implemented and the outputs were comparatively analyzed. Multi Influencing Factor (MIF) method has been used for the computation of the weightages and weighted-overlay analysis was performed using GIS. In LSV method, susceptibility factor for each parameter has been computed at sub-category level. Slope, Aspect, Rainfall, Lineament density, Drainage density, Geological Formation, Soil types and Land use/Land cover were used as the input parameters and were obtained from LANDSAT 8, CARTOSAT DEM and other agencies like Survey of India, Geological Survey of India. The output maps were ranked into four zones (Very Low, Low, Moderate and High prone zones) based on the degree of potential threat. The results were comparatively analyzed and validated by ground-truthing and superimposing landslides inventory data (reference data). The most accurate output map is determined and recommended for strategic and developmental planning so as to minimize landslides future threats in Nilgiris district.

The slope instability in hilly slope areas is due to construction activities, clearing the natural vegetation, unplanned resort development tourist activities, etc. The landslide susceptibility mapping is an effective tool for the development of hilly areas to analyse the slope stability along the road network. This paper attempts a GIS based multi-criterion methodology to identify landslide susceptibility zonation in CNG (Calicut-Nilampur-Gudalur) – 37 ghat section in Nadugani, Gudalur taluk, The Nilgiris district. The environmental geological factors used for the landslide susceptibility analysis include, geology, weathering thickness, geomorphology, lineament, lineament density, lineament intensity, lineament buffer and slope. The existing landslide locations were collected from the Geological Survey of India Miscellaneous publications and other literature survey. This information was collected in the form of latitude and longitude data source. This data were given as input in GIS. To understand the event in year wise information is spatially given to understand the landslide distribution in the study area. Major landslides were recorded in the year 2009 with a human death loss of around 50 numbers in the study area. So for around 900 landslides were reported. But the number of slides present is not identified so far. Many scar landslides are also reported in this paper.
