Green Libraries

Teknolojinin gelişmesi ile birlikte küresel anlamda meydana gelen değişimler, ekonomik dalgalanmalar yeryüzünün kaynak noktasında azalmasına neden olmaktadır. Meydana gelen bu etkiler ile birlikte çevresel tehditler artarak yapılaşma noktasında değişimi de zorlamaktadır. Kütüphanenin oluşumunda etkili olan bina faktörü ile bulunmuş olduğu konum itibariyle yükümlü olduğu belirli işlevler bulunmaktadır. Bu işlevler ile birlikte belirli yöntemler doğrultusunda hareket ederek en iyi şekilde hizmet vermeye çalışmaktadır. Kütüphaneler, belirlenen özel tasarımlar ile inşa edilmiş veya farklı bir amaç için kullanılan binaların tasarımını kütüphane formatına dönüştürülerek faaliyet sürdürmektedir. Kütüphane amacı ile inşa edilen veya onarılan bu yapılar çevre üzerinde doğrudan veya dolaylı etkilere sahiptirler. Bu yapıların kullanılması, yenilenmesi ve yıkılması, yeniden kullanılmaya başlandığı sırada enerji, su kullanımı, atıkların üretimi ve kirli gazların ortaya çıkmasını beraberinde getirmektedir. Ortaya çıkan bu olumsuz etkileri yok etmek çok kolay olmasa da etkilerini minimum düzeye indirgemek mümkün olabilir. Her yaşta herkesin yaşam boyu öğrenme merkezi olan kütüphaneler, bilgi kaynaklarını korumak ve bilgi hizmetlerini sunmak değildir, aynı zamanda çevreye karşı duyarlılığı arttırmak ve Uluslararası Standartlar doğrultusunda uygulamaları kendi bünyesinde gerçekleştirerek bir örnek teşkil etmektir. Çevre dostu binaların bir akımı olan yeşil kütüphane binaları, doğanın dengesini korumaya katkı sağlamakla birlikte emsalleri ile aynı kalitede olabilecek, daha düşük bütçeler ile üretilmesi ve çevre kirliliğinde en az pay sahibi olması gerekmektedir. Sürdürülebilir kavramı ile birlikte yeşil kütüphaneler, üçüncü mekân teknoloji-kütüphane ilişkisi gibi yeni kavramlara eşlik eden çağrışımlar ortaya çıkmaktadır. Yeşil kütüphane olarak nitelendirilen mekânlar çevreci hareketi kapsamında belirli faaliyetler sonucunda yapıları gereği doğa ile uyumlu bir ahenk sağlamaktadır. Çevreci bir bakışla düzenlenen kütüphane binaları bünyesinde barındırmış olduğu koleksiyonlar ve kütüphane uygulamaları dışında, binaların çevresel sürdürülebilirliği açısından katkısı olacağı inkâr edilemez. Yeşil kütüphane hareketi kapsamında inşa edilen kütüphane binalarını, Kaliforniya Atık Yönetim Kurulu, binayı ekolojik açıdan kaynak verimliliği sağlayan ve yeniden kullanılabilir, malzemelerden inşa edilmiş bina türü olarak tanımlanır. Yeşil kütüphane binaları belirtilen tanım doğrultusunda çevrenin yeşil kalması, binanın yapımı veya onarılması ile birlikte bulunduğu konumun dengesini az zarar ile sağlık açısından katkı sunan yapılardır. Yeşil kütüphane binaları belirtilen bazı özellikler doğrultusunda tasarlanmaktadır. Binaların inşası noktasında terk edilmiş bir sanayi bölgesi tercih edilmesi önerilebilir. Bu sanayi noktasının çevreye kazandırılması açısından önemli bir husustur. Bunun için alan seçimi yeşil kütüphane binaları açısından önemli olduğu söylenebilir. Binalar mevcut yapısı korunarak bir onarma işlemine tâbi tutulacak ise binanın bulunduğu konum yeşile elverişli değilse, maliyet-fayda hesabı yapılarak maliyeti hesaplanır ve gerekli iyileştirmeler yapılabilir. Yeşil kütüphaneler ulaşım için alternatif ulaşım seçeneklerini destekleyerek kullanıcılar için bisiklet yolu ve park gibi alanları tasarlayabilirler. Buna yönelik ayrıca toplu taşıma araçlarına, metro istasyonlarına yakın olması da bir diğer seçenek olarak belirlenebilir. Yeşil kütüphane binaları çevreci bakışı ile enerji kullanımı için binalarda yenilenebilir enerji kaynakları(güneş, rüzgâr, jeotermal) kullanılabilir. Binaların çatı kısımları için yeşil renk kullanılması da öngörülmektedir. Yeşil rengin havada bulunan toz ve yağmur sularında ki zararlı maddeleri tutucu özelliğine sahiptir.

Building green library is a well-informed and conscious choice and responding to environmentalism. In fact, library has long been practising ‘reuse’ principle as one of the three basic principles of sustainability. We just need to address other two i.e., reduce and recycle through its actions and choices. Present study has closely examined the potential aspects of the library for greening through which we can realise sustainable library and information services. Finally it is concluded with notes for further research challenges for this complex as well as economically, philosophically, culturally and climatologically challenging issue.

Introduction/Abstract:
Developing buildings that are sustainable and walk softly on the landscape is an area where libraries have shown considerable accomplishment, and in so doing, serve as examples of
both ingenuity and ethical leadership. This paper presents experiences and research on sustainable library buildings that are inspiring, functional, and successful.

The paper consists of two sections. The first section answers the questions: What does sustainable mean? What are examples of library building projects across the world that have
developed sustainable, green buildings? What are the characteristics of those buildings that define sustainability, effectiveness, and cost efficiency? The focus is on well-developed, full size library facilities and includes two case studies of award-winning Green Libraries, including interviews with the architects that designed them.

The second section suggests that developing a green building is only the first step to assuring sustainability. Other necessary, long term components are required, including, understanding the needs of the community being served, developing strategies to deliver services, building organizations and providing leadership relevant to the community. Two examples of creative and innovative responses to challenged situations are offered in this
section -- one whose solutions have been critical to the survival of a number of communities in East Africa, and another in Greece, that through leadership strategies, unique services
and the use of technology to build community and collaboration, has marketed their successes and brought significant benefit to their community.

The emergence of ICT in the field of library and information science has
changed the face of today’s libraries. In the technology driven era the services offered by
a library and the responsibilities of the librarian have been changed tremendously. The
current study attempts to depict the overview of an Institution Repository. The chief
objective of the study is to find out different issues, challenges and contents of an
Institutional Repository. The study also gives an idea about Indian institutional
repository scenario. The study suggests that definite policies should be made before
building up an institutional repository in terms intellectual property rights.

With the existence of green library concept, the field of library science could change its Scenario into a different angel. Being a multi-faceted approach, this concept deals also with the green information literacy. Green information literacy is not only gathering literature related to green concept but also enhancing a self-awareness on the concept among the staff and users. As a new trend in Sri Lankan perspective, green concept functions in few libraries. As the heart of the governing institution, SLIDA library is rich with green practices. As a result, SLIDA was rewarded with the green award in 2018. The information literacy and the awareness on green concept is needed for such an achievement. Therefore, the sole objective of this study was to identify the impact of green information literacy of library staff to establish green concept in the library. 5 main fields namely, library building, collection, information systems, practices and programs or services were investigated when interviewing the library staff to measure their green information literacy covering 23 green indicators. The data were collected through the answers given in the interview. Accordingly, green information literacy was evaluated with simple calculation. A pesquisa parte do pressuposto de que as bibliotecas públicas, municipais e estaduais no Brasil, em função de sua condição e de sua missão, devem ser as primeiras a adotarem princípios e práticas de sustentabilidade, com vistas a se constituírem como referências em equipamentos culturais verdes no país. Dessa forma, a presente pesquisa tem como objetivo refletir e discutir o conceito de informação ambiental e de biblioteca verde e sustentável, assim como identificar bibliotecas públicas certificadas no país, visando subsidiar a construção de políticas públicas nesta área. Apresenta os esforços do governo federal na gestão da informação ambiental e a ausência de estímulos para a adoção de práticas sustentáveis e certificação das bibliotecas que recebem investimentos públicos. Aponta passos para a certificação nas construções, design, arquitetura, gestão de recursos naturais e ambientais e educação ambiental em bibliotecas, bem como diretrizes para subsidiar a elaboração de políticas culturais e estimular os governos locais a adotarem princípios e práticas de sustentabilidade nas bibliotecas públicas brasileiras. Conclui que os investimentos governamentais na construção e modernização de bibliotecas públicas devem prever a adoção de princípios de sustentabilidade em seus prédios, serviços e práticas com o objetivo de incidir positivamente no desenvolvimento sustentável de sua região. Abstract The research assumes that public, state and municipal libraries in Brazil, due to its condition and its mission should be the first to adopt sustainability principles and practices in order to become a reference in green cultural equipment in the country. It aims to reflect and discuss the concept of environmental information and green and sustainable library, as well as identify certified public libraries in the country in order to support the construction of public policies in this area. It shows the efforts of the federal government in the management of environmental information, and the lack of incentives for the adoption of sustainable practices and certification of libraries that receive public investments. Points out steps for certification in construction, design, architecture, management of natural and environmental resources, and environmental education in libraries and guidelines to support the development of cultural policies and encourage local governments to adopt sustainability principles and practices in Brazilian public libraries. It concludes that government investments in construction and modernization of public libraries shall consider the adoption of sustainability principles in their buildings, services and practices with in order to have a positive impact on the sustainable development of their region.

Tarih boyunca toplumun bilgi gereksinimini karşılama amacıyla oluşturulan kütüphaneler, ilk ortaya çıkışlarından itibaren her zaman bir mekana sahip olmuşlardır. Çünkü bina, kütüphaneyi oluşturan temel bileşenlerden biridir. Geçmişten bugüne bilgi kaynaklarının toplandığı bu kütüphane binaları, aynı zaman diliminde birden fazla kişiye hizmet veren, içerdikleri materyaller ile bulundukları çevreyi etkileyen ve bu çevreden etkilenen mekanlardır. Bir başka deyişle iç ve dış çevre koşullarındaki olumsuzluklar kütüphane binasını, binadaki olumsuzluklar ise çevreyi etkilemektedir. Binada kullanılan enerji kaynakları ve üretilen atıklar, enerji tasarrufu ve çevre kirliliği açısından değerlendirilmesi ve önlem alınması gereken önemli konulardır.

Halen kullanılan taşkömürü, linyit, petrol, doğalgaz gibi yenilenemez geleneksel yakıtların çevreye verdikleri zararlar ve maliyetlerindeki yükseklik, insanlığı güneş enerjisi, rüzgar enerjisi, jeotermal enerji gibi alternatif enerji kaynaklarını kullanmaya yönlendirmiştir. Günümüzde binalarda kullanılan bu fosil kökenli yakıtların yerini artık bu tür yenilenebilir enerji kaynakları almaktadır. Fosil kökenli yakıtların tüketimi sonucunda atmosfere salınan zararlı gazların oluşturduğu kirlilik ve iklim değişikliklerine neden olan küresel ısınmaya çözüm olarak geliştirilen yöntemler, sürdürülebilir bir çevre oluşturma yönündedir. Sürdürülebilir mimarlık yaklaşımı ise, çevreye zarar vermeyen ve enerji tasarruflu binalar tasarlama ve üretme sürecidir.  Bu çalışmanın amacı; kütüphane binalarının sürdürülebilir bir çevre içerisinde konumlandırılarak nasıl bir sürdürülebilir mimarlık yaklaşımıyla tasarlanıp üretilerek kullanılabileceğini ve var olan binalara da nasıl bu özelliklerin kazandırılabileceğini araştırmaktır. Gelişmiş ülkelerde bu yaklaşımla oluşturulmuş ya da bu özellikler sonradan kazandırılmış kütüphane binaları olmasına rağmen ülkemizde henüz “yeşil bina” sertifikasına sahip bir kütüphane binasının olmayışı, bu çalışmanın yapılması konusunda başlangıç noktası olmuştur. Kütüphane binalarının sürdürülebilir mimarlık yaklaşımıyla ele alındığı Türkçe kaynakların yetersiz oluşu nedeniyle yurtdışında yapılan çalışmalar incelenmiş, Çalışmada öncelikle kavram olarak “sürdürülebilirlik” ele alınmış, sonra sürdürülebilir mimarlık yaklaşımı incelenmiş, kütüphane binaları da bu bağlamda değerlendirilmiş ve sonuçta, kütüphane binalarının sürdürülebilir mimarlık ilkelerini taşıyarak enerji tasarruflu ve çevreye zarar vermeyen binalar olabilmelerinin koşulları ortaya konulmuştur.

Recent years have seen a marked increase in the prevalence and visibility of “eco-friendly” products in the West. The library world seems to show little divergence from this trend, particularly where promotional items are concerned. At conferences, we are handed tote bags made of recycled pop bottles, notebooks made of recycled cardboard and paper, and highlighters made of biodegradable plastic resins. Indeed, a glance at any promotional product supply catalogue is likely to turn up entire sections devoted to “eco” products. The increased availability and embrace of such alternatives within the library world is certainly a positive development (where product claims to “eco-friendliness” are well-founded, at least). Often practical and remarkably cost-effective, the use of such products resonates powerfully with increasing public concern around environmental issues, showing, in a sense, that we are listening – that we inhabit the same world as our users.

There are nevertheless important questions to be raised about the limits of “eco-friendly” shopping as an expression of green librarianship, particularly where patterns of resource consumption and waste remain unchanged. This chapter confronts such limits, seeking to generate discussion around both the possibilities and the pitfalls of “green” consumerism in the library world. Grounding my discussion in an account of green librarianship as an extension of our established and practiced professional commitment to intergenerational sustainability and knowledges, I argue that green librarianship must include but ultimately move beyond purchasing strategies to a more fundamental – and practical – reconsideration of resource use.

Bu çalışma gerek kurumsal gerek bireysel bağlamda üniversite kütüphanelerinde gerçekleştirilen yeşil (çevre dostu) uygulamaları belirlemek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Betimleme yönteminin kullanıldığı bu araştırma kapsamında veri toplama tekniği olarak kütüphane yöneticilerine ve kütüphanecilere olmak üzere toplam iki adet anketten yararlanılmıştır. Türkiye’deki 182 üniversite kütüphanesinden 165’inde görev yapmakta olan toplam 165 yönetici ve 1.614 kütüphaneciye çevrim içi anket gönderilmiş, 45 yönetici ve 341 kütüphaneci anketi yanıtlamıştır. Yönetici anketi, sürdürülebilir çevre, su tasarrufu, enerji tasarrufu, sürdürülebilir kaynak ve materyaller, iç mekân hava kalitesi, tasarım ve uygulamada yenilikler olmak üzere altı ana bölümden oluşmakta ve kurumsal bazda bilgi toplamayı amaçlamaktadır. Kütüphaneci anketi ise demografik bilgiler, günlük yaşamda çevresel farkındalık ve tutum, yeşil kütüphaneler olmak üzere üç ana bölümden oluşmaktadır. Anket aracılığıyla elde edilen verilerin değerlendirilmesinde betimleme yönteminden yararlanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler IBM SPSS Statistics 23.0 paket programı aracılığı ile analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda, Türkiye’deki üniversite kütüphanelerinin yeşil kütüphane olma yolunda bazı kriterleri (toplu taşıma araçlarına yakınlık, ulaşımda alternatif seçeneklere yönelim, su tasarruflu tesisat kullanımı, su tüketiminin takip edilmesi, elektronik araç gereçlerin mesai saatleri dışında kapalı tutulması, binalarda çift cam özelliği, basılı kaynakların bağış ya da geri dönüşümü ile kâğıt israfına karşı önlem alınması) sağlamakla birlikte önemli eksiklerinin bulunduğu, çevresel yaklaşımlar/yeşil uygulamalar açısından üniversiteler arası farklılıklar olduğu ve bazı kütüphanelerin (Atılım, Bilkent, Başkent ve Yaşar Üniversitesi kütüphaneleri gibi) sürdürülebilir çevre, su ve enerji tasarrufu, sürdürülebilir materyaller-kaynaklar, iç mekân hava kalitesi ve tasarım ve uygulamada yenilikler kapsamında diğerlerinden daha yeşil olduğu görülmüştür. Kütüphanecilerin yeşil kütüphaneler ve çevresel sürdürülebilirlik konularında algı ve farkındalık düzeyleri düşük olmakla birlikte bu konularda eğitime ve farkındalık artırıcı girişimlere sıcak baktıkları belirlenmiştir.

Given the wide range of challenges that are framed in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (document issued by the United Nations Organization in 2015), the libraries of each country —among other documentary information systems such as archives, museums, repositories— have the mission of supporting the improvement and well-being of their communities through actions that ensure equal access to documentary information. These systems must be constituted as networks that allow the integration of the various sectors that make up a society, through the incorporation of digital technologies to increase the management capacity of information flows. The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) has the Information System of the Sustainable Development Goals —platform operated in conjunction with the Coordination of the National Digital Strategy—, which makes available to its users the information on the progress in the follow-up to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Although this tool is also relevant for the indicators it offers, another way of verifying these advances is to approach some of our library centers, quantum if we consider that in Mexico we have the first sustainable library in Latin America, located in Tepoztlán, Morelos. In this interview, a pleasant conversation was held with one of the librarians of this entity, who, needless to say, is a young professional graduated from the College of Library Science (UNAM): Graduate Juan Manuel Vilchis Martínez.

Esta reflexión proviene de una intervención educativa que se comienza a implementar con usuarios del CRAI Universidad Santo Tomás; mediante una metodología participativa, ellos construirán un concepto propio de cultura ambiental; asimismo, conocerán cómo la función de la biblioteca se ha transformado en respuesta a necesidades sociales ineludibles tales como el saber ambiental. Las bibliotecas han superado su función como gestoras de información y han asumido una función social, basada en su potencial alfabetizador. A partir de dicha transformación, se explora el rol de las bibliotecas en la eco-alfabetización desde el concepto de David Orr y Fritjot Capra. En la relación biblioteca – ecoalfabetización se atribuye a la biblioteca: la promoción de la multiculturalidad, la libertad intelectual y el acceso equitativo a la información y a la participación en la construcción del conocimiento. Desde estos principios, las bibliotecas deben trabajar para ser escenarios que fomenten la participación en la construcción del conocimiento ambiental.

Discute a contribuição do bibliotecário para a Educação Ambiental, mostrando a importância dele como educador, levando conhecimento teórico e ações práticas para as pessoas, com o intuito de que tenham hábitos ecologicamente corretos. Apresenta o perfil do bibliotecário considerando-o como o profissional que dissemina a informação, acreditando que ele não pode ficar de fora dessas discussões; também estes enquanto cidadãos e profissionais devem atuar nessa área, ajudando da melhor forma possível a disseminar a informação ambiental, criando estratégias, redes, projetos e outras ações para conscientizar as pessoas e diminuir o impacto do ser humano no meio ambiente. Ressalta que a área de Biblioteconomia tem e deve se relacionar com a Educação Ambiental. Assim, o bibliotecário estará contribuindo para gerar pensamentos críticos, alcançar comportamentos ecologicamente corretos, além de contribuir para o desenvolvimento sustentável da região.

Brazil, a world leader in natural resources, has been taking measures in order to guarantee an effective implementation of public policies, as well as effective environmental and educational management in its practices and services by aiming at environmental sustainability. However, regarding the Library Science field, specially the sector of Public Libraries, the roles and responsibilities of these institutions and librarians are little discussed in this scenario. This paper assumes that public libraries are institutions supported by the government, therefore they should be the first institutions to incorporate principles of sustainability and turn themselves into models of green cultural facilities in the country. This work presents a brief scenario of Brazilian public libraries, especially the Biblioteca Parque do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, the only facility of its kind that has achieved the Gold LEED Environmental Certificate. It also discusses the Ministry of Environment's Sala Verde project, which offers a collection of environmental books which aim at fostering the development of green rooms and their patrimony for environmental education and sustainability in Brazilian libraries. This study also suggests national guidelines for the implementation of public policies for green and sustainable libraries in the country. The objective is to stimulate such implementation in local and state governments.

Sustainable development is ' a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'. Eco friendly libraries are examples of these values, as they are trying to inculcate the same in the society through their services. Eco friendly libraries are disctinct over other libraries not only in the physical appearance but it is also in the concept of services offered. To understand the concept of eco friendly libraries, the author has studied eco friendly libraries and has put her observations and findings in this paper.

One constant in academic librarianship is change; particularly in the ways librarians perform their work. How do librarians serve their stated missions while approaching new technologies in an environmentally responsible fashion? This chapter reports on how librarians in higher education are taking a leadership role in reducing energy demands to access library resources.

New Bulgarian University Library gradually shifts its focus toward adopting green technologies and resources for information literacy. Two new technological trends in education: BYOD (bring your own device) and games and gamification are steadily being recognized and adopted by librarians. A jQuery-generated site for mobile devices is used to gamify students' introduction to information literacy. We seek to achieve: 1. a paperless environment; 2. a dynamic and mobile access to information and feedback; 3. switching from a lecture-based teaching style to a more constructivist approach, and encourage students to build knowledge on their own while pursuing a game-like activity; 4. better interaction with lecturers in subject-based teaching. Este trabalho é resultado da investigação realizada em âmbito federal sobre bibliotecas verdes e sustentáveis no Brasil. Teve por objetivo principal refletir e discutir os conceitos propostos pelas bibliotecas verdes e sustentáveis com vistas a subsidiar a construção de políticas públicas para a área. Partiu do princípio que as bibliotecas públicas municipais e estaduais devem ser as primeiras a adotar os princípios e práticas da sustentabilidade e a se constituírem em referência em equipamento cultural verde no país. O referencial teórico realizou-se através de pesquisa bibliográfica e para identificar a existência de iniciativas que se caracterizavam como bibliotecas verdes no Brasil, delimitou-se uma pesquisa documental, além da análise de conteúdo acerca da documentação referente aos investimentos do governo federal nas denominadas Bibliotecas Referências, as quais receberam recursos financeiros por meio do Programa " Mais Cultura " do Ministério da Cultura (MinC) no período de 2008 a 2010. Os resultados apontaram a Biblioteca Parque do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (BPERJ) como único equipamento do gênero no país que adotou em seu projeto de reforma os princípios de sustentabilidade e recebeu o certificado ambiental LEED Ouro. A partir da experiência da BPERJ propõe-se que o governo federal estabeleça diretrizes para implementar políticas públicas voltadas para a criação e manutenção de bibliotecas públicas municipais e estaduais verdes e sustentáveis no país.
