Es gehört zu den Traditionen der "International Conference on the Literature of Region and Nation", dass auch das gastgebende Land mit einem Beitrag zu seiner Literatur zu Wort kommt. Gerne habe ich daher die Einladung angenommen, über ein Thema aus der deutschen Literatur zu sprechen. Die Wahl des Themas ist mir nicht leichtgefallen, denn über Nation und Region gäbe es mit Blick auf die deutsche Literatur eine Menge zu sagen. Das natürlich vor allem, weil das Konzept nationaler Identität in Deutschland besonders problematische und auch sehr abscheuliche Folgen gehabt hat. Und eine Folge dieser Folgen ist, dass deutsche Schriftsteller nach 1945 große Mühe hatten mit Begriffen wie "Nation" oder "Vaterland". Es waren Tabu-Wörter geworden. Und nicht nur die Wörter wurden gemieden, auch der durch sie bezeichnete Themenkomplex. Statt an Nationales hielten sich viele deutsche Autoren lieber an Regionales. Oder platter formuliert: Nicht Berlin und Deutschland sind Thema der sog. Nachkriegsliteratur, sondern die je eigene überschaubare

Ein Hinweis für finnische Leser 1 Im August 1952 fährt ein 21 Jahre alter Student von Deutschland nach Finnland. Drei Monate arbeitet er in Lappeenranta als Praktikant im Stahlwerk Kaukas, als Handlanger für Werkzeugmacher, Installateure, Klempner und Schweißer. Die Sprache lernt er nicht, aber er kommt trotzdem klar mit den rauen finnischen Arbeitskollegen. Und der junge Mann bleibt in den Winter hinein in Finnland, findet im abgelegenen Vehmersalmi bei Kuopio Zeit zum Lesen, Alexis Kivis Sieben Brüder. Mit Lauri, dem Träumer und Waldgänger identifiziert er sich. Die Kivi-Lektüre sollte Folgen haben. 32 Jahre später wird der Werkstudent von einst die bisher gewichtigste Kivi-Studie in deutscher Sprache vorlegen, eine Untersuchung zur finnischen und deutschen Rezeption der Sieben Brüder, des nach wie vor wichtigsten finnischen Romans, zwischen 1870 und 1980, erschienen zu Kivis 150. Geburtstag 1984. Und noch einmal 15 Jahre später erscheint nun im Zürcher Ammann-Verlag ein Prosabuch dieses einstigen Kaukas-Praktikanten, das auf vielfältige Weise auf Kivis Sieben Brüder Bezug nimmt. Etwa durch die Integration von Gedichten, Geschichten, Anekdoten und Sprüchen in den Prosatext, dann durch die Aufteilung in exakt 14 Kapitel und auch durch die Gattungsbezeichnung "Erzählung", obwohl die Fluchtfährte -wie Kivis Buch -eigentlich eher ein Roman ist, ein autobiographischer freilich.

In the humanities and social sciences, the politics of memory and related culture of remembrance increase their significance, affecting legislation, historiography, and political science. This article aims to present key approaches to studying the politics of memory and employ them to the analysis of the politics of memory on the territory of the former German province of East Prussia. The author shows different research perspectives on the key concepts of memory studies. Some researchers identify the notion of the ‘politics of memory’ with that of the ‘politics of history’, while others distinguish between them. The author evaluates the effects of using the category of ‘memory sites’. Applying the method of historiographical analysis, the author examines similarities of and differences between approaches to the politics of history and the politics of memory. The author evaluates the effects of using the notions of ‘memory sites’ and
‘memory conflicts’ in the Baltic Region states, and reviews recent works of historians and political scientists on the changes in the culture of remembrance in Russia in general and the Kaliningrad region in particular during the Soviet and
post-Soviet periods. Modern historiography is used as an example to demonstrate that ‘memory sites’ and the ‘politics of history’ are the most relevant concepts in the study of the culture of remembrance and identity, whereas a comparative analysis proves to be effective for the identification of the main features of the politics of memory on the territory of the former East Prussia.
