Cultural Difference In Everyday Life

As a means to improve the school quality in Indonesia, Indonesian government introduced and encouraged two different kinds of programs: The International Standard Schools and Acceleration Class Program. Both programs are expected to contribute to improve the quality of education system in Indonesia. However, quantitative analysis to evaluate their impact on student's performance is lacking in the literature. In this paper, we use the Difference in Difference method (DD) using the school data from Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) to estimate the effectiveness of both programs in increasing school performance, measured by their national exam score. We then combined the cost data with this effectiveness measure to compare their cost-effectiveness. Our finding suggests that international standard school program is more effective to increase the math and bahasa score. However, in term of costeffectiveness the result is mixed. International standard school is more cost-effective in increasing students score in bahasa, while acceleration class is more cost-effective in increasing students score in math subject.

In two studies, this thesis depicts the relationship between minority group status in the United States, perceived discrimination, and coping with stress. Past literature on coping and its types – problem-focused versus emotion-focused – is inconsistent in terms of differences between minority status groups and majority groups. It remains unknown whether or why Black Americans and lesbian or gay Americans may demonstrate coping patterns that differ from White Americans and heterosexual Americans, respectively. What is altogether absent from the literature is the possible mediating factor of perceived discrimination experienced by these minority groups. That is, differences in internal, stable coping processes that manage stress may have been molded by one’s experience with discrimination. Study 1 examines the relationship between race (Black versus White) and coping, mediated by perceived discrimination. Study 2 examines the relationship between sexual orientation (lesbian or gay versus heterosexual) and coping, mediated by perceived discrimination. Both studies confirm the thesis that minority group members exhibit maladaptive, emotion-focused coping more than majority group

members – but that this difference is explained by the minority group members’ perceived discrimination. Historical and political relevance, social implications, and possible limitations in design and interpretation are discussed.

Many people, even devout Muslims, call for the de-Islamisation of the English used by Muslims in private and in public. They say that to be different from the majority society that they live in  their speech mannerism and terminology alienates them from mainstream society. It causes non-Muslims to regard them with prejudice, it disadvantages them when competing for work and it marks them as alien in normal western society.
    This paper argues that, even if Muslims dropped the Arabic Islamic terms inserted into the English they use, English as spoken by Muslims is ‘Islamised’ and that the English words they use translating Islamic Arabic referents denote those referents, not the accepted English Dictionary  definitions of the equivalents, or even their conventional use in western society. It focuses on the words “prayer” and “pray” and comes to the conclusion that, indeed, when Muslims use these terms, they mean “salat”. 
    At the same time, it advocates that Muslims, between themselves, continue to lace their English with the Islamic Arabic terms in obedience to Allah, and switch to standard English vocabulary, if not the standard Englsih referents, only when talking to non-Muslims in their daily life or when propagating the religion or teaching new adherents to the faith. To collect, therefore, such words into a lexical corpus of Islamic English is an urgent project that needs to be undertaken.

In Jim Jarmusch's Int. Trailer. Night (2002) a young American actress, alone in her trailer for a ten-minute break, lights up a cigarette and puts on a CD of the Goldberg Variations. In this short, almost plotless experimental film Bach sounds outside the frameworks that typically motivate the diegetic presence of so-called ‘classical music’ in cinema, detached from the places and signifiers of high art and from high-level meanings and pointed occurrences. This unusual representation of listening opens up two complementary lines of enquiry: first, into the way in which Jarmusch draws on Bach to invent a reality that is strange and irreducible, marked by unexpected cultural affiliations and by an elusive affective realm; second, into the way in which, by thus channelling Bach into his poetics of the everyday, the director reinvents the music's own identity, putting forward a de-essentialized image of its cultural placement and aesthetic status.

The author conducted a comprehensive study of the everyday life of the higher pedagogical schools’ staffs in 1953-1964 based on a wide range of published literature and archival documents. The thesis solves issue of the evolution of life conditions of students and teachers along with the description of logistical base changing. The analysis of teachers’ wealth and purchasing power is also shown in the research. There is also given the characteristic of everyday religious and deviant
behavior motives of educators as well as the characteristics of leisure-time. The work describes the changing attitude of the higher schools staffs towards the reforms in education. Monograph shows the place for students and teachers in the process of growing connections of society with farming and agriculture. The characteristic of the language ituation in higher educational school during the days of the “thaw” is also described.

The main sources for my article are the files concerning dispensations for mixed marriages held in the Archive of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (the Holy Office). My article analyses the tension between two Roman Catholic attitudes toward Catholic women in mixed marriages: the hope that they would serve a missionary role, on the one hand, and the fear that they would succumb to heresy, on the other. Debates within the Holy Office over granting these dispensations show that both conceptions had ancient roots, the first going back to the Roman era, the second to the twelfth century, and then particularly emphasised after the Council of Trent. Studies of mixed marriages in Protestant end Orthodox regions suggest many similarities to the Catholic policies examined here, both regarding the woman’s missionary function and especially regarding the risk of the woman’s apostasy and the meth-ods developed to avoid this.

It argues that this can be a moment when parents are considering their own attitudes to, and shaping their children's experiences of, multiculture. Multiculture is taken as the everyday experience of living with difference. The paper argues that multiculture needs to be understood as shaped not only by racialized, ethnic or religious difference (as it is commonly understood) but also by other differences which parents may consider important, particularly class and approaches to parenting. We stress the need to examine what parents say about schooling in the context in which they are talking, which is shaped by local areas and the experiences of their children in primary schools. This article explores the relationship between the construction of difference and the making of exclusion in the club culture economy. Based on ethnographic research in Manchester, it argues that the cultural practices of the consumers of a local cultural economy need to be viewed together with the practices of its producers in order to understand the interrelation of cultural differentiation and exclusion, which affects both groups. A discussion of the terms ‘underground’ and ‘underclass’, and their particular evocation in the cultural context highlights the interrelationship of social contexts, differentiation and exclusion in the cultural work realm. In conclusion, the article argues in favour of a consideration of these contexts and particularly of the inscription of ‘difference’ in research on work in the cultural industries.

In this chapter David Mabb’s exhibition Art into Everyday Life, held at the Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania in 2006 is discussed. For the exhibition, five paintings were produced, three of which were made into carpets. They depicted images of modernist Soviet era buildings in Vilnius, intertwined with William Morris designs.

A question associated with the introduction of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is whether all participants profit equally from working in CSCL environments. This article reports on a review study into gender-related differences in participation in CSCL. As many of the processes in CSCL are similar to those in computer-mediated communication (CMC), studies into CMC are also included in the review. Male dominance is found to play a role in many CMC settings. A learning culture with an explicit focus on participation by all students seems to be related to a more gender-balanced participation in CMC, however. A tendency for boys to be more active participants than girls is also present in CSCL environments, but it is less pronounced than in CMC. This may be explained by the fact that participation is explicitly promoted in most CSCL environments. Gender differences in the character of students' contributions are found in both CMC and CSCL. It is concluded that in order to avoid gender-stereotyped participation and communication patterns, it is necessary to explicitly address inclusiveness as an aspect of a collaborative classroom culture. A plea is made for further research into differential participation by students in CSCL, and the effects thereof on cognitive and affective learning outcomes. Research should also focus on the question how classroom cultures can be promoted that support active participation of all students aimed at collaborative knowledge construction.

In Sydney, changing international migration patterns and the rise of apartment living means people of different cultural backgrounds are regularly interacting with each other inside their high-density buildings. And it’s not without its problems.
In 2016, it was estimated that around 55 per cent of the world's population now lived in cities. By 2030, urban areas are projected to house 60 per cent of the world’s population. While migration and compact city policies are rarely seen as intersecting by policy makers, cultural difference and living in close proximity to each other can compound the tensions that already exist in apartment buildings and society more broadly.
These tensions could be about shoes being left in common areas, or washing hung on balconies, or 'offensive' cooking smells wafting beyond the kitchen walls and down the halls. These tensions are connected to the gradual shift away from migrants from countries such as the UK and the increase in migrants from countries such as China and India.
Today we’re talking to Chris Ho from the University of Technology and Edgar Liu from the University of New South Wales, about how high density living and cultural diversity are changing the way we live in Australian cities. And when it comes to intercultural relations, little attention has been given to what’s happening inside the apartments building of our cities.

Este articulo busca profundizar en la construcción del espacio privado de migrantes peruanas en Santiago, a través del análisis de las posesiones del hogar y prácticas cotidianas. Los resultados muestran que las formas de habitar el hogar se relacionan con sus procesos de integración, pues a través de la cultura material se negocia cotidianamente la pertenencia a dos mundos, el de origen
y destino, y tanto el ocupante como el hogar en sí mismo se moldean mutuamente. Si bien su entorno material refleja una pertenencia dual, encarnando una memoria e integrando nuevas tecnologías, sus prácticas cotidianas reactualizan sus vínculos originarios y reproducen su cultura, transformando el hogar en un espacio transnacional. De esta manera, en la construcción de hogar ambos mundos cohabitan, permitiéndoles negociar y localizar múltiples pertenencias culturales que posibilitan sus procesos de inserción.
