Construction Method

Two trial piles were installed at the berm section of an embankment in the later stage of its construction and one of them was fitted with an oversized casing to isolate its top 3. m from the action of surrounding soil. Lateral bending behaviour these two piles subjected to passive sub soil movements were very different from each other because of the casing and is modelled in this paper using a three dimensional analysis. The effect of relative stiffness of the piles on their lateral bending behaviour is investigated. The effect of interface joint slip on the pile's behaviour is also investigated in a later section of this paper. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

This research was carried out to study the characteristics of bamboo leaf ash stabilization on lateritic soil in highway construction. Preliminary tests were performed on three samples, A, B, and C for identification and classification purposes followed by the consistency limit tests. Geotechnical property tests (compaction, California bearing ratio (CBR), and triaxial) were also performed on the samples, both at the stabilized and unstabilized states by adding 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% bamboo leaf ash (BLA) by weight of sample to the soils. The results showed that the addition of BLA improved the strengths of the samples. Optimum moisture contents reduced to 20.20, 19.60 and 9.32% at 8, 4 and 6% BLA additions in samples A, B and C respectively while MDD increased to 1400, 1676 and 1941 kg/m 3 respectively at 8, 2 and 4% BLA additions in samples A, B, and C. The unsoaked CBR values of samples A and B increased from 5.44 to 38.21% and from 11.42 to 34.99% respectively. The shear strengths of samples A and B also increased from 181.31 to 199.00 kN/m 2 and from 144.81 to 155.90 kN/m 2 respectively. It was therefore concluded that bamboo leaf ash has a good potential for stabilizing lateritic soils in highway construction.

In this paper, a practical construction method is proposed for polar codes over binary-input channels. Unlike the existing construction methods, we use a Bhattacharyya parameter bound to select the bit-channels over which the information bits are transmitted. We first derive the expression of the Bhattacharyya parameter bound, and introduce a method to achieve its exact value. Then, we present our construction method for different binary-input channels. Numerical results show that, the achievable rate of our method approaches the theoretical value, and its performance is better than that of some existing methods, while the complexity is O , which indicates its effectiveness.
