African comics

Nsé Ramón Esono Ebalé, conosciuto con lo pseudonimo Jamón y Queso, è un artista, fumettista e attivista per i diritti umani della Guinea Equatoriale.
Formatosi da autodidatta, si è fatto conoscere in patria per le coraggiose e pungenti denunce, comunicate soprattutto attraverso il fumetto, dei crimini di Teodoro Obiang Nguema, che dal colpo di stato del 1979 domina il Paese. Trasferitosi in Paraguay e successivamente a El Salvador ha ottenuto riconoscimenti a livello internazionale sia nell’ambito delle arti visive sia in quello del fumetto.
L’intervento si propone di analizzare il percorso artistico di questo autore secondo la sociologia dei campi letterari (Pierre Bourdieu) e il concetto di istituzione della letteratura (Jacques Dubois), attingendo in particolare agli spunti derivati dall’applicazione di questi strumenti teorici ai campi africani così come è stata condotta da Pierre Halen. I concetti di strategia, habitus e capitale (culturale, sociale, simbolico) consentono di identificare e interpretare le scelte artistiche, editoriali e comunicative che questo autore ha effettuato nella costruzione del suo capitale simbolico.

In the comic book Congo 50, issued in 2010 by Roularta Books and Africalia to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Independence of Congo, eight comic artists of the association BD Kin Label tell the history of the 50 years of independence of their country, under the supervision of the French scriptwriter Alain Brezault and the art direction of Congolese comic author Asimba Bathy.
The development of ideas and the process of creating the album are digitally archived, and are based on the research of balance between the roles and the workloads of the various project contributors.
This collaborative publication could be considered as a typical example of the artwork produced by African comic authors in that cultural products often come from the “South” due to the solicitation of institutional commands from the “North”.

This interview has been conducted as part of PhD research focusing on the production and reception of comics by African authors and individual success stories at a European level in the French language. Thanks to publications with French publishers and collaborations with European associations and institutions, Fati Kabuika enjoyed the unusual achievement among young Congolese authors of having “temporary” recognition in Europe, even living for a time in Kinshasa. In the interview he talks about success, expectations, mobility, but also about insurmountable thresholds.
