A research proposal is a serious statement that addresses a researcher’s intent to conduct a study on a phenomenon and a plan about how to perform the research. Students usually undertake research under the guidance of a supervisor from faculty in tandem with assistance and supervision of other faculty members. Thus, the proposal should be a clear statement of intent that aims at elucidating the plan of research to make it feasible and acceptable for all parties concerned. The most essential characteristic of a research proposal is that it should be sufficient to present the researcher’s idea or question and expected outcomes with clarity and definition (the what). It should also make a case for the reason the researcher’s focus of study is significant and the value that it will bring to the discipline under study (the why).

Most students and beginning researchers do not fully understand what a research proposal means, nor do they understand its importance. To put it bluntly, one's research is only as a good as one's proposal. An ill--conceived proposal dooms the project even if it somehow gets through the Thesis Supervisory Committee. This article sets out and discusses the stages in writing an effective research proposal. It covers the when, why and how to aspects of research proposals, and uses examples to illustrate the most effective way to communicate research ideas. It is, in part, designed to support those seeking to submit a proposal for the LIRG Research award, and thus to complement the advice given on the LIRG website, but it also serves as general guidance for anyone wishing to prepare a research proposal for a range of contexts.

The abstract is a brief summary of the entire proposal, typically ranging from 150 to 250 words.

The purpose of this handout is not to teach you how to design a research project. Rather it is to help you translate your research plans into an effective research proposal. A well-written proposal will ease the process of obtaining institutional and ethical approval and will increase your chances of obtaining funding for your project.

During the remarkable excavations at Hasanlu, in northwestern Iran, thousands of metal objects were discovered, but few have been systematically studied. The goal of this study is to present a catalogue of the metal quivers found by the Joint Expedition to Hasanlu (1956-1977), led by Robert H. Dyson of the University of Pennsylvania Museum. After a brief introduction concerning the site and the evidence for metal quivers in the Ancient Near East as a whole, the examples discovered at Hasanlu will be presented and analyzed within their archaeological contexts.
