Extended cognition theorists argue that cognitive processes constitutively depend on resources that are neither organically composed, nor located inside the bodily boundaries of the agent, provided certain conditions on the integration of those processes into the agent's cognitive architecture are met. Epistemologists, however, worry that in so far as such cognitively integrated processes are epistemically relevant, agents could thus come to enjoy an untoward explosion of knowledge. This paper develops and defends an approach to cognitive integration-cluster-model functionalism-which finds application in both domains of inquiry, and which meets the challenge posed by putative cases of cognitive or epistemic bloat.

In light of the pervasive developments of new technologies, such as NBIC (Nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and cognitive science), it is imperative to produce a coherent and deep reflexion on the human nature, on human intelligence and on the limit of both of them, in order to successfully respond to some technical argumentations that strive to depict humanity as a purely mechanical system. For this purpose, it is interesting to refer to the epistemology and metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas as a stable philosophical reference on Human Nature. Indeed, we find in the works of Aquinas some of the most productive elements that could form a base to our deeper understanding of, and possibly even solutions to some of the most perplexing questions raised in our times by the existence of AI.

This chapter examines monastic writings of the fourth- and fifth-century, produced in and about the ascetic milieus of Egypt’s deserts. The topic I focus on is the significance of ageing in that literature. First, I discuss the perception of Christian discipleship as continuous personal growth that culminates in the wisdom of the „beautiful elder”. Contemplating this trajectory, novices learn from their elders by observing their behaviour, by listening to their wisdom, and by obeying their advice. Second, I address Christian discipleship in terms of novices attending to the needs of the elders. Thus, the elders represent both role models and objects of care. In this light, discipleship, in desert literature, means learning wisdom from genuine examples of holy life and taking care of the elders.

Resumen: A pesar de ser Chile el país más pacífico de la región, y de que la tasa de victimización ha tenido un descenso constante, ciertos datos, de ser analizados con un marco teórico más complejo, pueden dar señas de la existencia de un problema mayor incubándose fuera de la atención del gobierno. Este desbarajuste entre realidad y teoría impide que el Estado pueda disponer de una lectura completa del escenario nacional, con lo que sus políticas y estrategias se ven afectadas. Esta situación es posible de subsanar al complicar el marco teórico utilizado con el objetivo de dejar de ver al crimen organizado solamente como organismos criminales participantes de mercados ilícitos a través de los conceptos de ciudad asilvestrada, insurgencia criminal, trinidad criminal y el modelo de las generaciones de pandillas y evolución de carteles de drogas.
