This chapter introduces simulation tool TRANSSIM (Transportation model Simulation) to simulate transportation models. TRANSSIM is a tool which simulates and compares the results of different transportation models. A combination of programming languages is used to design this tool and is based on analytical approach to guide optimization strategy. In TRANSSIM, inputs are provided in terms of resources available, requirement and cost associated. Output performance measurements are calculated in terms of product allocation and associated total cost.

Transportation simulation model development allows simulating traveller’s decisions, evaluating various transportation management strategies and complex solutions. The aim of the paper is to set the general principles of the transportation simulation model development and validation. The paper contains the overview of the transportation simulation models types with the examples from the conducted projects for the Riga city. The basic steps of the simulation model development procedure: initial data preparation and analysis, transportation model development and simulation, scenarios planning and evaluation, and simulation models outcomes evaluation are considered. Simulation model verification, validation and calibration definitions are given. The basic checks for the transportation macroscopic and microscopic simulation model validation are listed. A summary of the transportation simulation model validation and calibration methods and parameters is given.

Simulation applications help decision makers to give right decisions to eliminate some problems such as: create a new firm, need some changes inside a factory; improve the process of a hospital etc. In this engineering simulation study, there are two points which are used by students to arrive at the University. Initial point is the train station and the final point is the arrival point. Students' transportation is provided with buses. The main problem is to decide the number of buses by taking number of student into consideration. To be able to solve this real-life application PROMODEL pack software is used.

This article presents a new simulation-based meta-model to support logistics providers in sizing transhipment systems. The meta-model is made up of: a user interface with database (where system elements and their parameters are specified); a library of objects (which represent all the elements of the system) and a software application to automatically build the simulation model of the system. The proposed meta-modelthrough a unique toolallows service providers to design transhipment systems for various environments, whenever the experience from previous projects is often helpless. The suggested approach has been successfully used in two case-studies: an effective cost analysis has been carried out, by taking into account the expected effects on both revenues and investments; and the robustness of each system's configuration has been tested by analysing its performance under different levels of various sources of variance.

This paper addresses problem solving and complex decision making in the management of transportation operations under environmental dynamics through the use of models and scenarios. A system dynamics simulation was used to model and analyze the efficiency of transportation systems as a tool for decision support to improve efficiency. Transportation systems are complex because they involve a number of different stakeholders, resulting in feedback with different time lags between the responses of all entities. Data and information were collected from the Transportation Department of Surabaya city. Several scenarios to improve the efficiency of transportation systems were developed by modifying the structure and parameters of the model. Several factors influence the efficiency of transportation system: traffic network, conventional roadway, accessibility based transport planning, multi modal transport, planning efficiency, and resources efficient modes (economic category). By implement...
Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2016
After several decades of advances, simulation has become an important tool in the modeling of transportation systems and is widely applied in practice. Guides have been created by organizations in several countries, and dozens of papers have been published in scientific journals on the theory and application of transport simulation; these works are aimed at guiding practitioners in the use of simulation tools. However, transport simulation still lacks a unified and comprehensive guide for use in practice. The lack of such a document leads to conflicts between modelers, agencies, and decision makers and allows inappropriate use of the models. The outcome is often inaccurate results, inefficient use of resources, and conflict. This paper reviews and analyzes the existing transportation simulation guides. It identifies gaps and limitations and proposes an outline for a comprehensive simulation manual that is based on stakeholder input. Review of the existing guidance documents reveals ...
Mathematical Problems in Engineering, 2013
A logistics network consists of suppliers, manufacturing centers, warehouses, distribution centers, and retail outlets as well as channels for the flow of raw materials, work-in-process inventory, and finished products between the facilities . In many cases, the problems of each logistics functions are treated as isolated functions. There are: network design; information flow; transportation; inventory; and warehousing, material handling, and packaging. Whereas, the basis of performance improvement in integrated logistics network is total cost analysis. That is minimizing the total cost of transportation, warehousing, order processing and information, lot quantity, and inventory carrying cost. In this paper, We consider an integrated logistics problem in minimizing the total logistics cost and provide model for logistics network optimization in form of a mathematical programming model. An integrated model of logistics network minimizes total physical distribution costs by simultaneously determining optimal plants and warehouse locations, flows in the resulting network, shipment compositions and shipment frequencies in the network using heuristics methodology. The objective is to optimize the production and distribution plan so as to minimize its total logistics cost.
