Sumanene is typical representative of molecular bowls, also known as buckybowls or πbowls, which has three sp3 hybridized carbon atoms at the benzylic positions as characteristic structural feature. This specific structural property may allow functionalization of new bowl shaped structure. In this work we investigated effects of substitution of carbon atoms of sumanene with boron and nitrogen atoms within DFT computations. We used quantum molecular descriptors in order to better understand sumanene molecule and the effects of substitution. Isomers obtained by substitution were further subjected to the study of NMR parameters, NICS, bowltobowl inversion barrier, NBO/NPA analysis and DOS analysis.
The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of polyhydroxylated fullerene derivative, fullerenol C60(OH)24 nano particles (FNP), on mycelial growth and spore germination of model organism, filamentous fungus, Aspergillus niger. The effect of FNP was tested using microdilution method and spore germination assay. Here, we reported inhibitory effect of FNP on spore germination relative to the FNP concentration, as well as influence on morphophysiological characteristics of conidiogenus apparatus of A. niger. The most significant result is the depigmentation of the melanized conidial apparatus, since the melanin is the virulence factor in human pathogenic fungi.

Background: Lachesis muta rhombeata (Lmr) is the largest venomous snake in Latin America and its venom contains mainly enzymatic components, such as serine and metalloproteases, L-amino acid oxidase and phospholipases A 2. Metalloproteases comprise a large group of zinc-dependent proteases that cleave basement membrane components such as fibronectin, laminin and collagen type IV. These enzymes are responsible for local and systemic changes, including haemorrhage, myonecrosis and inflammation. This study aimed the isolation and enzymatic characterization of the first metalloprotease (Lmr-MP) from Lmr venom (LmrV). Methods and results: Lmr-MP was purified through two chromatographic steps and submitted to enzymatic characterization. It showed proteolytic activity on azocasein with maximum activity at pH 7.0-9.0. It was inhibited by EDTA (a metal chelator that removes zinc, which is essential for enzymatic activity) and no effect was observed with PMSF, iodoacetic acid or pepstatin (inhibitors of serine, cysteine and aspartyl proteases, respectively). Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ and Ba 2+ ions increased its activity, while Al 3+ , Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ and Zn 2+ inhibited it. Additionally, ZnCl 2 showed a dose dependent inhibition of the enzyme. Lmr-MP activity was also evaluated upon chromogenic substrates for plasma kallikrein (S-2302), plasmin and streptokinase-activated plasminogen (S-2251) and Factor Xa (S-2222) showing the highest activity on S-2302. The activity in different solutions (5 mM or 50 mM ammonium bicarbonate, pH 7.8; 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid + 50% acetonitrile; phosphate buffer saline, pH 7.4; 50 mM sodium acetate, pH 4.0 or ammonium acetate pH 4.5) was also evaluated and the results showed that its activity was abolished at acidic pHs. Its molecular mass (22,858 Da) was determined by MALDI-TOF and about 90% of its primary structure was verified by high-resolution mass spectrometry using HCD and ETD fragmentations and database search against the sequence of closely related species. It is a novel enzyme which shared high identity with other snake venom metalloproteases (svMPs) belonging to the P-I group. Conclusion: The purification procedure achieved a novel pure highly active metalloprotease from LmrV. This new molecule can help to understand the metalloproteases mechanisms of action, the Lachesis envenoming, as well as to open new perspectives for its use as therapeutic tools.

Vortex–Rossby waves (VRWs) and inertial gravity waves (IGWs) have been proposed to explain the propagation of spiral rainbands and the development of dynamical instability in tropical cyclones (TCs). In this study, a theory for mixed vortex–Rossby–inertia–gravity waves (VRIGWs), together with VRWs and IGWs, is developed by including both rotational and divergent flows in a shallow-water equations model. A cloud-resolving TC simulation is used to help simplify the radial structure equation for linearized perturbations and then transform it to a Bessel equation with constant coefficients. A cubic frequency equation describing the three groups of allowable (radially discrete) waves is eventually obtained. It is shown that low-frequency VRWs and high-frequency IGWs may coexist, but with separable dispersion characteristics, in the eye and outer regions of TCs, whereas mixed VRIGWs with inseparable dispersion and wave instability properties tend to occur in the eyewall. The crystal structure of l-serine has been determined at room temperature at pressures between 0.3 and 4.8 GPa. The structure of this phase (hereafter termed l-serine-I), which consists of the molecules in their zwitterionic tautomer, is orthorhombic, space group P2 1 2 1 2 1 . The least compressible cell dimension (c), corresponds to chains of head-to-tail NHÁ Á Ácarboxylate hydrogen bonds. The most compressible direction is along b, and the pressure-induced distortion in this direction takes the form of closing up voids in the middle of Rtype hydrogen-bonded ring motifs. This occurs by a change in the geometry of hydrogen-bonded chains connecting the hydroxyl groups of the ÐCH 2 OH side chains. These hydrogen bonds are the longest conventional hydrogen bonds in the system at ambient pressure, having an OÁ Á ÁO separation of 2.918 (4) A Ê and an OÁ Á ÁOÁ Á ÁO angle of 148.5 (2) ; at 4.8 GPa these parameters are 2.781 (11) and 158.5 (7) . Elsewhere in the structure one NHÁ Á ÁO interaction reaches an NÁ Á ÁO separation of 2.691 (13) A Ê at 4.8 GPa. This is amongst the shortest of this type of interaction to have been observed in an amino acid crystal structure. Above 4.8 GPa the structure undergoes a single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transition to a hitherto uncharacterized polymorph, which we designate lserine-II. The OHÁ Á ÁOH hydrogen-bonded chains of l-serine-I are replaced in l-serine-II by shorter OHÁ Á Ácarboxyl interactions, which have an OÁ Á ÁO separation of 2.62 (2) A Ê . This phase transition occurs via a change from a gauche to an anti conformation of the OH group, and a change in the NC CO torsion angle from À178.1 (2) at 4.8 GPa to À156.3 (10) at 5.4 GPa. Thus, the same topology appears in both crystal forms, which explains why it occurs from one single-crystal form to another. The transition to l-serine-II is also characterized by the closing-up of voids which occur in the centres of other R-type motifs elsewhere in the structure. There is a marked increase in CHÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonding in both phases relative to l-serine-I at ambient pressure.
