This paper addresses the performance of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in a wireless mesh network. The aim is to assess under which conditions the protocol's performance might be acceptable, in particular for delay sensitive traffic. A number of different scenarios is considered, with varying number of gateways, different sizes for the group of users, as well as different transmission and carrier sensing ranges. It is shown that the IEEE 802.11 performs poorly on heavy traffic, in particular for data flows subject to multiple hops. In addition, the protocol fails to dispense the available bandwidth fairly to the requesting nodes. Improvements can be obtained by minimizing the number of hops required for the traffic to reach its destination. This can be achieved by increasing the number of gateways. Another alternative is to increase the transmission range, at the cost of spatial reuse. However, the latter option only translates into better performance if the carrier sense range is also decreased.

The 802.11 MAC protocol is widely used in wireless mesh networks. However, with multi-hop transmissions prevalent in such networks, neither the current 802.11 DCF basic scheme nor the RTS/CTS scheme can achieve full utilization of network capacity for various reasons. First, the 802.11 MAC provides low spatial reuse (low parallelism of transmissions). Second, the collision avoidance mechanism in 802.11 becomes less effective for multi-hop scenarios. In this article, we review two types of 802.11-based MAC enhancements to improve the efficiency and effectiveness in wireless mesh networks. One class of schemes focus on tuning transmission power and carrier sense threshold. In static strategies, the interference model is introduced and a static optimal strategy is derived for the worst case scenarios. In dynamic strategies, transmission power and carrier sensing threshold are tuned adaptively to various network conditions and access patterns. Another class of schemes exploit the channel-state diversity among the receivers of a specific sender by scheduling the frames based on the receivers' conditions.

The wireless mesh network (WMN) has been an emerging technology in recent years. Because the transmission medium used in networking backhaul access points (APs) is radio, the wireless mesh network is not only easy and cost effective in deployment, but also has good scalability in coverage area and capacity. This paper provides an overview of distributed medium access control (MAC) protocols, discusses their features and suitability for WMNs and identifies potential challenges and open research issues. Specifically, we overview the technical medium access control of the new standard for WMNs, the mesh deployments of the IEEE 802.16 MAC and we focus on the coordinated distributed scheduling (CDS) scheme of this. Moreover, we assess the fitness of the IEEE 802.11 over wireless mesh networks. Through the study of existing solutions, we analyze the previous work and sketch the contours of the directions to achieve the throughput and the latency that must be guaranteed in WMNs. In this context we suggest future enhancements to the standard that could increase throughput, while also increase the robustness, without complexity increases and propose and evaluate a new distributed scheduling scheme (DSS). We compared the CDS and the DSS and simulations studies document and confirm the positive characteristics of the proposed scheme. Furthermore, we proposed an analytical model to assess a lower bound in terms of delay.

A promising solution for wireless environments is the wireless mesh technology that envisages supplementing wired infrastructure with a wireless backbone for providing Internet connectivity to mobile nodes (MNs) or users in residential areas and offices. The IEEE 802.11 TGs has started to work in developing a mesh standard for local area wireless networks. Although a lot of progress has been made and a few new drafts have been released recently, there exist many issues that demand enhanced or even new solutions to 802.11s mesh networking. This paper aims to overview the latest version of the IEEE 802.11s protocol (Draft 2.02), especially the MAC and routing layers, and to point out the challenges that these networks have to overcome in these layers.

To support the mobility and low cost deployment, the wireless technology is being used for number of applications. Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) is one of the evolving technology to provide un-disrupted data connectivity to mobile users. It provides high bandwidth through efficient resource sharing, specially for areas deprived of wired connectivity. These networks also offer self-configuring, self-healing and self organizing capabilities. IEEE 802.11s is a MAC standard being proposed as an enhancement for WMN. This standard includes the use of a mandatory routing protocol at MAC layer, known as Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol (HWMP). However, HWMP offers weak response to congestion, especially for interactive applications. IEEE 802.11s has also proposed sharing of Congestion Control Notification Frame(CCNF) on reaching congestion threshold. In this research paper, we have proposed a congestion avoidance technique named Congestion Avoidance Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol (CA-HWMP). The proposed technique offers localized re-routing based upon congestion threshold, with minimal overheads. The re-routing decision is taken by the each node using CCNF received from the next hop neighbor. The proposed algorithm do not add any overhead as the CCNF is already the design part of 802.11s. This paper also shows comparison of proposed technique against HWMP under NS3 for the validation of proposed idea. From the comparison we concluded that use of CA-HWMP as replacement of HWMP significantly improves the performance of IEEE 802.11s.
Globally shadow banking has increased significantly in the recent years. Although in the developed economies such as the US, shadow banks are quite complex and play a bigger role, it is increasing rapidly in the emerging economies as well. There are now increasing concerns on the rise of shadow banking, especially in China and India. In this study we attempt to understand the differences in trends in two major emerging economies, China and India, and also look at the reasons behind its rise in the two countries. Our findings show financial exclusion is one of the major reasons for the rise of shadow banking in the two countries. Among differences are financially repressive policies in China in contrast to financial reforms in India leading to the rise of shadow banking. Recent rapid rise of NBFCs in India, which are dependent on short term borrowings including bank borrowings, is a cause of concern as despite heightened regulatory measures, they are still not at par with banks' supervision and regulations.
