An expository overview of the problems and prospects of “Statistical Education in Nigeria ” is presented. The paper examines the extent of statistical education at the elementary (primary), secondary, intermediate and tertiary levels, in terms of scope and depth. Reasons for the low level of statistical education in Nigeria are explored. In particular, the issue of the availability of requisite manpower for statistical education, as well as the effect of fast changing technologies on the teaching and learning of statistics, are examined. The paper concludes with a number of suggestions on how to improve and sustain statistical education in Nigeria.

Statistics Education is a new discipline whose popularity has not been widely appreciated in Nigeria and some developing countries of Africa. There is still a large gap with the advanced levels of statistics education in more developed countries. In this paper, we enumerate the importance of statistics, identify some existing problems in statistics education in Nigeria and make some proposals as to how they may be overcome. Result of our empirical survey on the current awareness of the discipline in Nigeria using one of Nigeria's foremost Universities as a case study shows that majority of the respondents agreed that Statistics Education should exist as a separate discipline in Nigerian Universities. We elicit that this research will enhance the development of statistics education in Nigeria, and encourage statistics educators and researchers to help address some important issues raised in this study.

The term statistics can have different meaning to the; academia and official statisticians (economists, politicians, governments and the general public). While most of the academia, from one end, view statistics as a very rich mathematical game, the official statistician on the other end view statistics as information. This diversity has brought problems on deciding what to teach to who, where, and for what purposes. On the part of the academia, no one is allowed to pursue a statistics course if he has a bad mathematical background. For the part of the official statistics, it is emphasised that statistical knowledge is important to all people irrespective of one’s mathematical background. This paper looks at the education system of the country to find out the type of statistics that is taught at different levels in relation to the expected learning outcomes at end. The levels that are looked at are; Primary Schools Education, Ordinary Secondary School Education, Advanced Secondary S...

This paper describes the current state of teaching statistics in Ugandan schools at different levels. Different emphasis is placed on teaching statistics at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Official documents on curricula and examination make explicit statements on what statistical ideas and techniques are to be taught in schools and suggest useful skills and capabilities that school graduates should acquire, but little of the qualities are visible on the ground. There is little emphasis on the application of these techniques in the context of real life problems. Various challenges on the teaching of mathematics and statistics in schools and the school-university transition are identified, which include the curricula, the teaching force, and the nature of the students and the shortage of teaching resources. These challenges maybe addressed through synchronising students with varied mathematics school backgrounds in their study of statistics, policy adjustments and continuous professional development.

The Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS; National Universities Commission, 2014) is a gauge for the quality of academic programmes taught in Nigerian universities. This study analyzed published administrative data and survey data that covered personnel, physical facilities, equipment, and library and information support systems. Results show that the mix of academic staff in statistics was 20% Professors/Readers, 21% Senior Lecturers, and 59% Lecturers compared with the proposed BMAS mix of 20%, 35%, and 45%, respectively. The survey among 29 universities showed that internet access was available for education support services, and 55% of the universities adopted a 6month industrial training as stipulated by the regulatory body. There is an urgent need to revise the BMAS and to engage senior personnel with improving the quality of statistical training.

This study investigated the extent certain demographic variables determine the level of statistical l iteracy among postgraduate students at the University of Port Harcourt. The demographic variables considered included gender, academic level and subject discipline. Three research questions and their corresponding null h ypotheses guided the study. The study adopted the ex post facto research design using a sample of 365 graduate students drawn through stratified random sampling technique. Data for the study was collected using an adapte d Wade (2009) Statistics Literacy Questionnaire, validated by experts in measurement and evaluation. The instr ument was shown to possess suitable reliability of 0.78 using Cronbach Alpha technique. Data analysis was don e using mean and standard deviation for the research questions, while independent t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the hypotheses. Results revealed that male students had a significantly higher level of stati stical literacy than female students, doctoral students had the highest level of statistical literacy in terms of acad emic level, while science students had the highest reported level of statistical literacy. On the basis of the results Obtained, recommendations were made

This study investigates the role of biophilic design in addressing environmental issues within the built environment and its contribution to the goals of sustainable architecture. A mixed-method approach comprised a literature review to identify key elements of biophilic design, an online survey with 378 participants from academia and professional fields and focus group interviews with 13 experts. The Relative Importance Index (RII) and thematic analysis were utilized to evaluate the significance of the identified biophilic factors. The study revealed six principal objectives of sustainable architecture and elucidated how biophilic design contributes to these goals through five direct and three indirect benefits. The findings underscore the potential of biophilic design to enhance sustainability in the built environment, particularly in Nigeria. Biophilic design emerges as a valuable strategy in sustainable architecture, promoting human-nature connections and offering tangible benefits. The study highlights the importance of integrating biophilic principles into architectural planning to address environmental challenges effectively.
