The National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC) holds the largest public collection of works by Mark Rothko (1903-70), comprising more than 1,100 paintings on canvas and works on paper. Early in his career, between 1930 and 1945, Rothko used colored construction paper supports as the backdrop to his expressive techniques of layering and mixing transparent and opaque water-based paints. He depicted interior figure scenes as well as various outdoor locations with topographically interesting passages ranging from smooth, dilute washes to stiffly applied geometric strokes. Rothko's experimentation with tonal gradations and reticulation and bleed patterns arguably stands as a precursor to his mature Color-field works. The materials used in these important, early works are unfortunately susceptible to light-induced fading and structural insecurity. Microfade testing was implemented to determine the lightfastness of the construction paper supports and water-based paints Rothko used, as well as relevant, historical papers from the Paper Sample Collection of the National Gallery of Art. His palette was also non-invasively documented with reflectance imaging spectroscopy (RIS) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The technical studies have helped to inform best preservation practices surrounding treatment, storage, and display to ensure future generations' access to these deeply expressive works.

This exhibition, conceived to highlight mono graphic strengths in the collection of the Department of Drawings, focuses on four artists who worked more or less contempora neously, yet whose artistic output and stylistic development remained distinct. George Grosz, Kurt Schwitters, Max Ernst, and Paul Klee were all active in different parts of Germany from the 19 10s through the 1930s (Ernst would relocate to Paris in 1922). Each was influenced by different aspects of Dada and became disaffected with traditional art forms, a disillusionment prompted by the political and social upheaval following World War I. The Museum owns twenty-two drawings by Grosz, thirty-nine by Schwitters, seventeen by Ernst, and forty-four by Klee. This selection show cases the depth and breadth of these holdings.
