People depend on functioning ecosystems, which provide benefits that support human existence and wellbeing. The relationship between people and nature has been experienced and conceptualized in multiple ways. Recently, ecosystem services (ES) concepts have permeated science, government policies, multi-national environmental agreements, and science-policy interfaces. In 2017, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) introduced a new and closely related concept -Nature's Contributions to People (NCP). The introduction of NCP has sparked some lively discussion and confusion about the distinguishing characteristics between ES and NCP. In order to clarify their conceptual relation, we identify eleven specific claims about novel elements from the latest NCP literature and analyze how far ES research has already contributed to these corresponding conceptual claims in the existing ES literature. We find a mixed-picture, where on six specific conceptual claims (culture, social sciences and humanities, indigenous and local knowledge, negative contributions of nature, generalizing perspective, non-instrumental values and valuation) NCP does not differ greatly from past ES research, but we also find five conceptual claims (diverse worldviews, contextspecific perspective, relational values, fuzzy and fluid reporting categories and groups, inclusive language and framing) where NCP provides novel conceptualizations of people and nature relations.

Assessments of the value of nature (e.g., TEEB. The economics of ecosystems and biodiversity: ecological and economic foundations, London, 2010) have tended to focus on the instrumental values of ecosystem services. However, recent academic and policy debate have highlighted a wider range of values (e.g., relational and intrinsic values), valuation methods (e.g., socio-cultural methods), and worldviews [e.g., indigenous and local knowledge (ILK) systems]. To account for these new perspectives, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has developed the concept of 'Nature's contributions to people' (NCP), which aims to be a more inclusive approach to understanding and accounting for the diversity of values held by different stakeholders. In this paper, we aim to critically appraise the merits of the IPBES conceptual framework by reviewing of the findings the IPBES Europe and Central Asia (ECA) assessment. Our objectives are: (1) To review and assess the instrumental and relational values of NCP in Europe and Central Asia? (2) To consider what additional insights into the value of NCP are gained through the inclusion of socio-cultural valuations and ILK? Our analysis demonstrates that the ECA assessment captures a wide range of instrumental and relational values of NCP; however, we acknowledge variation in the availability of this value evidence. We also highlight new insights that can be uncovered through the adoptions of socio-cultural valuation methods and analysis of ILK knowledge. We conclude that the NCP paradigm, with its focus on instrumental and relational values, treats values more holistically than previous assessments such as TEEB (2010). For example, by giving a 'voice' to ILK holders, we demonstrated new types of NCP such as carrion removal, along with evidence of relational values including sense of place, identity, symbolic values and sacredness. While the ECA assessments may be defined as an example of a 'Multiple evidence base' approach to valuation of ecosystem assessments, the ECA assessment fails to demonstrate how to incorporate this wider range of values in decision-making processes.

The article examines the significance of history-themed passages (historiae) in Vitruvius' architectural treatise De architectura and assesses their veracity vis-à-vis their rhetorical impact. The article's particular focus lies on Vitruvius' reflections on history, since the sound knowledge of it-as the author claims-is vital for any competent architect. It asserts that Vitruvius tends to stretch the historical truth whenever he makes an attempt at self-promotion (as an author or an architect) or seeks to win the approval of his patron emperor Augustus, to whom he dedicated his work.
s: The Mathematics teachers' ability to connect Mathematics to real life problems is principal to students' interest development in Mathematics. The current study seeks to identify factors that studentsprefer that their Mathematics teacherswould improve on to help build their interest in Mathematics. The study used random sampling technique to select ten (10) high schools and 1,263 students' from the various subject areas to respond to a structured questionnaire on variables that contributes to the students' Mathematics interest building process. The study used principal component analysis together with multiple linear regression analysis to analyze the effect of teachers' ability to connect Mathematics to real life problem on the student interest in Mathematics. The study found that teachers ability to connect Mathematics to real life problem can be put into two principal component and these components significantly (p<0.001) predicts 57.4% students interest in Mathematics. The relative importance index of the factors used for the Mathematics connection to real life problem was computed and assessed.
