Construction activities have made a great breakthrough in the last two decades on the back of an increase in development activities, and public demand. Still, occupational health and safety issues have become a major concern to construction organizations. The world society and economy have suffered financial and human losses as a result of poor safety management in the construction industry. The impact is however more in developing countries. The purpose of this study is to explore major safety provisions and also a detailed study has been conducted on safety management procedures in construction sites. Different types of accidents occurring in construction sites and measures taken to control these accidents are also analyzed in this paper. Data have been collected through various site visits, literature reviews, and various construction safety standards including BIS and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration). The paper has been concluded after putting forward a set of recommendations for construction organizations to improve occupational safety in the construction sites

This review attempts to identify the health hazards, risks and causes of poor safety practices in construction sites. In addition, the differences in safety practices in both developed and developing countries and methods to improve construction site safety are discussed. Effects of some health hazards are chronic while some are acute. Mostly reported acute health hazards are "workers fall from height" and "electric shocks", while mostly reported chronic health hazard is "exposure to hazardous substances". Lack of awareness about site safety and dislike to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) were identified as main causes of poor safety practices in construction sites. One of the major needs with regard to the construction industry is to enhance professionals' interests in active safety management and implementation of awareness programs, which must be developed and implemented among construction workers. Awareness on possible risk factors and knowledge on how to reduce these risk factors among workers and contractors will enhance site safety.
The Indian society and economy have suffered human and financial losses as a result of the poor safety record in the construction industry. The purpose of this study is to examine safety management in the construction industry. The study will collects data from general contractors, who are involved in major types of construction. Collected data include information regarding organizational safety policy, safety training, safety meetings, safety equipment, safety inspections, safety incentives and penalties, workers' attitude towards safety, labor turnover rates and compliance with safety legislation. The study will also reveal several factors of poor safety management. Thus the paper will conclude by providing a set of recommendations and strategies to contractors for improving their safety performance.

The construction industry is globally known as one of the most hazardous workplaces. Companies in the construction sector are undeniably often focused on completing projects on time, which results in tight work schedules and increases the risks of regular construction site activities, especially for the public who lives in the area. Inadequate rules and regulations in public safety and construction sites not practicing the safety practices to protect the public from harm are potential to cause public accidents to happen. Additionally, little improvement in safety practices at the construction sites and lack of awareness in implementing proper safety practices at a construction site could cause the increasing the rate of public accidents too. This study merely aims to explore the safety practices to be implemented at a construction site in a way to prevent public accidents from occurring. In order to achieve the aim, this study has two (2) objectives; 1: to determine the experience i...

The aim of this research is to identify and evaluate the safety management in construction projects to minimise and control health and safety (H&S) of construction workers. Questionnaire is used to collect a wide range of opinions from experienced professionals working in different construction sites for comparison between them. The reviews of the related literature are the first step in obtaining information from previously related studies. The literature reviews provide a theoretical background about safety management that guided the design of the questionnaire. This research concludes that the construction industry has a high number of fatalities and long-term injuries. This is unacceptable in a modern society and it also makes the industry inefficient, with days lost due to injuries. This research shows that the high rates of accidents are due to several common factors, such as poor construction planning, lack of safety in design, inadequate safety training, worker behaviour, inherent safety H&S risk of construction and lack of knowledge of site rules.

Occupational accidents cause important social and economic problems by loss of life and physical injuries. Construction sector involves high risk due to its production processes and labor intensive characteristic and because of occupational accidents the sector brings up against financial loss in large scale. In developing countries, construction sector is one of the most important sectors that have a great contribution to economic development with its employment capacity and added-value to the economy. On the other hand, due to the lack of preventive measures, occupational accidents occur, frequently in construction in Turkey. Major occupational accidents are defined as the cause of serious injuries and a long-term disability; minor occupational accidents are defined as the cause of insignificant injuries and short-term disability. Minor occupational accidents are not considered sufficiently, they are even not kept as a record. It is known that minor occupational accidents, which a...

Risk management is a concept which promote as safety practice in the work place. Many companies often establish a risk management procedure in their projects for improving the performance and increase the profits. Inadequate or the lack of occupational health and safety not only negatively affects the traditional construction project parameters of cost, quality and schedule, but the sustainability of the environment. Occupational fatalities, injuries and disease constitute defects as they are not project requirements. They also contribute to the cost of construction and development as workers' compensation insurance is included as a labour overhead and the cost of accidents is integrated into the cost structure of contractors. Health and safety at construction sites deals with both physical and psychological well-being of workers on construction sites and other persons whose health is likely to be adversely affected by construction activities. It is of primary concern to employers, employees, governments and project participants. Health and safety therefore is an economic as well as humanitarian concern that requires proper management control. Projects undertaken in the construction sector are widely complex and have often significant budgets, and thus reducing risks associated should be a priority for company. This master thesis presents an application of risk management in the early stage of a project life cycle of a construction project. Undertaking survey of safety aspects used in construction site and identify the lack of risk and safety management system to improve them and analysis the result with newly implemented hierarchy of risk control system.

The construction industry is inherently risky, with a substantial number of accidents. Moreover, most construction firms aims at completing projects on time, especially with different projects at hand thereby neglecting the safety aspect of the workers. In most construction companies, adequate concentration is not allocated to the areas of health and safety and this has been a great problem over the years. To support in addressing this issue, this work planned with the aim to recommend measures and strategies for managing safety on construction sites. Data collected was analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and the Relative Importance Index (RII) was also used in grading. It was therefore disclosed from the findings that poor planning at site, unsafe working conditions with others are some of the major causes of accident at site. Construction companies should consider the need for special training for workers and also to create a group of internal health and safety monitory experts were some of the recommendations made.
Safety is an important aspect in relation to construction works. Construction work involves risk of fatal injuries or even death. Safety is a major concern and can be ensured with proper equipments, safety precautions and education about risks involved. Even the country’s government can play significant role by issuing strict rules and regulations to be followed at construction sites. In my view, workers must also be provided with minimum life cover according to their human value. Thus, the research work has been done to ensure the safety of masons, laborers, project managers and everybody related to construction work.

The Indian society have suffered human losses as a result of the poor safety record in the construction industry. The purpose of this study is to examine safety management in the construction industry. The study involves data collection from general contractors and study specifically investigates the safety perceptions, attitudes and behavior of the construction workers towards management safety practices. A questionnaire was develop to collect data from two different construction sites. This study shows that 74.8% of workers are aware about the health and safety. The study will therefore raise awareness towards health and safety measures and will also assist project manager, engineers and other workers at the construction site in carrying out their work with minimum risk.
