The cesspit from the shipyard on Havenstraat (Harbour street), location Galeiwerf (Galley wharf) is the second cesspit to be completely investigated in the town of Vlaardingen. The first published cesspit belonged to the Herberg De Visscher (The Fisherman Inn) and held finds dating from l 770 -1 790. The cesspit from the Havenstraat is earlier in date and for the first time we are able to insights into the daily life and dietary patterns of the Vlaardingen people in the decades around the year 1700, and more specifically of the Cleywerff family, the owners of the shipyard on Havenstraat, and of the craftsmen who worked on the shipyard. The cesspit consists three fills: Fills A, B and D. Fill A contains material from the period of use between 1675 - 1735, Fill B was a more short-lived deposit with some finds from the last decades of the 18th century and Fill C contains finds from the end use and closure of the cesspit in the second quarter of the 19th century.

This article takes as its starting point artefacts recovered from excavations at Brodtkorbneset and Steintjørna, or rather a focus on selected categories of artefacts retrieved from these sites. These categories are artefacts related to iron processing, imported iron tools and cut pieces of copper alloy implements and ornaments. The artefacts are discussed in the light of the North Fennoscandian context. As all categories were brought to the sites over long distances, and the likely routes of traded iron, copper alloy vessels, cauldrons and kettles seem to have been through the interior of Finland, these objects were most likely part of Trans-Bothnian trade networks. The eastern ornaments seem to be connected with a mainly Novgorodian fur-trade network, with Karelian traders acting as intermediaries. The involvement of Karelians could have meant an extension of the inland trade routes, possibly including the western White Sea area and alternative routes of a southeastern south western direction. It is argued that the advantage of the Gulf of Bothnia was its central position as a transit area for long-distance trade and the distribution of objects to the upper Pasvik area in the early Iron Age/Early Middle Ages. The discussion therefore ends with a comparison of the models of trading networks and communities proposed for the area, and the context of hearth-row sites excavated in upper Pasvik (Fig 1).
Sherds from at least 66 vessels of the Baltic ceramic tradition has been recovered at the Fribrødre Å site. The vessels are clearly related to late Slav ceramic forms, particularly those of the Warder group but, most likely, none of the analysed sherds represents imported goods. Compared to the pottery from other locations, the vessels seem to have smaller rim diameters, and the assemblage is characterized by the absence of rarer types, such as lids, lugs (handles), lamps, etc., as well as large storage vessels and bowls. In relation to other published assemblages with their more varied ranges of domestic pottery, this suggests that the Fribrødre Å assemblage may represent a special case, as it may largely be composed of table wares. It is not possible to date the pottery more precisely than to the 11th and 12th centuries AD but it is thought that the vessels are largely contemporary and related to the activities at the shipyard dated to the late 11th century.

Jaravallen is the name of a beach ridge along the south and south-west coasts of Scania in the southern part of Sweden. Large amounts of flinttool preforms, particularly for square-sectioned Neolithic axes, have been found on three sites along this beach ridge. The several thousand preforms represent tool types from the Early Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age. The three sites have not been given much attention in recent archaeological research. With a basis in a discussion of action, technology, ritual and the continuity of place, these three sites are analysed and interpreted as representing traditions involving repeated actions over a long period of time. The production and deposition of the preforms are seen as an investment for the future. Anders Ho gberg, Malmo Kulturmi jlo malmo Heri tage, Box 406, SE-201 24 Malmo, Sweden

During the last three years the number of coastal Pitted Ware sites in southern Norrland has increased immensely. The northern border of this cultural expression has been pushed to the northernmost part of Hälsingland, that is as far as our new surveys have reached. In 1993 the site of Fräkenrönningen was excavated. Due to the fact that the cultural layer on this site was excavated in it s totality - not just sampled — an analysis concerning the relation between artefacts and constructions on the site have been possible. These new sourcematerials has enabled us to pose questions about settlement structure and settlement patterns that would have been impossible to pursue without these large and consistent materials.
