Teaching, Technology, and Teacher Education During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Stories from the Field, 2020
With the shift to online learning in the wake of COVID-19, teacher educators (TEs) risk becoming swept up in a “cult of efficiency” that can dehumanize the learning process for teachers and students. In this chapter, we share how we, four TEs, use new technologies to implement critical humanizing pedagogies. This involves pushing beyond purely cognitive approaches, while reflexively addressing issues of power, access, and representation with emphasis on valuing voices historically subjected to colonizing educational practices. Specifically, we discuss our approach to online assessments, focusing on meaning-making, connecting to social realities, and engaging multimodality. We close the chapter by offering a set of guiding questions and technology tools that may help TEs (re)designing their own online assessments with students’ humanity in mind.
Between Diversity and Uniformity: Identity Formation from a (Trans-)regional Perspective, 2024

According to the theory of idiopathic networks N.K. Jerne: the immune system reflects the state of the entire inner world of a person, and the state of the function of neutrophils can be used to judge the function of most cells of the whole organism. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of action on the CD47 signal “do not eat me” allows us to resolve issues with the low effectiveness of some antitumor drugs and correct their effects due to the correct direction of the toll-like pathway cascade. This will also allow for a comprehensive approach to the treatment of cancer patients and the creation of adequate effective methods of rehabilitation that will improve the quality of life of patients. Additionally, the presence of membrane damage and the release of extranuclear mitochondrial RNA and nuclear DNA into the bloodstream play an unimportant role, which leads to an uncontrolled pro-inflammatory cascade of systemic inflammatory response syndrome. An important decision is not only the integrative use of the drug and nutritional supplements, but the use of simple and cheap qualitative tests to evaluate the effectiveness of indirect outcome indicators, such as the assessment of the functional activity of neutrophils.

This dissertation explores the phenomenon of microarchitecture, here understood to refer generally to the dissemination of forms belonging to architecture on media where, unlike actual architecture, they do not play a structural role, being instead purely decorative. They constitute, therefore, representations of architecture. Though neither a medieval creation, nor restricted to this historical period, these elements were particularly favoured in the later centuries of the Middle Ages, all the more so in funerary sculpture. Despite their widespread presence, however, they remain a largely underexplored field in Portuguese medieval art studies. This dissertation thus firstly provides a historiographial review of research on microarchitecture both at national and international level. Next, taking funerary sculpture as a common denominator - which in Portugal translates into a body of fourty-four monuments featuring miniature architecture - it attempts to understand and define this phenomenon, while tracing its development over time. This overview starts in the second half of the 13th century, which witnessed what can be considered the first microarchitectural depictions on Portuguese monuments, and follows through the 14th and 15th centuries to end in the early 16th century, at a time when medieval architectural forms gave way to the new, early modern paradigm.

Accelerated contamination of habitats with debris has caused increased effort to determine ecological impacts. Strikingly, most work on organisms focuses on sublethal responses to plastic debris. This is controversial because (i) researchers have ignored medical insights about the mechanisms that link effects of debris across lower levels of biological organization to disease and mortality, and (ii) debris is considered non-hazardous by policy-makers, possibly because individuals can be injured or removed from populations and assemblages without ecological impacts. We reviewed the mechanisms that link effects of debris across lower levels of biological organization to assemblages and populations. Using plastic, we show microplastics reduce the 'health', feeding, growth and survival of ecosystem engineers. Larger debris alters assemblages because fishing-gear and tyres kill animals and damage habitat-forming plants, and because floating bottles facilitate recruitment and surv...
