Approximately half the worlds population now lives in urban conditions, and it is estimated one third of those live in slums or shanty towns (Whitehouse 2005). Auckland building vacancy rate currently sits at 13%, which equates to approximately 35,000m2. There is also a building program that will add 25,000m2 to this in the next 24 months. There is no need for more buildings or more space, continuing to respond to changing demands and needs by simply building is no longer a sustainable proposition. Architecture as we currently know it is in decline, it is dying.

This paper described a Five-Dimension Reflective Pedagogy Model used in a professional development program on Chinese culture teaching. It examined impacts of the Model on teachers' attitudes towards reflection in teaching and understanding of culture teaching in Chinese as a second language classrooms. Data included pre-and post-program reflections, video-taped cultural road map presentations, daily reflective writing, and lesson plans. The Model led to teachers' positive attitudes towards the use of reflection in teaching, enhanced confidence in culture teaching, and complicated understandings of culture.
The availability of technology in the mathematics classroom challenges the way teachers orchestrate student learning. Using the theory of instrumental orchestration as the main interpretative framework, this study investigates which types of orchestrations teachers develop when using technology and to what extent these are related to teachers' views on mathematics education and the role of technology therein. Data consisted of videotapes of 38 lessons taught by three teachers, who also provided information on their views through questionnaires and interviews. Qualitative analysis of these data led to the identification of orchestration types and teacher profiles. The orchestration preferences of the three teachers proved to be related to their views. A detailed analysis of one exemplary episode suggests how other theoretical perspectives might complement the theory of instrumental orchestration.
