The study examined urban homestead vegetable farming in Anambra State. Structured interview schedule was used to elicit information from farmers. A total of 100 respondents were selected using multi stage sampling technique. Descriptive statistics such as percentage, and mean scores were used to analyze data collected. Findings showed that, majority 72.0% of the farmers were female, married 75.0%, with mean age of 40 years, had formal education 93.0%, had farming as primary occupation 47.5%, had a household size mean of 5persons with monthly income mean of N10,500 and source of income was from sales of vegetables 62.0%. A good proportion 67.0% of the respondents travel 2-3 kilometers to sell vegetables to consumers in market, had farming experience mean of 15.5 years, 58.0% of the respondents had farm size mean of 1.5 ha, and land acquisition inherited 65.0%. Effects of green leafy vegetables production on farmers in urban area are: vegetables are cultivated and sold for income (=3.38), vegetable get to consumers fresh when cultivated in urban area (=3.50), vegetables are well stored in refrigerator in urban area (=2.67), there is good transportation system in urban area (=2.90) and easy access to farm input in urban areas (=2.57). Constraints to production of green vegetables by farmers in urban areas include non-availability of land farm (=2.82), lack of finance (=2.82), among others. The study recommends that homestead vegetable farming should be encouraged in order to increase vegetable production.

Our aim was to investigate how circadian adaptation to night shift work affects psychomotor performance, sleep, subjective alertness and mood, melatonin levels, and heart rate variability (HRV). Fifteen healthy police officers on patrol working rotating shifts participated to a bright light intervention study with 2 participants studied under two conditions. The participants entered the laboratory for 48 h before and after a series of 7 consecutive night shifts in the field. The nighttime and daytime sleep periods were scheduled during the first and second laboratory visit, respectively. The subjects were considered ''adapted'' to night shifts if their peak salivary melatonin occurred during their daytime sleep period during the second visit. The sleep duration and quality were comparable between laboratory visits in the adapted group, whereas they were reduced during visit 2 in the non-adapted group. Reaction speed was higher at the end of the waking period during the second laboratory visit in the adapted compared to the non-adapted group. Sleep onset latency (SOL) and subjective mood levels were significantly reduced and the LF:HF ratio during daytime sleep was significantly increased in the nonadapted group compared to the adapted group. Circadian adaptation to night shift work led to better performance, alertness and mood levels, longer daytime sleep, and lower sympathetic dominance during daytime sleep. These results suggest that the degree of circadian adaptation to night shift work is associated to different health indices. Longitudinal studies are required to investigate long-term clinical implications of circadian misalignment to atypical work schedules.

This study determined the relationship between the learner's level of preference in terms of peer study and individualized learning and the learners' academic performance. Further, this study aimed to propose intervention programs to enhance the learners' educational performance through peer study and/or individualized learning. This study utilized a quantitative correlational and comparative research design to determine the relationship between the learner's level of preference in peer study and individualized education and the learners' academic performance. This study was conducted at Talisay High School during the school year 2022-2023 with two hundred thirty-two (232) selected Junior High School learners as respondents. Random sampling was employed to specify the total number of respondents, and the sample size was determined using the Yamane Formula. Mean, standard deviation and percentage were used to determine the level of preference to peer tusdy and individualized learning. Moreover, Paired T test was used to measure the significant differences between the peer study and the individualized learning and Pearson R correlational coefficient was used to measure the linear association between variables. In addition, the researchers utilized an adapted modified questionnaire from Uzezi and Deya (2017) which underwent validation and reliability tests by experts. Based on the findings, there was a significant difference between the learners' preference level regarding peer study and individualized learning. Thus, the null hypothesis was rejected. This means that peer study and individualized learning are distinct and utilized by the learners. Moreover, peer study is not significantly associated with learners' academic performance; thus, the null hypothesis failed to be rejected. On the other hand, there was a significant relationship between the learners' preference for individualized learning and the academic performance of the learners. Thus, learners who preferred individualized learning excelled more in classes, increasing their academic performance. Since peer study is not significantly associated with the academic performance, the proposed intervention program is focused on improving peer study as a strategy to enhance the academic performance of the learners because peer study is still significantly preferred by the learners, like individualized learning. It is recommended that educators, parents, and school administrators are encouraged to prioritize and promote individualized learning approaches in the classroom and apply the proposed intervention program for both peer study and individualized learning.

Question: Cushion-forming vascular plants are adapted to alpine environments and act as ecosystem engineers by moderating microclimate and creating a fertility is- land under their canopy. Most of the available studies on cushion ecology have been devoted to plant facilitation, but none used a holistic approach that considers the response of co-existing plant species with other key ecosystem players. Here, we quantified the biogenic effect and facilitation capacity of Astragalus siculus, a spiny nitrogen-fixing cushion plant, and test the hypothesis that the facilitation effect would increase with elevation as stress gradient. Location: Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in the Mediterranean Basin. Methods: We combined chemical characterization of the soil with a description of the soil microbiota by high-throughput sequencing of bacterial and eukaryotic rRNA gene markers carried out at three elevations, that is 1650, 1900 and 2210 m a.s.l. In addition, we analysed the microclimate outside and inside the Astragalus canopy to assess the linkages between above- and below-ground ecosystem compartments and quantified the occurrence of co-existing vascular plants. Results: Astragalus cushions have strong biogenic effects on above- and below-ground conditions by dramatically increasing soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks at 1900 and 2210 m elevation. Moreover, a buffering of soil temperature and moisture regimes was recorded, with lower temperatures in summer but higher in winter inside the cushions. Cushions harbour a specific bacterial and fungal microbiota compared to external bare soil. Stem density and cushion height increase significantly with alti- tude, as does the nurse effect of the cushion on the growth and survival of co-existing vascular plants. Conclusions: As a result of cushion biogenic environmental changes, the effect of Astragalus on some of the co-existing species shifted from negative or null at 1650 m to facilitative along the elevation gradient. Furthermore, our data show a relationship between Astragalus morphological traits and soil biogenic changes related to soil chemistry and microbiota that affect plant interaction and coexistence.
