Envisioning Philippine Education

Envisioning Philippine Education after 10 years A higher education. A good job. A high payment/salaries. A better quality of life. It goes with one another, as what most people would think. It seems that pursuing a higher education is very important in order to make each one’s dream come true. It’s like chasing your dreams from far away, but when you enter higher education then you will be able to hold it after. But it doesn’t seem that simple after all, seeking good paying jobs are nerve-wracking, graduates would helplessly pray, “Please, don’t put my resume on the bottom line.” A lot of college graduates who hunts for job also often asked the same question over and over again after passing their resumes, while the employers would just put them on the bottom line, “I did not graduate from one of the top universities, is that why they won’t accept me?” It is often viewed that higher education is a commodity because it will determine one’s future. University is the best way out of poverty. That is why most high school students would want to go to universities, not just universities but one of the top universities to have a clear and bright future. But where do these universities located? They are in the urban areas, and not in the rural areas. It is because city schools have better resources; rural schools can’t afford good teachers, so the village students don’t get a good education. It is also the reason why city schools/universities have a lot of students who lived in rural areas because they think that their neighborhood could not provide a good quality of education for them to get a high paying job in the future. A tutor once said that, “Studying not only broadens our knowledge, but also gives us a good job and a better quality of life.”, and this view had been kept in mind by most students. It could be concluded that education is very expensive. House rentals/ boarding house rental/dormitory rental, food, fare to school, daily allowances, etc. Education costs everything, parents even costs their lives just to sent their children to school, and yet, they did not get what they deserve after all. Putting the situations mentioned above in the Philippine setting, Filipinos could really relate from the tiniest detail to the broadest one. That is why the government had taken a big step in order to solved this issues and other issues that also has its relevance to education, like unemployment, out of school youths, poverty, etc. After 10 years from the current educational system of the Philippines, if these steps are to be taken seriously and continuously until its improvement and until such time that these issues will be solved then I could say that Philippines will soon rise economically as what it wants to be. This step may took a very long time of preparation and evaluation, but if all the people would reach one goal together seriously (to have a good educational system), then problems that constantly came before would be handed greatly in the future. Envisioning Myself as a 21st Century Teacher As a future 21st century teacher, it is such a hard step to make a difference when one is already in the field. A lot of graduate student teachers makes a lot of complaints when they get to the field, it is because it seems that what they have learned from school could not be practiced constantly in the field, once I heard that teachers are receiving gifts from students in order to keep up from failing marks and I even witnessed it with my own eyes, then I thought “Is this what I will face someday, will I become like them? Isn’t it unfair for those who could not afford to buy gifts?”, and many things keep running in my mind. From that day on, I promised to myself that I will not make my future profession as an enterprise to earn profit from helpless students. As a teacher, it is a great responsibility to help the students in developing the skills that they need, and not just to earn from them, give them certificates with undeveloped skills, and send them away to discover the evil side after graduating. I have to developed my self with attitudes of a good teacher in order to do my responsibilities accordingly, and not to do the other way around. I should keep in mind the duties of a teacher.
