This paper reviews the past and current interest in using Bayesian thinking to introduce statistical inference. Rationale for using a Bayesian approach is described and particular methods are described that make it easier to understand Bayes' rule. Several older and modern introductory statistics books are reviewed that use a Bayesian perspective. It is argued that a Bayesian perspective is very helpful in teaching a course in statistical literacy.

Bayesian Statistics is typically taught, if at all, after a prior exposure to frequentist statistics. It is argued that it may be appropriate to reverse this procedure. Indeed, the emergence of powerful objective Bayesian methods (where the result, as in frequentist statistics, only depends on the assumed model and the observed data), provides a new unifying perspective on most established methods, and may be used in situations (e.g. hierarchical structures) where frequentist methods cannot. On the other hand, frequentist procedures provide mechanisms to evaluate and calibrate any procedure. Hence, it may be the right time to consider an integrated approach to mathematical statistics, where objective Bayesian methods are first used to provide the building elements, and frequentist methods are then used to provide the necessary evaluation.

Being able to provide sound evidence-based arguments and critically evaluate data-based claims are important skills that all citizens should have. It is not surprising therefore that the study of statistics at all educational levels is gaining more students and drawing more attention than it has in the past. The study of statistics provides students with tools, ideas and dispositions to use in order to react intelligently to information in the world around them. Reflecting this need to improve students' ability to think statistically, statistical literacy and reasoning are becoming part of the mainstream school and university curriculum in many countries. As a consequence, statistics education is a growing and becoming an exciting field of research and development. Statistics at school level is usually taught in the mathematics classroom in connection with learning probability. Topic Study Group 12 (TSG-12) included probabilistic aspects in learning statistics, whereas research with a specific focus on learning probability was discussed in TSG-11 of ICME-12.

The Learning and Teaching Support Network is a programme funded to promote good practice in teaching and learning in UK higher education. Subject networks have been established in twentyfour different areas, including one for Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research. Among all the different activities of this Network, the Web, of course, offers a rich source of primary material and a convenient means of dissemination. The Web provides a vast collection of material on every subject known to man, including statistics. The aim of the LTSN MSOR web site is to offer a convenient and filtered gateway to a wide variety of teaching and learning material. This paper describes some of the resources available in Statistics in particular. Some of the organisational aspects of setting up the website are also mentioned. BACKGROUND The Learning and Teaching Support Network is a programme funded to promote good practice in teaching and learning in UK higher education. Subject networks have ...
Much of the course will be focused around the computing system R which provides various statistical facilities including high quality graphics. It is an open source system and is available free. It is 'not unlike' the expensive commercial package S-PLUS, the prime difference is that R is command-line driven without the standard menus and dialog boxes in S-PLUS. Otherwise, most code written for the two systems is interchangeable.

In this book review, I offer a chapter-by-chapter recension and general comments about Richard McElreath's second edition of Statistical Rethinking: A Bayesian Course with Examples in R and STAN. Two examples of linear regression modeling and the generalized linear model with the book's own R package rethinking highlight the flexibility and usefulness of considering the Bayesian approach to statistical modeling advertised by McElreath.

The aim of this talk is to give a non-technical overview and examples of usage of StatisticalEnvironment, a Mathematica package that provides a data centred environment for statistical computations. It is very flexible and provides facilities for organisation of computations. The user creates data objects by providing the system with input data and, possibly, additional information. Calculations on objects are done by asking for their properties.” Data” is used above in a very general sense.
