[Paper in Italian] English summary: Latin Borrowings in Berber: an overview This paper deals with some issues concerning the Latin loanwords in Berber. In particular, the extent of the Latin element in the Berber lexicon is considered. It seems that Latin borrowings in Berber have been often underestimated, in consideration of three factors: 1. The Berber language tends to assimilate quickly foreign borrowings, adapting them to its phonetics and morphology, which makes it harder to recognize very early loans. 2. The Latin language in North Africa has evolved over centuries and has probably given rise to "African romance" dialects, whose loans can not always be distinguished from borrowings owed to the contact with Romance languages of Europe. 3. Above all, we must consider that probably a considerable amount of Arabic lexicon in Berber took the place of former Latin borrowings, particularly within the religious and spiritual domains, in which several words of Latin origin are still recognizable.
