We are in an information era where generating and storing large amounts of data are commonplace. A growing number of organizations routinely handle terabytes and exabytes of data, and individual digital data collections easily reach multiple gigabytes. Along with the increases in volume, the modality of digitized data that requires efficient management and the access modes to these data have become more varied.

This introduction to database systems offers a comprehensive approach, focusing on database design, database use, and implementation of database applications and database management systems. KEY TOPICS: The first half of the book provides in-depth coverage of databases ...
Databases based on relational, object-oriented, and object-relational models represent significant advances in database technologies. In the context of general-purpose database management systems, the fundamentals of database models are examined. A historical perspective on the evolution of major database models is provided. The principal concepts underlying relational, object-oriented, and object-relational database models are presented with examples. Finally, a brief view of database federation issues is introduced and served as the foundation for computerized databases are essential and inseparable components of most of today’s information systems and data base technology.

The Indiana Center for Database Systems (ICDS) at Purdue University has embarked in an ambitious endeavor to become a premiere world-class database research center. This goal is substantiated by the diversity of its research topics, the large and diverse funding base, and the steady publication trend in top conferences and journals. ICDS was founded with an initial grant from the State of Indiana Corporation of Science and Technology in 1990. Since then it has grown to now have 9 faculty members and about 30 total researchers. This report describes the major research projects underway at ICDS as well as efforts to move research toward practice.
