A quantitative content analysis of recently published research in information behaviour is compared with previous analyses to create a 30-year profile of work in the field. Variables of particular interest include research methods employed, user groups studied, relative interdisciplinarity, theoretical frameworks applied, attention to affect, and attention to systems design.

Information behavior is an important area of research in library and information science (LIS) that has evolved over the last 75 years. The aim of this study is to investigate the recent trends of information behavior research by providing insights into emerging topical areas within information behavior. To conduct this study, the bibliographic data from Scopus was used, and the trends of information behavior were traced by using variations of key terms used in information behavior research, such as " information behavior " , " information seeking behavior " , and " information needs. " In addition, the trends were analyzed in terms of content words in the title, highly cited journal articles, disciplinary categories, and author keywords. Information behavior research has its roots in LIS, but the findings of the study reveal that information behavior has expanded to other disciplines by intersecting a variety of topical areas. In particular, this study showed that information behavior in the health/medicine domain has become a predominant emerging topical area of research. In order to enhance our understanding of complex human behavior, future research should focus more on interdisciplinary aspects by measuring the scope of information behavior.

Introduction. This study examined how human information behaviour researchers present research study participants through the following research questions: How do human information behaviour researchers describe participants in reports of empirical research?; and, What strategies do human information behaviour researchers use in their presentation of participants? Method and Analysis. A content analysis was conducted of 96 research reports published in the 1996-2004 ISIC proceedings. Articles were coded for data collection and data analysis methods, the use of theory, and parts of the article (title, abstract, literature search, method, findings, discussion and conclusion) where participants were included. Also noted were terms used to label research participants, data collection practices and strategies used by authors to present users. Results. Authors use a variety of terms and data collection practices that construct the information user or research participant as both periphera...

Introduction. This pilot study examined how current information behaviour research addresses the implications and potential impacts of its findings. The goal was to understand what implications and contributions the field has made and how effectively authors communicate implications of their findings. Methods. We conducted a content analysis of 30 randomly selected refereed research papers on information behaviour published between 2008 and 2012 in the U.S. and Canada. Analysis. Analysed elements included journal, year, author affiliation, types of implications, theory, methodology, context and scope of implications, location of implications, intended audience, beneficiaries, and future research. Results. Twenty-three papers offered practical implications; seven included both practical and scholarly implications. Only eight papers referenced theory and of these, only three generated theoretical implications. Seventy percent of studies discussed practical implications for librarians ...
‘User’ being the prime focus of libraries, a number of user centric devises and services are designed basing on their needs and preferences. The latest technological developments have been modifying the ways and means of obtaining objective data about users. Though the conventional surveys are not totally replaced in current digital era, design of web-based surveys, distributing links over professional forums, list servers and social networks or through email/chatting contacts is becoming common in individual researchers, institutions and publishing companies. The metrics that are made available from the log data of online servers are revealing various characteristics of usage and forming basis for planning several advancements in libraries. The library applications indicated the use of such metrics for evaluation duly supplementing with survey methods.

Digital libraries are an important information source of high quality information for various user groups in education, research and industry. With an exponential growing amount of digital content, digital libraries face the challenge of enhancing the support for information seeking. This paper takes the users' perspective and investigates whether the users of digital libraries perceive that their information demand is satisfied. The approach taken is an empirical qualitative study with various user groups in two different countries. From an information demand perspective, the main result is the support for the conjecture that there is a coupling between the user's context and the information demand. Furthermore, a usability questionnaire was used to identify shortcomings and propose improvements in the digital library systems applied at the two study locations.

This investigation used content analysis to examine the information needs and uses literature published from X90-1994. Analyses measured the degree of interdisciplinarity evident in references cited, determined whether this literature was concerned with users' cognitive processes and with systems' design and use, and identified the research methods used. Secondary analyses included journal type, author type, article type, whether the literature was grounded in theory, and user groups considered. The value of this study was in the development of content analysis categories specifically applicable to the information needs and uses literature, that measure particular aspects of interest to researchers working in this area. The field of information needs and uses in library and information science (LIS) is broadly defined as that which is concerned with information seeking, determining users' needs for info~ation, and information use. In this study, the term "users" means clients or patrons of libraries or other information services, as well as individuals or groups whose particular information needs are addressed by LIS research and practice. Information needs and uses studies in LIS have a long history. Scanning this literature from Berelson's (1949) study of public library users, which he concluded by calling for a recommitment by librarians to their traditional middle-class patrons, to Hewins' (1990) review of information needs and uses studies, it becomes clear that information service practitioners and researchers have, with varying degrees of sophistication and success, attempted to discern who library patrons are, how they use libraries, and, more recently, what the information needs of peopIe are and how various sources of info~ation help or do not help them, independently of formal information delivery systems such as libraries. Although the research literature of information needs and uses constitutes only approximately 8% of the total research literature of LIS (Jarvelin & Vakkari, 1990), analysis of LIS research, in general, has significant consequences. As Hernon (1992) I am very grateful for the encouragement and direction for this study provided by Gloria Lcckie and Patricia Dewdney. The statistical expertise offered by Christian Sylvain was invaluable.

This investigation used content analysis to examine the information needs and uses literature published 1984-1989, and 1995-1998. Comparisons are made with similar analyses previously published for the period 1990-1994. Analyses measured degree of interdisciplinarity evident in references cited and identified subject areas cited, determined whether this literature was concerned with users' cognitive processes and with system design and use, and identified research methods used. Secondary analyses included journal type, author type, article type, whether the literature was grounded in theory, and user groups considered. This study extends results published previously, and demonstrates longitudinal development of research in this subfield of library and information science.
