Toxicology and Chemistry) Europe Environmental Education Award at its Europe Annual Meeting in Warsaw, Poland. This is a singular distinction in that this award is traditionally given to academic teachers, not the Managing Editor of four journals. The nomination for this award highlighted Almut's incredible career of contributions to environmental education: Almut Heinrich was educated in Heidelberg, Germany, where she received the Master Diploma at the University of Heidelberg and started her career in publishing at Springer-Verlag Heidelberg. While at Springer-Verlag, she had the unique opportunity to work as a Publisher Editor in the Chemistry Department under the leadership of Dr. Friedrich L. Boschke, one of the leading science editors of his time. She was responsible for the development of a program on Applied Chemistry that more and more focused on Environmental Chemistry (e.g. The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry by Otto Hutzinger), Food Chemistry (e.g. Zeitschrift für Lebensmittel-Untersuchung und-Forschung) and Analytical Chemistry (e.g. Fresenius' Zeitschrift für Analytische Chemie). Under Almut's guidance, the program eventually comprised monographs, textbooks, advances series, handbooks (e.g. Handbuch der gefährlichen Güter by Günter Hommel) and journals (e.g. the Bulletin of Polymer Chemistry). After 14 years with Springer, Almut moved to ecomed publishers, Landsberg/Lech (Bavaria) where she started in 1989 "Umweltwissenschaften und Schadstoff-Forschung (UWSF)"

Ambio
Reflections about three influential environmental contaminants papers published in Ambio are presented. The PCB Story by Jensen in (1972) had a very important influence on environmental chemistry. This is captured by way of comments and personal anecdotes. Wania's and MacKay's (1993) paper highlights the physical chemistry underlying transport of PCBs and organochlorine pesticides from temperate zone ecosystems to Polar Regions. Their paper exemplifies how principles of chemistry and environmental processes informed understanding the biogeochemical cycles of chemicals of environmental concern (CEC). Mergler et al.'s (2007) paper reviews knowledge of methyl mercury exposure and impacts in humans and served as an example of how to approach exposure and human health concerns for all CECs. All great progress. Then, the question: ''How we missed for two decades the importance of plastics in the environment identified in a paper published the same year as The PCB Story? Are we missing yet another important environmental contaminant now? Keywords Biogeochemistry Á Organochlorines Á PCBs Á Plastics Á Methylmercury ''The PCB Story'' (Jensen 1972) Jensen's ''The PCB Story'' appeared in Ambio in August-September of 1972. It was a riveting story then and is still so now. The paper provided a full accounting of the discovery and confirmation of PCBs in the range of samples analyzed, including a figure illustrating confirmatory mass spectrum. There had been indications in the literature that a paper such as this was much needed because by 1972 there Ó Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences 2021 www.kva.se/en
This review details the most important achievements in the field of ecological chemistry and environmental protection, obtained at the State University of Moldova and Institute of Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The main research directions are described, as well as main scientific laboratories and centres of these two institutions.
Chemistry Journal of Moldova, 2016
As scientifi c direction, Ecological Chemistry has been successfully developing in Moldova over the past three decades. Its history began in 1985, when the First International School on Ecological Chemistry of the Environment was organized. More than 80 remarkable scholars from the major research centres of the USSR and 17 foreign countries were among the participants of the event. The main decision made during the event was to develop this scientifi c direction and the regular organizing of conferences and symposia dedicated to it. Further, for more than 30 years the Ecological Chemistry has been intensively expanding, being one of the priorities for the sustainable development and international cooperation providing tangible impact to the research and innovation activities in Moldova. Organization of the ECOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY Conferences in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova transformed into important tradition and represent a series of successful conferences occurred in

This report provides a brief review of the 20th annual meeting of the German Language Branch of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC GLB) held from September 7th to 10th 2015 at ETH (Swiss Technical University) in Zurich, Switzerland. The event was chaired by Inge Werner, Director of the Swiss Centre for Applied Ecotoxicology (Ecotox Centre) Eawag-EPFL, and organized by a team from Ecotox Centre, Eawag, Federal Office of the Environment, Federal Office of Agriculture, and Mesocosm GmbH (Germany). Over 200 delegates from academia, public agencies and private industry of Germany, Switzerland and Austria attended and discussed the current state of science and its application presented in 75 talks and 83 posters. In addition, three invited keynote speakers provided new insights into scientific knowledge 'brokering' , and-as it was the International Year of Soil-the important role of healthy soil ecosystems. Awards were presented to young scientists for best oral and poster presentations, and for best 2014 master and doctoral theses. Program and abstracts of the meeting (mostly in German) are provided as Additional file 1.
