The phenomenal growth of W orld M usic is contingent upon its othering and the cult of authenticity. The valorization of certain artists as representatives of authentic ethnic national musical cultures answering a Western desire to return an organic wholeness located in indigenous languages and traditional instruments is reminiscent of previous primitive returns. This essentialist privileging of an imagined authenticity is matched with a paradoxical ethic of hybridity whereby ethnic music is electronically enhanced. " Kool" is the projection of a desire for vitality, joy and style on a black otherness. However, while the perceived " koolness" of black culture led to its adoption by youth subcultures, the myth of Asian cultures as erudite, spiritual, and hardworking imbues them with a rather uncool aura.
