This is a translation of selected passages of “Hana ni ikiru hitotati he (Message for those who live for flowers)”(1967) by Suido Yamane (1893 - 1966). His insight in ikebana is inspirational for those who wish to look deeply into what ikebana is, and for those who are not satisfied with prevailing discussions about ikebana.

We propose the extensively studied Chiba section of the Chiba composite section (CbCS) as the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) to define the base of the Middle Pleistocene Subseries and Chibanian Stage. The CbCS is a continuous and expanded marine sedimentary succession within the middle of the Kokumoto Formation, Boso Peninsula, Chiba Prefecture. It contains well-preserved pollen, marine micro-and macrofossils, a tightly-defined Matuyama-Brunhes (M-B) paleomagnetic polarity boundary, and numerous tephra beds, allowing the establishment of a robust and precise chronostratigraphic framework across the Lower-Middle Pleistocene boundary. Its deep-marine, open-ocean continental slope setting, coupled with high sedimentation rates with no evidence of abrupt deposition, has resulted in preserving both terrestrial and marine environmental changes in and around Marine Isotope Stage (MIS). We have performed high-resolution oxygen isotope analysis, as well as detailed sedimentological, geochemical, and biostratigraphic studies of the CbCS, confirming the completeness of the stratigraphic interval spanning the Lower-Middle Pleistocene boundary. The M-B polarity boundary serves as the agreed primary guide for the Lower-Middle Pleistocene boundary, and the CbCS represents one of the most detailed marine sedimentary records yet obtained for this reversal, yielding an astronomical age of. ka with a duration of ca.. kyr. This section therefore offers an exceptional opportunity to calibrate the geological time scale as well as understand the dynamics of the geodynamo. The widespread Byk-E tephra lies close to the reversal, allowing precise regional lithostratigraphic correlation. The CbCS is easy to access from international airports. The section will be permanently preserved and maintained by the local government as a natural monument. Based on these attributes, the base of the Byk-E tephra bed in the Chiba section is the best horizon for establishing the GSSP that will define the Lower-Middle Pleistocene boundary.

This study examines the potential role of local festivals in enhancing communication among residents in a local community. The study focuses on two traditional local festivals, Ennichi and Jizobon, in Nagata Ward, Kobe City. We conduct a questionnaire survey to understand how these festivals form new interactions in the community, and how people enjoy communication and develop relationship based on them. The results indicate that Ennichi and Jizobon have mainly connected residents of almost homogeneous characteristics who had not had chances to meet without the festivals and have often formed strong ties among them that are expected to work during disasters. Based on the finding that organizers of the festivals have played a role of hubs of the network, the study further considers how to achieve sustainable development of the festivals and the social network in the local community.

This dissertation is a transversal study of changes undergone by the kōwaka ballad during Japan's transition from the middle ages of civil war, free exchange with Asia, and European contact, to the orderly domestic and foreign relations of the Edo period. As the kōwaka, which in the sixteenth century had rivaled the noh theatre for warrior patronage, began to change medium, format, and sociopolitical context in the seventeenth century, the traditional view is that it "quickly deteriorated once the samurai began turning to urban fads and foppery." (Araki 1964) However, my materials tell a different story. Each chapter grows from my transcription, edition, and translation of a previously-undiscussed artifact. An illustrated handscroll of a latter-day ballad in Princeton's library shows how that format was used for political commentary by Kyoto book craftspeople and their warrior-bureaucrat patrons in the time of Edo's ascendancy. A libretto held in Paris adapts the same ballad to the early puppet theatre, this time making the main characters female and intensifying the melodramatic sentiment that appealed to the urban commoner class created by Kyoto's new monetized economy. A noh play extant in three libretti in Tokyo rewrites the same story as an unproblematic paean to shogunal authority, while nevertheless displaying a critical consciousness of the working of ideology. In Volume Two, I introduce three pieces of Jesuit missionary literature in Japanese from a 1591 manuscript in the Vatican Library, whose vocabulary and formulae borrow heavily from the kōwaka. A miracle story set in Japan bears a colophon suggesting its function as a polemic against Hideyoshi's expulsion edict. A ballad of The Passion of the Christ displays Japanese Jesuit appropriation of kōwaka iv discourse in its most developed extant form. A devotional meditation on the Instruments of the Passion grapples with a poetic paradox created by the role of honorifics in Japanese, while a theological postscript is rendered in a formulaic, Luso-Japanese discourse created on analogy with Sino-Japanese. Together, these new texts reveal not the kōwaka's death but its diffusion and renewal along many cultural trajectories during Japan's transition to early modernity. v

This paper aims to analyze façade design of historic townscape of Mihonoseki, located northeast to Matsue, focusing "Engawa" and "Maedoma" attached to rooms along streets are commonly seen and form characteristic façade of town houses. We surveyed the distribution of them and reevaluated their role in townscape. In result, we chalked out tendency of façade similarity in the reformation and reconstruction of traditional houses and points to be considered in the townscape guild lines.

記事区分:原著多読の効果を上げるには、授業内多読と平易な多読用本が不可欠である。授業内多読の効果は、忙しい学生の読書時間を確保できるためだけでなく、一斉読書により集中力を養い、教師の助言を受け、より効果的な多読を推進できるためである。平易な多読教材は、英語が苦手な学生の情意フィルターを下げ読む気を起こさせる。また、平易な教材をたくさん読むことにより多読初期段階での基礎固めができ、自動化が促進されてその後の進歩が容易になる。この研究では、毎週授業内で平易な本を使用し読書を行った再履修クラスと、毎週一定時間の授業内多読および授業外多読を行った1回生クラス、主に授業外でのみ読書を行った2回生クラスのリーディングカの伸びと多読に関する情意面の反応を比較した。結果は、1回生のクラスがリーディングカの伸びが一番大きく、再履修クラスがそれに続き、2回生の伸びが一番少なかった。多読に関するアンケートでは、再履修クラスがすべての項目で最高の肯定的な反応を示した。(英文) In-class SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) and easy reading materials are indispensable for a successful extensive reading program.
