The excavations at this site were carried out by GRUPEP-Arqueologia/UNISUL in partnership with MAE/USP, in which were found eight burials, ceramics, concretion, lithic artifacts and large amounts of faunal remains involved in a ceremonial context. The archaeological faunal remains collected at the site are mainly composed of cartilaginous and bony fish, marine and terrestrial mammals, reptiles, molluscs and birds such as the albatross (Thalassarche sp.) and Magellanic Penguin, (Spheniscus magellanicus). For this research, 1234 samples of archaeological faunal remains were analyzed with the objective of assessing the presence of S. magellanicus at this site. It has been verified the presence of bone elements from S. magellanicus in 229 samples, with a total of 444 specimens identified (NISP) and minimum number of individuals (MNI) estimated at 35. Human action was observed due to crop marks in 40% of the analyzed bones. Thus, the presence of the Magellanic Penguin at Galheta IV is
an opportunistic and occasional food supply, as well as related to the ritualistic context represented by this archaeological site.

It is located in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, and is dated to 3060 + 30 CAL BP. This study presents the preliminary results of zooarchaeological analyses developed on this site, using previously published studies about faunal remains in hunter-gatherer rockshelters of the same region as a comparison method. From this it is possible to establish the occupation patterns for domestic activities, food consumption and disposal, as inferred by residential mobility models.
