Three Dilemmas For Alethic Functionalism

According to Alethic Functionalism, the theory of Truth Michael P. Lynch advocates in his impress... more According to Alethic Functionalism, the theory of Truth Michael P. Lynch advocates in his impressive book Truth as One and Many, 'Truth is an immanent functional property that is variably manifested' 1. That Truth is a functional property means that it is the property which essentially realises a conceptual role, the truth-role. This role is individuated by what Lynch calls 'truisms', that is to say a core of conceptual, commonsense truths about truth. These are: Objectivity (if a proposition is true things are as the proposition says they are); Norm of belief (we should believe only true propositions); Aim of Inquiry (other things being equal, believing true propositions is a worthy aim of our inquiries). That Truth is variably manifested means that there are different properties which play the truthrole in different domains of discourse and which therefore realise Truth in those domains. Alethic Functionalism, it is argued, overcomes the main problems of traditional Alethic Monism, according to which there is only one property which plays the truth-role, and standard Alethic Pluralism, advocated by Crispin Wright, according to which truth-bearers in different domains of discourse are true in different ways and there is no single truth-property that all true truth-bearers share 2. The main problem of Alethic Monism is, according to Lynch, the so-called 'scope problem', i.e. that whatever property the monist chooses to identify with truth (for instance correspondence or an epistemically constrained property such as Wright's superassertibility or Lynch's superwarrant) is at best able to account for the truth of truth-bearers belonging to some specific domain of discourse. In this chapter some basic notions and recent developments in the theories of judgement and truth... more In this chapter some basic notions and recent developments in the theories of judgement and truth will be applied, as a case study, to real estate estimates in order to answer the following questions: are they descriptive or evaluative judgements? Is their truth absolute or relative to some parameter? Is their truth a matter of correspondence with objective, mind-independent facts or is it a matter of coherence with some mind-dependent standards (in a broad sense of &quot;mind-dependent&quot; which includes cultural and social standards)? The answers to these questions will show that real estate estimates are an interesting borderline case between descriptive and evaluative judgements, absolute and relative truth, correspondence with an objective reality and coherence with mind-dependent standards.

Schnieder (2020) argues, against Orilia (2009) and Koslicki (2013), that claims of existential gr... more Schnieder (2020) argues, against Orilia (2009) and Koslicki (2013), that claims of existential grounding of the form "the fact that x exists is grounded in the fact that y is F" cannot be grounded in claims of existential dependence of the form "x existentially depends on y" and defends the view that the latter claims are grounded, via a definition of existential dependence, in the former. I will firstly argue that Schnieder's main point against the claim that existential grounding is grounded in existential dependence is not conclusive; I will then put forward a proposal concerning how claims of existential grounding can be grounded in claims of existential dependence. The proposal is a third way between those of Schnieder and Orilia/Koslicki which, although accepting the former's definition of existential dependence in terms of grounding, makes room for the latter's idea that existential dependence does the real job in structuring reality.

The paper aims at identifying similarities and differences between two different ways of using th... more The paper aims at identifying similarities and differences between two different ways of using the word "true", on the one hand when it is used to refer to a property of what we say or believe, here called "words' truth", on the other when it is used to refer to a feature of things in general (as when we say "he is a true friend"), here called "things' truth". I will point out how such similarities and differences may be usefully described starting from the feature of truth called "transparency" which is often considered as exclusively pertaining to words' truth. The upshot of the paper will be that Aquinas was right in considering the two kinds of truth as species of the unique genus "adaequatio rei et intellectus", but that this conclusion can be reached without any commitment to the ideology (in the Quinean sense) of the correspondence theory of truth.

The Dependence of Truth on Being: Is There a Problem for Minimalism?

The aim of this paper is first to defend the intuition that truth is grounded in how things are a... more The aim of this paper is first to defend the intuition that truth is grounded in how things are and, second, to argue that this fact is consistent with Minimalism. After having cashed out that intuition in terms of explanatory claims of the form 'if it is true that p, it is true that p because p', I set out an argument against Minimalism which is based on the same intuition, and I argue that a strategy the minimalist could adopt to resist the argument, i.e. to deny the correctness of the intuition, is flawed. Then I explain why the intuition is correct and I make some claims concerning the kind of explanations which are involved in it. Now the stage is set up to present the right way for the minimalist to resist the argument. I finally answer some objections. 14 I think that this is the right insight of the so-called pragmatic theories of explanation such as those developed by Van Fraassen (1980) and Achinstein (1983). Jenkins (2008) claims that why-explanations must be distinguished from other kinds of explanations such as, (for instance), how-explanations, what-explanations and 'explications' of concepts or words, although many of these explanations at least entail why-explanations. Schnieder (2009) argues that this is the case for how-explanations and what I will say in the following entails that this is also true for some 'explications'. 15 The situation described in the example is a Burge-case (Burge (1978a), (1979)), one in which it seems correct to attribute to a subject beliefs whose content he does not fully understand. The importance of the phenomenon of believing without understanding in learning processes has been stressed by Recanati (1997), which develops a suggestion already made by Burge (1979). A situation of this kind is also described in Künne (2003: 370) .

By the end of the seventies the rise and fall of the correspondence theory of truth in contempora... more By the end of the seventies the rise and fall of the correspondence theory of truth in contemporary philosophy seemed to be of interest only to historians of philosophy. Having emerged in works by Moore, Russell, Wittgenstein, correspondence theory had already begun to fall out of favour after Frege‟s identification of facts and true propositions; it later met its ruin, first with Wittegenstein‟s criticism of the tractarian conception of language, then with Strawson‟s questioning of the existence of facts in his attack on Austin‟s version of the correspondence theory and finally with the stones launched by Davidson‟s slingshot against the distinctness of facts 1 . Correspondence theory seemed to have been superseded on the one hand by more refined Tarski-style definitions of truth-predicates, and on the other by the growth of the deflationist stance rooted in the work of Ramsey 2 .

La critica all'antirealismo costruttivista del pensiero postmoderno è al centro della riflessione... more La critica all'antirealismo costruttivista del pensiero postmoderno è al centro della riflessione di Maurizio Ferraris per lo meno a partire da Il mondo esterno (Ferraris 2001). Forme radicali di costruttivismo sono state però difese anche al di fuori del pensiero postmoderno tanto nella tradizione della filosofia analitica quanto, più recentemente, nell'ambito delle scienze cognitive. Nell'articolo viene dapprima presentata e criticata un'affermazione dal netto sapore costruttivista fatta da Vittorio Gallese e George Lakoff in uno degli articoli più influenti nel dibattito degli ultimi anni sulla natura dei concetti: The Brain's Concepts (Gallese, Lakoff 2005). Tale posizione viene quindi messa in relazione con quella forma di antirealismo costruttivista, detta anche relativismo concettuale, difesa, in modi e con esiti diversi, da filosofi quali Nelson Goodman, Hilary Putnam e Richard Rorty. Si sostiene quindi che tutte queste forme di antirealismo costruttivista incorrono in un dilemma: o esse abbracciano la problematica tesi metafisica di un'efficacia causale a ritroso delle nostre menti sul mondo oppure si riducono a una plausibile, ma ontologicamente innocua, affermazione dell'esistenza, in linea di principio, di molteplici modi di categorizzare la realtà e, nel caso delle teorie cosiddette incarnate della cognizione, della dipendenza di tali modi dalle forme che assume l'interazione senso-motoria di un organismo col suo ambiente. Viene infine mostrato come dall'osservazione dei molteplici modi in cui è possibile categorizzare la realtà sia possibile trarre conclusioni metafisiche di segno opposto all'antirealismo costruttivista.

Almeno a partire dagli anni '90 del secolo scorso, il dibattito analitico sulla verità si è articolato lungo tre assi principali: il deflazionismo, il dibattito sui cosiddetti truth-makers ed il relativismo.

Entità di questo genere sono state chiamate "fattori di verità" (truth-makers): i fattori di verità sono le entità che rendono vere le proposizioni. Il dibattito sui fattori di verità è stato centrale nella discussione filosofica degli ultimi vent'anni: nozioni come quella di rendere vero e fattore di verità promettevano infatti da una parte di gettare un ponte fra temi centrali in filosofia, come la teoria della verità, l'ontologia e la metafisica, dall'altra di rivitalizzare la veneranda teoria della verità come corrispondenza. In quanto segue verranno esposte le linee principali del dibattito che ha ruotato intorno a due questioni: 1) la corretta analisi della nozione di rendere vero; 2) gli argomenti pro o contro l'esistenza di fattori di verità. LA FONDATEZZA DELLA VERITÀ Alcuni di noi credono che Berlusconi sapesse che Ruby era minorenne, altri credono il contrario. Chi di noi crede il vero? Al di fuori di sparute province filosofiche, pochi di quelli che comprendono il significato della parola "vero" sarebbero disposti a negare che c'è solo un tribunale, una suprema corte d'appello legittimata ad attribuire il torto e la ragione quando si tratta di verità o falsità: la realtà stessa. Se è vero che Berlusconi sapesse o non sapesse che Ruby era minorenne non dipende dai nostri desideri a riguardo e nemmeno dalle prove di cui disponiamo a sostegno dell'una o dell'altra tesi: i giudici, e gli storici dopo di loro, potrebbero non arrivare mai a disporre di alcuna prova conclusiva a sostegno di una o dell'altra tesi, eppure solo una di esse rimarrebbe vera e lo sarebbe perché e solo perché le cose stanno in un certo modo. Se Berlusconi sapeva che Ruby era minorenne allora proprio e solo per questo chi di noi credeva che lui lo sapesse crede qualcosa di vero e chi di noi credeva il contrario qualcosa di falso; se invece non lo sapeva allora, proprio e solo per questo, la ragione stava dall'altra parte. La realtà è, normalmente, ciò di cui intendiamo parlare e ciò a cui sono rivolte le nostre credenze, di conseguenza se ciò che diciamo e crediamo è vero lo è perché la realtà, il mondo, sono fatti in un certo modo. In che modo? Ovviamente nel modo in cui noi pensiamo e crediamo che siano fatti. Chiamerò tale intuizione, che sembra cogliere un aspetto centrale della nozione di verità, l'intuizione della dipendenza della verità dalla realtà o intuizione della fondatezza della verità. Alethic Functionalism, it is argued, overcomes the main problems of traditional Alethic Monism, according to which there is only one property which plays the truth-role, and standard Alethic Pluralism, advocated by Crispin Wright, according to which truth-bearers in different domains of discourse are true in different ways and there is no single truth-property that all true truth-bearers share 2. Having emerged in works by Moore, Russell, Wittgenstein, correspondence theory had already begun to fall out of favour after Frege‟s identification of facts and true propositions; it later met its ruin, first with Wittegenstein‟s criticism of the tractarian conception of language, then with Strawson‟s questioning of the existence of facts in his attack on Austin‟s version of the correspondence theory and finally with the stones launched by Davidson‟s slingshot against the distinctness of facts 1 . Correspondence theory seemed to have been superseded on the one hand by more refined Tarski-style definitions of truth-predicates, and on the other by the growth of the deflationist stance rooted in the work of Ramsey 2 .

La critica all'antirealismo costruttivista del pensiero postmoderno è al centro della riflessione... more La critica all'antirealismo costruttivista del pensiero postmoderno è al centro della riflessione di Maurizio Ferraris per lo meno a partire da Il mondo esterno (Ferraris 2001). Forme radicali di costruttivismo sono state però difese anche al di fuori del pensiero postmoderno tanto nella tradizione della filosofia analitica quanto, più recentemente, nell'ambito delle scienze cognitive. Nell'articolo viene dapprima presentata e criticata un'affermazione dal netto sapore costruttivista fatta da Vittorio Gallese e George Lakoff in uno degli articoli più influenti nel dibattito degli ultimi anni sulla natura dei concetti: The Brain's Concepts (Gallese, Lakoff 2005). Tale posizione viene quindi messa in relazione con quella forma di antirealismo costruttivista, detta anche relativismo concettuale, difesa, in modi e con esiti diversi, da filosofi quali Nelson Goodman, Hilary Putnam e Richard Rorty. Si sostiene quindi che tutte queste forme di antirealismo costruttivista incorrono in un dilemma: o esse abbracciano la problematica tesi metafisica di un'efficacia causale a ritroso delle nostre menti sul mondo oppure si riducono a una plausibile, ma ontologicamente innocua, affermazione dell'esistenza, in linea di principio, di molteplici modi di categorizzare la realtà e, nel caso delle teorie cosiddette incarnate della cognizione, della dipendenza di tali modi dalle forme che assume l'interazione senso-motoria di un organismo col suo ambiente. Viene infine mostrato come dall'osservazione dei molteplici modi in cui è possibile categorizzare la realtà sia possibile trarre conclusioni metafisiche di segno opposto all'antirealismo costruttivista.

The main thesis here defended is that such similarities and differences may be usefully described starting from the feature of truth called "transparency" which is often considered as exclusively pertaining to words' truth.

Almeno a partire dagli anni '90 del secolo scorso, il dibattito analitico sulla verità si è articolato lungo tre assi principali: il deflazionismo, il dibattito sui cosiddetti truth-makers ed il relativismo.

Entità di questo genere sono state chiamate "fattori di verità" (truth-makers): i fattori di verità sono le entità che rendono vere le proposizioni. Il dibattito sui fattori di verità è stato centrale nella discussione filosofica degli ultimi vent'anni: nozioni come quella di rendere vero e fattore di verità promettevano infatti da una parte di gettare un ponte fra temi centrali in filosofia, come la teoria della verità, l'ontologia e la metafisica, dall'altra di rivitalizzare la veneranda teoria della verità come corrispondenza. In quanto segue verranno esposte le linee principali del dibattito che ha ruotato intorno a due questioni: 1) la corretta analisi della nozione di rendere vero; 2) gli argomenti pro o contro l'esistenza di fattori di verità. LA FONDATEZZA DELLA VERITÀ Alcuni di noi credono che Berlusconi sapesse che Ruby era minorenne, altri credono il contrario. Chi di noi crede il vero? Al di fuori di sparute province filosofiche, pochi di quelli che comprendono il significato della parola "vero" sarebbero disposti a negare che c'è solo un tribunale, una suprema corte d'appello legittimata ad attribuire il torto e la ragione quando si tratta di verità o falsità: la realtà stessa. Se è vero che Berlusconi sapesse o non sapesse che Ruby era minorenne non dipende dai nostri desideri a riguardo e nemmeno dalle prove di cui disponiamo a sostegno dell'una o dell'altra tesi: i giudici, e gli storici dopo di loro, potrebbero non arrivare mai a disporre di alcuna prova conclusiva a sostegno di una o dell'altra tesi, eppure solo una di esse rimarrebbe vera e lo sarebbe perché e solo perché le cose stanno in un certo modo. Se Berlusconi sapeva che Ruby era minorenne allora proprio e solo per questo chi di noi credeva che lui lo sapesse crede qualcosa di vero e chi di noi credeva il contrario qualcosa di falso; se invece non lo sapeva allora, proprio e solo per questo, la ragione stava dall'altra parte. La realtà è, normalmente, ciò di cui intendiamo parlare e ciò a cui sono rivolte le nostre credenze, di conseguenza se ciò che diciamo e crediamo è vero lo è perché la realtà, il mondo, sono fatti in un certo modo. In che modo? Ovviamente nel modo in cui noi pensiamo e crediamo che siano fatti. Chiamerò tale intuizione, che sembra cogliere un aspetto centrale della nozione di verità, l'intuizione della dipendenza della verità dalla realtà o intuizione della fondatezza della verità.
