Il legato fiorentino vi giunge il 26 ottobre, mentre si svolgevano ancora le cerimonie funebri per il pontefice. In quella situazione di stato di assedio ricorrente nei periodi della sede vacante Roma è «in travaglio grande», occupata dalle truppe di Francia e di Spagna e dai soldati dei baroni romani. Incerte sono le scommesse sul nome del nuovo pontefice 1 . L'abilità e i mezzi finanziari di Giuliano Della Rovere, cardinale di San Pietro in Vincoli, sembrano tuttavia prevalere.

The Aquila volante - attribuited to Leonardo Bruni in printed editions - is survived anonymous ... more The Aquila volante - attribuited to Leonardo Bruni in printed editions - is survived anonymous with the title of Aquila in two manuscripts: M (Milan, Bibl. Braidense, codici Morbio, n. 3, first half of 15th c., Central-Southern Italy); P (Paris, Bibl. Nationale, Ital. 438, from the Aragonese Library in Naples, carrying an incomplete text, copied in 1447). Fragments of the work have been identified in two Florentine mss.: Florence, Bibl. Nazionale, II.IV.32 (second half of 14th c.) and Palatino 591 (dating to the pontificate of Niccolò V, 1447-1455). In manuscripts the text is divided in four books that outline the human history from its origins to the beginning of 14th c. After a brief Biblical introduction, the narrative goes on with the labours of Hercules (book I), the story of Aeneas and his arrival in Italy (book II), the most important events in Roman history up to Catiline’s conspiracy, the war between Pompeius and Caesar, the government of Caesar and his direct descendants (books III-IV). The last chapters of the fourth book are devoted to describe the province of Campagna in the Papal State. They record events concerning this territory and the properties of noble families, with special attention to the masters of Ceccano; the popes born in Campagna are mentioned too and finally the text presents a list of the apocalyptic signs announcing the end of the world.
