Thus, this book aims to provide the reader with a series of different approaches. First, through a comparison of specific works by Spanish and Chinese playwrights during the Ming and Habsburg periods, we aim to show that at times certain commonalities are in reality spaces fraught with misunderstanding. A melancholic character in Spain would not be the same as a melancholic figure in Chinese theater. A particular plant or flower had completely different symbolic meanings. However, it is curious to note how certain character types in both theaters resemble each other; and how the interaction between actors and audience would show clear parallels. At the same time, this is a book that also finds the thrill of correspondences and affinities as they are recovered through modern staging, climate change, universality of emotions, representations of friendship, folk characters, metaphors and dreams.

It offers ten fresh perspectives on Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote 400 years after the publication of its Second Part and consists of two sections. The first group of articles examines meta-readings and visual elements of the masterpiece in relation to some major literary forms and genres—such as novels of chivalry, the Alexandrian epic narrative and the genesis of detective fiction—, all of which contributed to the creation and maintenance of a quixotic tradition in Western writing. The second set of essays explores the transformation of the novel in various linguistic, generic and sociopolitical contexts and formats, from Spanish royal festivities, foreign translations and chapbooks to macroeconomics and Latin American street theater.

He defined these underlying conditions as the rules of formation that have established the bases for the investigation, and he commonly referred to them as épistèmes. In practice, they were thought to determine the grounds in which information and facts were represented and structured at a given time and at certain moment. These requirements have evolved over time from one period to another, but sometimes two different methodologies have coexisted temporarily. Nevertheless, this coincidence ultimately underscores the decline and the collapse of the former mechanism to construct meaning and the rise and the emergence of its alternative composition of the signifying and the signified.
