The study aims to identify how women participated in Porto Alegre’s rowing associations in the transition of the 19th century to the 20th century. An information collection was carried out in historical sources, such as: commemorative and sportive albums and magazine. Inequality was perceived between the meaning of the reproduction of the masculine and feminine roles, each one complying distinct functions. Rowing practice was for selected men, but dissuaded to the women, which performed behind-scenes and were relegated to an opacity that starts being changed as women conquered great visibility in sports.

Athletics was introduced in Porto Alegre’s sportive associations by the German immigrants in the late of the XIXth century with the denomination of turnen (gymnastic). By that time, the practices of running, jumping and throwing didn’t receive the name of athletics in the historical sources consulted yet. Only in the first decades of the XXth century it’s possible to identify the presence of the term athletics grouping the sportive practices. Thus, the study has the aim to rebuild how athletics practice was instituted in the sportive associations of Rio Grande do Sul’s state capital, Porto Alegre, in the first half of the XXth century. Collecting data was carried out in printed sources, which were submitted to a documental analysis. Athletics emerged inserted in the German community and, throughout the years, it gained space in associations which their pioneers didn’t have this cultural identity. The spread of athletics favored the creation of an own entity which later grouped other sports and developed the organization of competitions in the city.

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar cómo fue organizada la práctica del turf en Porto Alegre, desde la fundación de los primeros prados, a finales del siglo XIX hasta el cierre de la mayoría de los prados, en la primera década del siglo XX. Para ello, se realizó el análisis de fuentes recogidas documentales e  impresas. Fue evidenciado que la élite rural portuguesa brasileña organizó espacios para las carreras de caballos, pero sin el carácter de las asociaciones deportivas germano brasileñas. Con la creación de la Asociación de Protección del Turf, hay un movimiento para promover el turf bajo el punto de vista deportivo, no sólo para beneficiarse de este deporte. Probablemente, desde entonces, la movilización en todo el territorio de Porto Alegre ahora, por primera vez pasa a establecerse como una expresión de las asociaciones deportivas, posiblemente, que constituye la principal aportación portuguesa-brasileña a esta práctica en Porto Alegre.

Regional Sports Council (RSC) of Rio Grande do Sul was installed in the capital of this state, Porto Alegre, in the early 1940’s. The RSC/RS implantation is current of the promulgation of the Decree-Law n° 3.199, of April 14th, 1941, which instituted the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Regional Sports Councils in the Brazilian states. The aim of this research is to reconstruct the period of foundation of RSC-RS, installed in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul state. Intending so, a research was carried out in printed sources in the RSC-RS’s archive, in books about sportive legislation, in the commemorative book and in the model card of the charter. The analyzed documentation revealed that RSC-RS is among the first regional councils created in Brazil, but it has faced difficulties to act in the control of the clubs in the beginning. RSC-RS was gradually affirming itself in the sportive scenery and had an expressive actuation in the regulation of the sportive practices of the clubs. RSC–RS remained in activity for many decades, even after the promulgation of the law n° 8.672, of July 6th, 1993, that has extinct NSC and, consecutively, has also closed activities of the Regional Sports Councils in the Brazilian states. There was a weakness of the RSC-RS actuation along with the sportive clubs, but its maintenance represents, in a way, the resistance of the sportive directors.

The guiding question of the study is how street automobilism official races ensued, in Porto Alegre, in the 1920s and 1930s. Through the analysis of printed documents and oral sources, it became clear that the first automobile disputes, held at the beginning of the twentieth century, were called “illegal street races”. The first official races are organized only in the mid 1920s. Still, “illegal street races” continue being held.

Soccer practice in Rio Grande do Sul’s clubs, for over 20 years, has been governed by the Federation of Rio Grandense Sports (FRGS). This supremacy has generated conflicts, mainly with soccer clubs affiliated with the entity. How conflicts ensued between FRGD and soccer clubs is the guiding question of this research. The documentary analysis of Porto Alegre newspapers revealed that there were three important moments of confrontation in the period in which soccer was under the direction of FRGS. Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense and Sport Club Internacional led the movement that sought to break with the FRGD, accused of imposing itsinterests. There was a break of FRGD with these clubs, a fact that influenced the realization of the soccer championships. Subsequently, FRGD resumed with dissidents clubs aiming to reestablish the success of its championships.
