In the late 6th Century BC Attic potters develop a globular aryballos shape that differs from the... more In the late 6th Century BC Attic potters develop a globular aryballos shape that differs from the Corinthian type by a semi-circular, sometimes funnel-shaped mouth. This is supported by over 60 vessels of various materials and origins. First, the vessels have one or two L-shaped handles (type A)that disappear in the late classical period (type B). The subjects on red-figure aryballoi of type A are influenced by male ideals, while on shape B also female ideals are represented. The conventional interpretation of the aryballos as vessel of men therefore needs to be revised for the late Classical period. Depicted in contemporary art, the aryballos always maintains its attributive use as a symbol of the palaestra, personal care and social status. The quantitative discrepancy between displayed and preserved vases can be explained by the use of ephemeral, leather aryballoi, to some extent with a metal mouth, which in some cases is preserved.
