In this to paper we aim to discuss some of the complexities involved in the translation of childr... more In this to paper we aim to discuss some of the complexities involved in the translation of children's literature. Therefore, we seek to review the literature in search of a concept for children' s literature, identifying some intersection points among a wide array of discourses and the challenges encountered in establishing a working definition due to the complexity of the elements involved. The arguments about the definition of children's literature allow us a deeper look about the complexity and peculiarities of the genre, as pointed out by theorists such as Peter Hunt, Ronald Jobe and Zohar Shavit. Abstract The use of fossil fuels for electricity generation is primarily responsible for global g... more Abstract The use of fossil fuels for electricity generation is primarily responsible for global greenhouse gas emissions. The increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in recent years is believed to have been driven by economic and population growth. Consequently, many countries have been looking for ways to reduce their pollution. This study aims to verify the impact of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), population growth and the generation of renewable energies on CO2 emissions in the 50 largest world economies over the years 1990–2015. To do so, a hierarchical regression modeling was performed, considering "country" as the most comprehensive level and "year" as the most specific one. The results confirmed the positive impact of GDP and population on CO2 emissions and renewable energy generation as a way to reduce emissions. China and Denmark stood out in the analysis. The former has become the largest emitter of CO2 on the planet, while the latter has increased its share of renewable energy in its electrical matrix by more than twenty times and displayed a tendency to reduce CO2 emissions.

This paper aims to show how a parallel corpus-initially designed to investigate practices of tran... more This paper aims to show how a parallel corpus-initially designed to investigate practices of translating children's fantasy literaturecan be used in the translator education environment. It suggests that the hard evidence produced by such corpus can provide trainee students with useful "points of orientation" for the treatment of names in translating children's fantasy literature. PEPCOCFL-The Portuguese-English Parallel Corpus of Children's Fantasy Literature-is used to illustrate how this can be achieved. Additionally, a tentative typology is offered so as to help students to classify the procedures most commonly used by four professional translators when dealing with names.

Este artigo apresenta uma breve reflexão sobre a Tradução Automática (T.A) a partir de uma perspe... more Este artigo apresenta uma breve reflexão sobre a Tradução Automática (T.A) a partir de uma perspectiva histórica no contexto dos Estudos da Tradução. Em busca de uma maior compreensão sobre alguns dos aspectos mais significativos da área de T.A, consideramos empregar a dicotomia “humano versus automático” para analisar esses dois processos tradutórios distintos. Esta análise consiste em explorar a relação entre o modelo de tradução tripartido de Eugene Nida (tradução humana) e a Abordagem Trifásica dos sistemas de tradução por máquina (tradução automática). Nesse sentido, apresentamos uma síntese da cronologia da Tradução Automática, relacionando-a à evolução da linguística no contexto das gramáticas formais. A partir dos resultados obtidos, propomos uma interpretação das influências e das afinidades observadas entre os processos de tradução humano e automático.
From the perspective of translation competence (Pym, 2000; Schaffner, 2000; Alves, Magalhaes & Pa... more From the perspective of translation competence (Pym, 2000; Schaffner, 2000; Alves, Magalhaes & Pagano, 2002; Albir Hurtado & Alves, 2009), we aim to explore the importance of translation theory in translators’ education. Although translators may be unconsciously theorizing whilst at work (Pym, 2010), awareness of different theories might bring practical benefit to deal with translation challenges. We additionally propose a translation task-based activity that combines students’ knowledge of theory with the development of a particular translation competence, namely textual competence (Schaffner, 2000). The proposed activity focuses on culture-specific items , widely investigated elements in Translation Studies (Aixela, 1996; Chesterman, 2000; Nord, 1997). This paper describes COPA-TRAD Version 2.0, a parallel corpus-based system developed at the Unive... more This paper describes COPA-TRAD Version 2.0, a parallel corpus-based system developed at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) for translation research, teaching and practice. COPA-TRAD enables the user to investigate the practices of professional translators by identifying translational patterns related to a particular element or linguistic pattern. In addition, the system allows for the comparison between human translation and automatic translation provided by three well-known machine translation systems available on the Internet (Google Translate, Microsoft Translator and Yandex). Currently, COPA-TRAD incorporates five subcorpora (Children's Literature, Literary Texts, Meta-Discourse in Translation, Subtitles and Legal Texts) and provides the following tools: parallel concordancer, monolingual concordancer, wordlist and a DIY Tool that enables the user to create his own parallel disposable corpus. From a Translation Studies perspective, translation assessment is gradually becoming more popular... more From a Translation Studies perspective, translation assessment is gradually becoming more popular thanks to increasing academic interest in translator education. In fact, we believe that evaluation should be more deeply explored in order to systematise and consolidate how it is carried out, especially in a particular Brazilian context. As we still witness an unwelcome focus on summative assessment of students with little room for constructive feedback from educators, the purpose of this article is to discuss ways to assess translation students that move beyond traditional approaches. The focus here is on formative assessment, whose emphasis on feedback better suits the dynamic nature we believe translator education should have. Furthermore, we shall review the concepts of translation competence and translation error as important elements within translation evaluation, as well as peer and self-assessment, which promote a more student-centered and participatory environment.
