Interactive mirrors, typically combining semi-transparent mirrors, digital screens and interactio... more Interactive mirrors, typically combining semi-transparent mirrors, digital screens and interaction mechanisms have been developed for a variety of application areas. Drawing on existing techniques to create interactive mirror spaces, we investigated their performative qualities through artistic discovery and collaborative prototyping. We document a linked set of design explorations and two public, site-specific experiences that brought together artists, communities, and HCI researchers. We illustrate the abstracted interactive mirror space that practitioners in the performance art, theatre and museum sectors can work with. In turn, we also discuss six performative design strategies concerning the use of physical context, movement and narrative that HCI researchers who wish to deploy interactive mirrors in more mainstream settings need to consider.
Digital Participation through Social Living Labs

We describe a series of four socially engaged, interactive artistic interventions that took place across forests, urban and rural environments in the United Kingdom and Brazil between 2009 and 2015. These projects used sensing and online technologies to exchange information between communities in the United Kingdom and Brazil to engage with their local environments, presenting a framework that focused on the human element of human–computer interaction specifically supporting sensory and embodied experiences of scientific data. These approaches encourage digital inclusion and interdisciplinary thinking about local and global issues of deforestation and climate change. The authors argue that an abundance of opportunities, networks and local knowledge can be mediated through both digital and analogue technologies, in order to provide truly ‘lived’ experiences of environmental and digital participation.

Despite our best efforts to date, policy level discussions and climate science have not motivated a great deal of public response. An alternative to top-down science communication is of paramount importance to tackling these issues. In this paper we present a disruptive innovation that facilitates culturally-aware artistic community engagement with these issues through sensor data and blogging.
