However, without numerically efficient forward calculations, even state-of-the-art inversion procedures are too computationally intensive to implement. We adapt a method previously used to treat transport in electronic waveguides to describe acoustic wave motion in complex media with high gains in computational time. The method consists of describing the system as if it was made of disconnected parts that are patched together. By expressing the system in this manner, wave-propagation calculations that otherwise would involve a very large matrix can be done with considerably smaller matrices instead. In particular, by treating one of such patches as a target whose parameters are changeable, we are able to implement target-oriented optimization in which the model parameters can be continuously refined until the ideal result is reproduc...

The backcross breeding procedure was used to transfer the imidazolinone tolerance allele from mutant 93AS3510 to the recurrent parents 'BRS 7 Taim' and 'BRS Pelota'. Individual herbicide-tolerant plants were selected in each generation, for three backcrossings (RC1 to RC3), followed by three selfing generations (RC3F1 to RC3F3). The best four RC3F3 lines for agronomic traits were genotyped with 44 microsatellite markers. The observed conversion index of the new imidazolinone-tolerant lines varied from 91.86 to 97.67%. Pairwise genetic distance analysis between these lines and 22 accessions from the Embrapa's Rice Germplasm Bank clustered the new lines with their respective recurrent parents, but not with 'IRGA 417', which was originally used as recurrent parent to derive IRGA 422 CL, the only imidazolinone-tolerant irrigated rice cultivar recommended f...

Several techniques for database replication using group communication have recently been proposed... more Several techniques for database replication using group communication have recently been proposed, namely, the Database State Machine, Postgres-R, and the NODO protocol. Although all rely on a totally ordered multicast for consistency, they differ substantially on how multicast is used. This results in different performance trade-offs which are hard to compare as each protocol is presented using a different load scenario and evaluation method. In this paper we evaluate the suitability of such protocols for replication of On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) applications in clusters of servers and over wide area networks. This is achieved by implementing them using a common infrastructure and by using a standard workload. The results allows us to select the best protocol regarding performance and scalability in a demanding but realistic usage scenario.
