They have gradually established themselves as a voting bloc whose goals are usually advanced by lobbyists affiliated with the Republican Party. They have utilized their own literal interpretations of the Bible to justify and rationalize the need for stronger U.S. support for Israel, and advance other local and foreign policy goals. Presidents Reagan, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump have embraced evangelicals' efforts to legitimize Israel's control over the Palestinian-occupied territories. In doing so, they have not only hindered the failing Israeli-Palestinian peace process but may have also shifted the politically and territorially oriented conflict into a far more religiously centered one.
