Joseph Atoyebi is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts, Business and Science, University College of the North (The Pas campus), Manitoba, Canada. Joseph has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Leipzig, Germany. His areas of focus include descriptive/theoretical linguistics, endangered language documentation, and cultural studies. His current project is "An Appraisal of the Proverbial Sayings of Igbo in the Major Works of Chinua Achebe." Joseph is also the editor of Muses from the North, a journal that serves as a platform for Indigenous students at UCN to showcase their literary and artistic skills.

This study investigates the connection between the sociolinguistic variables and language variati... more This study investigates the connection between the sociolinguistic variables and language variation in Anambra State. The objectives of the study were to: (i) explore the link between language variation and sociolinguistic variables in Anambra Igbo; (ii) examine the sociolinguistic variables that influence linguistic variation in Anambra Igbo; (iii) determine the semantic implications of language variation on Igbo language. The study adopted Communication accommodation Theory as the theoretical framework. To ensure the reliability of the data gathered for the study, the triangulation technique was employed during the gathering of the data for the study by the use of Ibadan 400 wordlist of basic items, interview and observation methods. Purposive sampling method was used to select fifty (50) Anambra Igbo language speakers that cut across various demographic study areas. Using qualitative analysis, the data were analysed to determine how the demographic status of Igbo speakers in Anambra affect their Igbo language use, as well as the semantic implications of any detected variation for Igbo language. The findings show that: (i) the sociolinguistic status of an individual dialect speaker in Anambra State to an extent determines how he/she uses language; (ii) the six major factors recorded as motivators of linguistic variation are age, education, movement, culture, geographical location, language contact/language exposure; and (iii) in spite of the identified linguistic variation in Anambra Igbo as a result of the influence of sociolinguistic variables, the intelligibility was not impaired and the variants provided evidence of synonymy in the language.

Several arguments have been put forward by some scholars regarding the source of nasalized vowels... more Several arguments have been put forward by some scholars regarding the source of nasalized vowels across languages. Greenberg (1966:509) posits that nasalized vowels derive from earlier states of oral vowels in proximity with nasal consonants. That is, a syllable-final sequence of an oral vowel followed by a nasal consonant, vN. According to Greenberg, the typical sequence of event from one point in the evolution of nasalized vowels to the final stage can be represented as: VN > V 7N > V 7. It then implies that an oral vowel assimilates the nasal feature of a syllable-final N and the latter (i.e. the N-coda) is deleted. Hyman (1972:171) and Williamson (1973:115) have a different view regarding the source of nasalized vowels. They note that some Benue-Kwa languages could historically have CNV sequence, meaning that the source of Kwa CV7 developed from a historic CNV. It has prevo icing,but at the same time it behaves like a typical voiceless stop in raising the f0 of the following vowel, and in having the tendency to decrease surrounding vowel durations. / k﷿˛/ and /﷿g﷿˛/ are furthermore distinguished from each other with respect tothe duration of prevoicing. The single stops /k/ and / ﷿g/, on the other hand, differ not onlywith respect to voice onset time, f0 and vowel duration, but also with respect to the completeabsenceorpresence of prevoicing.
