city´s renovation plans. A model of preventive archaeology which will cover several areas within archaeological heritage management would be shown together with measures for other values and urban and cultural resources as part of an effort to expand archaeological knowledge within society
This paper summarizes part of the results of the research, and proposes Best Practices for cities from the perspective of the treatment of the historical urban landscape and the contribution of archaeology to them.
There has been a lack of visibility or consideration, both public and scientific, of the archaeological dimension in many of these cities, and even it is absent even in the inscription of World Heritage. When it is present, it does not always correspond to a modern perspective of archaeological science and it does not generate speeches integrating other cultural values, on the contrary, it is treated in isolation. There is also a frequent lack of coordination between relevant bodies and planning the cultural and archaeological properties of these cities. In addition, models or measures of management from Europe have been applied to Latin America without adapting them to Cultural Heritage realities and concepts differentiated in contexts that, at times, are very different.
These proposals of actions and tools are keys to good practices in Archaeology, in this case applied to the cities. These suggestions range from the creation of repositories with scientific and technical information about these cities and their Archaeology, to the promotion of the participation and cooperation of citizens in a way active in urban archaeological management.
and World Heritage (WH) sites in European and Latin-American
is presented in this paper with special interest in the Spanish case,
as it is the second country with the most WH sites inscribed (41).
The study is based upon the Archaeological Heritage, which can
be considered in all types of WH properties, even in the cases in
which the sites have been submitted without “archaeological references”.
In this way, managing world heritage sites must include
adequate measures for all kinds of cultural properties belonging
to the site, even if they are not cited in official documentation of
UNESCO declarations.
Analyzing the UNESCO and Advisor bodies’ reports, as well as
bibliography and direct documents of some WH Sites, it can observed
that there are a lot situations where Archeological Heritage
is not considered or it is only valued as a scientific part of historical
studies of the site. However, there are no programs, nor specific
or adequate projects dealing with this archaeological category of
Heritage (its conservation or diffusion).
Consequently, a model of Preventive Archeology is proposed to
improve Archaeological Heritage Management in these WH sites.
Several examples of activities to put in practice and to achieve greater
diffusion are presented in this paper.
