(eng) Among the paratext, the frontispiece has gone through the most significant development during the modern era. From a simple space of inscription, it becomes, from the middle of sixteenth century, a space of figuration inspired by architectural and pictorial models. Put at the threshold of the book, it is also conducive to programmatic discourse. Thus, this gateway or pictorial preface to the text is deployed to instruct the reader about the content of the book, but also to lure the customer into buying it. However, beyond this commercial strategy, the frontispiece also plays the role of political, intellectual and artistic promotion – a role that this article aims to demonstrate through the often overlooked example of fortification treatises.

In this paper we aim to re-examine the relationship between painting and cartography through the genre of battle painting wich develops at the end of the XVIth century. We will return to the way the rise of cartography changed the artist’s view on the historical event and generated a new duality in the representation of war. Likewise we will address how using mathematical methods influenced their approach of the landscape wich becomes the real theatre of siege warefare.

With their appearance on the market, scholars gave to the practical art of fortress building a theoretical approach that progressively raised military architecture from applied mechanics to a mathematical science. As a window to the knowledge contained in the book, frontispieces of fortification treatises turn out to be the most suitable place to expose the new status of military architecture and of the engineer, who also gained a more honourable standing.
Based on a few major case studies, this paper aims to highlight how those treatises circulated in early modern Europe and the role played by their title page to promote this new science of fortification.

Gateways to the Book investigates the complex image-text relationships between frontispieces and illustrated title pages with the following texts in European books published between 1500 and 1800. Although interest in this broad field of research has increased in the past decades, many varieties of title pages, many printers and books remain as yet unstudied.
The fifteen essays collected in this volume tackle this field from a great variety of academic approaches asking how the images can be interpreted, how the texts and contexts shape their interpretation and how they in turn shape the understanding of the text.
