This nucleus includes: the megalithic enclosure Monte Novo 1, excavated in the 70s of the 20th century by Joaquina Soares and Carlos Tavares da Silva and in the 80s by Mário Varela Gomes; a settlement area designated as Monte Novo 3, which includes two probable hut bases and a pit that was filled with archaeological materials; finally, a cult area designated as Monte Novo 4, which includes two adjoining sanctuaries.

Several structures, identified as hypogea, are reminiscent of Phoenician sanctuaries and, in their architecture, seem to represent the goddess Tanit. In addition, results of the epigraphic analysis of an inscribed stone, are presented wherein the “god of the Dacians” is mentioned, suggesting their presence in the islands during the Roman period. Overall, these preliminary finds raise new questions regarding the pre-Portuguese occupation of the archipelago as well as pre-compass navigation in the Atlantic, possibly using the stars.

These rock art sites were used as passage or territory possession marks and in some cases may have been associated with ritual celebrations. In this paper we will present the results of the orientation in the landscape of 688 engraved outcrops in 11 mountain areas between Alva and Ceira rivers. We will address the possible relation of the orientation of podomorphs and the isolated sites in V-shaped valleys with the Summer Full Moon.

The major axes of the Maroiço structures from Pico Island may have been aligned on the summit of Pico Mountain and, reciprocally, on the setting sun at summer solstice over the neighbouring Faial Island. The artificial caves near the sea excavated in Monte Brasil, Terceira Island, may have integrated solar calendrical marks, especially for the Equinox sunset over the distant S. Jorge Island.

This evidence was dated by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, and indicates the presence of human activity in Terceira Island before or during the XIth century. The evidence consisted in a man-made rock basin, which was found in a site that contains also striking similarities with many other as-pects from ancient cultures, including other man-made rock basins, arrangements of large stones which resemble megalithic constructions, and inscriptions in stones which resemble ancient pe-troglyphs. Although the dating of this evidence is highly suggestive of the presence of human ac-tivity in the Azores Islands long before the arrival of the Portuguese navigators of the XVth century, there is no clear evidence which enables us to identify which specific culture may have existed in

XIX.

Archaeological excavations were carried out between 1997 and 2001 under the direction of José Manuel Rolão, and raised a collection of over 1500 lithic materials, 85% of which are flint. The study of the lithic industry gives the impression that it was a seasonal occupation and possibly done systematically, with a similar set of goals and activities maintained throughout its existence. The main strategies for flint were to produce bladelets and microliths tools, with the cores abandoned at an exhaustion stage.
