TOM BROWN, LARGE COLORFUL FLORAL STILL LIFE IN SUNLIGHT

This 11x14-inch oil painting was created outdoors in the summer sunlight. I painted it during an outdoor oil painting workshop I taught for other artists.

The warm summer sunlight brings out the delicious colors in the fruit and flowers, and I captured that effect in this original oil painting.

I am including a photo showing some of the students set up near my easel as this was being painted. My easel is just to the right of center in the photo, with the painting in progress.

(I am not at my easel in the photo because I was taking this picture.)

Just beyond my easel you can see the table with the still life set up.

LARGE TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR PAINTING

This one is really special. The entire world seemed at peace. That was the feeling I wanted to capture here. And the restful colors and gentle light helped communicate that sense of serenity.

But I also wanted to use bold, dynamic brush strokes while maintaining that feeling. It was a balancing act; trying to express serenity, yet using powerful brush techniques in the same painting.

I was pleased with this one, and I think I achieved my goal. I hope you agree.

This painting is called “THE WORLD AT PEACE”. It is a 12x16 inch plein air oil painting done this morning on location at the edge of a canyon here in Southern California.

COLORFUL CONTEMPORARY PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

I want my paintings to communicate the feeling of the moment. Sometimes mellow and serene. Sometimes loaded with energy like this one. I want them to touch your soul, like beautiful music or good writing.

I look for the big shapes of color and value, and try to get just enough information to tell the story while leaving the rest to the viewer’s imagination. I was pleased with this one; I hope you agree.

This painting is now on eBay with a VERY LOW starting bid. Bid here:

TOM BROWN PAINTING OF UNUSUAL TOMATOES

One of my oil painting students gave me these homegrown tomatoes as a thank you gift.

I can’t remember the name of the larger tomato at the top of the painting, but it’s very unusual and it inspired me to arrange a few of these beautiful colors together and paint them.

The photo on the left shows the entire gift basket of luscious tomatoes. The photo on the right shows this painting in progress in my studio.

TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR PAINTING

Why do I paint? Painting is to artists what play is to a child. Children play for no other reason than the pure enjoyment of it, with no thought of payment. It is something they would do for nothing.

Painting, like the play of children, allows an artist to see things as if for the first time. The beauty of the world is brought into focus. It becomes an escape into joyfulness.

This tiny 4x5-inch study is an example of that. It’s a quick little painting done at the conclusion of a Plein Air Workshop this weekend.

There is no moral here, nor timeless message. It was done for no other reason than the simple sensory pleasure of playing with my paints.

This corner of a red-tiled roof, sunlight glinting off a window pane and palm trees waving gently in the balmy breeze were just my excuse to play with sparkling colors. And perhaps capture the spirit of the moment, to relive it at another time. It was done for fun.

I hope you find time for play in your day. Thanks for looking, and if you’d like this little jewel with its sparkling colors email me at:

SUNSET, TOM BROWN ACEO POSTCARD POCKET PAINTING

SOLD
This original oil painting is a little jewel with lots of sparkle.

Paintings this size are known by various names such as miniatures, ACEOs (Art Cards Editions & Originals), postcard paintings or pocket paintings. And they are highly collectible.

When time or circumstances do not permit a larger painting these small sizes allow me to explore an idea, capture a moment on location or work out problems before launching into a large painting in the studio.

This painting is a mere 4”x3”. It is small enough to fit in your pocket or use as an elegant bookmark. And yet in the right frame it will make a beautiful statement in any room of the home.

TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP PAINTING

SOLD

Morning fog diffused the distant hills as I began my first demonstration painting at Saturday’s workshop. This spot is well-named as the “Top Of The World”

This was a larger canvas than I often paint on location, measuring 18 inches wide, and I wanted to show the start of the painting today as well as the final result.

I was interested in capturing the misty look created by the fog, and I also wanted to emphasize the pattern of white homes across the hilltop. Later in the morning the fog lifted and the ocean was visible beyond this hill. Imagine the view enjoyed by the residents of those hilltop homes!
