Agha Hasan Abedi — legendary banker & founding President of #BCCI (Bank of Credit & Commerce International) — the world’s 7th largest privately owned bank.

A bank run by Pakistanis 🇵🇰 & financed by the Ruling Family of Abu Dhabi 🇦🇪 & prominent family offices of Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦.
Founded in 1972, during a meeting of senior bankers in Beirut, #Lebanon 🇱🇧, #BCCI went on to open up branches & launch full-fledged commercial banking operations in 73 countries around the world by 1989. This included opening the first branch of a foreign-owned bank in #China 🇨🇳.
In the mid-1980’s, Agha Hasan Abedi (or Agha Sahib as he was called fondly by colleagues), negotiated the acquisition of a very unique banking operation in the #UnitedStates 🇺🇸. The bank acquired had licenses to operate in 15-16 states in the US. An unprecedented transaction.

Giving Evidence today publishes #research about Royal patronages of charities: what are they, which charities have them, and whether they help.
It's in today's @TheTimes (£).
Our findings include these (thread):

thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/h…
#charity #Royal #royalfamily
2/ UK charities should not seek or retain #Royal patrons expecting either many public events with them, nor an effect on revenue.

We couldn't find any effect of Royal patronages on charities’ revenues, despite multiple sophisticated statistical analyses.
#charity #fundraising
3/ We were surprised that three-quarters (74%) of UK charities which have #Royal patrons did not get a single public engagement with them during 2019.

Only 1% of charities which have #Royal patrons got more than one public engagement with them during 2019.

I have an idea:

If everyone dislikes/hates/does not approve of @jkenney and the UCP donors....why not regular everyday people like us donate to a grassroots organization or group that is struggling under the @Alberta_UCP government?
I’ve donated $100.00 to @HarvestHillsYYC and I challenge others to donate as well. Let’s show the @Alberta_UCP and @jkenney that we Albertans take care of our own since our own government doesn’t, can’t or won’t!

Emergency Situation:

We have a young family that just moved here from Lethbridge. We were able to help them get into a basement suite and get them a hamper but we still need help with raising money for the rest of the damage deposit...
...the landlord was gracious enough to let Harvest Hills Cares Calgary pay a partial Damage Deposit and two months rent ahead of time.

The remaining amount owing for the rest of the Damage Deposit is: $650.00

Etransfers can be sent to:

1/ Q: I am so lucky to have my health and my job. Knowing that many others don’t enjoy the same good fortunate right now, I am eager to contribute. Are there evidence-based approaches to charitable #giving?
2/ A: Absolutely. Here are three great options:
(1) Donate $ to food banks;
(2) Choose a charity vetted and scored by a data-driven recommendation organization (e.g. Charity Navigator);
(3) Give cash directly to those in need through a trusted intermediary (e.g. GiveDirectly)
3/ More context:
We Nerdy Girls are so heartened by how many people have asked us a variant of this question. Our followers’ collective generosity blows us away! Thank you for being beacons of hope during these turbulent times.

So why do we recommend the three options above?

Since no other group wants to take me up on my offer for free advertising. I am featuring:

**Harvest Hills Cares Calgary**

Facebook:

facebook.com/HarvestHillsCa…
This group provides tailored help to individuals and families and seniors in need. They are known for their food hampers. None of the food that goes into the hampers is wasted by the families helped.
This is because the family provides a grocery list and then volunteers go shopping and get the items on the list to put into the tailored food hamper.

Researchers have found that happiness supports: a stronger immune system, stronger resilience in the face of stress, a stronger heart and less risk of cardiovascular disease, alongside quicker recovery times when overcoming illness or surgery
Happiness maximises our ability to look after ourselves. Happiness supports more exercise, better socializing, healthy eating, good sleep hygiene.

Wow. I found a donor trying to give >£1m to delivery work in a certain sector. I also found*, and told them, that there's very little evidence about 'what works' in that sector. So they can't reliably fund delivery b/c nobody knows what to deliver. They'd better fund production…
2/ of research about what to deliver (& how). I connected them to some researchers. Now, 3 months later, they're starting a partnership to produce effective #research in that sector.

That entire intervention only took me about 2 hours. Rescued >£1m from almost certain fail.
3/ See: get your philanthro-advice from me: I know my game ;-)

*by using a @3ieNews evidence & gap map. (Which are a public good and hence hard to fund, but useful & consequential.)
